DotPass overview

DotPass is a utility for generating and retrieving passwords using patterns. It lets you enter a graphical pattern and a plain-text seed word and then generates a password based on this unique combination.

As long as you enter the same pattern and seed word the generator will always output the same password. So as long as you remember the pattern you’ve chosen and your seed word, you can get your password back. Unlike other solutions, your passwords are never stored on your device or sent over the 'Net. DotPass is available for both iOS (iPhone/iPad) (available on the App Store) and macOS, so you can get access to your passwords both on your computer and anywhere with your phone/pad.

What’s new in version 1.5.5

  • Added Edit menu item to copy password.
  • Added Edit menu item to copy password without special characters, useful if you encounter a site that doesn't allow special characters in passwords.

The idea behind this app is great. I like it very much. You remember only a visual pattern and a seed word (i.e. a simple password) and then always get your long, hard to remember password (which is not stored anywhere - except in the clipboard). You may use this app for example to generate a master password for your password manager (i.e. Firefox master password). Recent version added more options that increase security. I tested it and it works great. Of course, if we talk about security, one may wish that the output password length can be set in preferences (currently you can pick 9 or 18 chars).
