Tribler is a different BitTorrent client. It gives you:

Tribler is an application that enables its users to find, enjoy, and share content. By content, we mean video, audio, pictures, and much more. Tribler has three goals in helping you, the user:

  • Find content:
    • Keyword search: Through our improved search functionality you search in content of other Tribler users, and in content of big video Web portals such as Youtube and Liveleak.
    • Browse in different categories: You can browse through different categories as video, audio, pictures, etc. You can also see what is most popular and what is made available recently. All these functionalities will definitely help you in finding something you like.
    • See what friends and taste neighbors like: By making friends and getting in touch with users with similar taste you can find content that you might find interesting. You yourself can also show to your friends what you like and what they definitely should see.
  • Consume content: Because of the integrated video and audio player you can almost immediately start watching your favorite video(s) or listen to your favorite song(s).
  • Share content: Tribler is a social application. This means you can make friends with other users and you can show to everyone what you like and dislike. And by sharing your content you also help other Tribler users to enjoy their favorite content.

With the "single point of failure" vulnerabilities inherent in bittorrent (the recent takedown of TPB proved it) Tribler offers some promising technological innovations. But of course what it offers is only as good as people's willingness to use it, and if it's not easy to install and use then it will severely limit the userbase. Here's what happened in my case:

"Tribler has encountered a fatal error, and will now terminate. A Python runtime not could be located. You may need to install a framework build of Python, or edit the PyRuntimeLocations array in this application's info.plist file."

Seriously? I bought a Mac to keep things simple. I realize this is just a university research project, but I hope it develops into something that doesn't require a linux-head to install it.

Looking over the Tribler forums I discovered that "the Windows version has precompiled Tribler binary which doesn't require Python to be installed."

I'd really like to help advance the cause of creating a truly free internet by installing Tribler and using it. The more people who do the better Tribler will perform. But I seriously doubt Tribler will get much support from Mac community in its present iteration.Someone needs to give us a fully compiled version soon.

No option to turn off "Click below to explore what's hot" which wastes your bandwidth showing you what other people are searching for. While looking at this nonsense, I get to have extremely vile, illegal search words come up on my screen. We need to be able to turn this OFF. Also, there many other interface issues that seem half-baked and/or don't work including checking port health, etc. and actual incomplete sentences in the settings, etc. It's amateur hour. Tribler isn't ready for primetime. I'm ditching this and might revisit down the road.

a P2P BitTorrent client that downloads from the developer at only 33 KB/s? This does not bode well.

Should you want to remove Tribler 0.00 from your machine (I'm not being rude that is what it calls itself) may I recommend Cleanapp... Seriously, this isn't a serious program. As you turn it on for the first time, notice how it forces you to save downloads to Desktop. One of those people who just keeps their desktop completely clear and actually locks it because you have your downloads kept somewhere else? Yeah? Well tough. There they must go, otherwise you will endure a python error and a forced exit. But surely there must be some way that once you grant the app this access, avoiding said Python error, surely then you can go in and change the download location to one of your choosing, right? Wrongamundo dudo! To me this just seems like some sort of antediluvian P2P system that was around until everyone started using Napster in the late 1990's - until we see *encryption* and widespread take-up what is the point of this? You too will probably be asking yourself this question, if you can be bothered too. Maybe check back here later to see whether they've actually made this the tool people would actually want.

The dude said: "Seriously, this isn't a serious program." and "...what is the point of this?" Here's a quote from the developers: "Tribler is a not-for-profit research group in which several universities participate. We are fully supported from EU Commission and Dutch national funds. Our aims are to further research, education and progress in peer-to-peer applications, build EU skill capacity in this important area and reach out globally for cooperation and exchange of ideas. As academics we publish our findings so anyone can follow our progress." TL;DR, this is an academic research project that isn't intended to be "serious", in the way that you mean.

Still no change. Still no port randomization option, no encrypted connections, only set networks that expose IP addresses. Want's complete access to the internet along all ports. What a perfect setup for a hacker to tunnel into a machine.

I'm amused that the screenshot shows Tribler quite obviously being used to pirate movies. :) (Might want to take a screenshot of a random free torrent...)

A moderately nice idea, though since it isn't using the encrypted P2P (apparently the public channel online), exposes IP addresses, and uses only a standard port instead of a rotating one... well, even if "legal," it is still going to get banned / blocked by ISPs. We seen this before. Socializing doesn't make up much for its shortcomings where privacy is concerning.
