I would say it's the better VLC. ;-) Slim and fast.

Small, simple and plays lots of formats like APE and FLAC without having to convert them.

It also plays its way through a folder of audio.

Best of all it is NOT iTunes! :)

The number one attraction with MPlayerX is remembering playback position. This is a great feature as is auto-selecting of the next episode.

Beyond that there's a striking list of drawbacks, like these minuses:

- Constant massive audio sync issues on older machines like 2.2ghz Core2Duo, even though VLC play back the same material and even 1080p spotlessly without dropped frames.
- inability to support DVD menus properly. Which ironically makes selecting episodes more or less impossible.
- inability to properly list subtitles according to the correct language code or language name for that matter. Which make it a hard job to select the one you want.

I'm of course happy that MPlayerX is still around and it's certainly the best MPlayer. But I've lost hope any of those minuses will be improved upon.
I only use MplayerX on learning materials and similar of lesser quality that it can play properly and where the playback position is great to have.

MPlayerX is great to have as an alternative, but it's not the bread and butter app for video it could be, if only.

Sorry I might miss some tests when calling some 10.7~ only APIs.

Anyone please send a crash report to me, zongyao.qu [at] gmail.com

It will help me to find out which APIs are called carelessly.

OSX 10.6.8, all updates, MPlayerX 1.0.20

Had 1.0.17 running just fine, update popped up, ran it, restart, application wouldn't launch and gave a -35 error when trying to start up an .m2ts file which played fine immediately before update. Ran a .mkv file through it, which worked, now it plays the same .m2ts fine and seems to have fixed the -35 error. Not sure how to qualify that as the problem resolved itself but maybe something worth investigating for the next update.

Anyone else see audio sync problems with High Quality MP4 videos?
I'm on OS X 10.7.4 using a 2.2ghz merom dual core processor with 6gb of RAM and 128 mb nVidia GeForce 8600M GT. WMV doesn't seem to have this problem, nor do RealMedia.

Sort of an odd situation, but I've discovered that mplayerx doesn't use the standardized method for frame by frame advancement on pause that Quicktime uses (left & right arrows). The right arrow will advance 1 frame at a time per click, but the left arrow will jump the video back back 10 seconds.

Would be nice if the developer could standardize these things in the next build to be consistent with other players (and user expectations).

Latest build, using 10.6.8

I love the app, but twice now at the end of an .avi video, the controls will appear out of nowhere for a couple seconds and disappear again. Very distracting, and, to be honest, a deal breaker, so back to VLC. Anyone know how to keep this from happening?

Any recent mac should have a TOSLINK adapter, which is basically an SPDIF connector. It's a dual purpose connector so it supports analog connectors for things like headphones, but it also has an internal fiber out as well.

Ditch the USB audio if possible. The Mini TOSLINK adapters can be had for $2 or $3 bucks ;)

Just go to preferences and the very first option you see says "Keep window on top" - select the drop down menu and change the setting to never. That should do the trick!

Now it could do:
  • Multi-Screen Fullscreen support.
  • Apple Remote support.
  • Multi-Touch support.
  • Automatic find next proper file to play.
  • Auto detect the encode method of subtitle file (with Universal Charset Detector).
  • Snapshot.
  • Multi-Threaded ffmpeg support.
  • Change subtitle size while playing(except VOBSub)
  • Remember last played time and resume playing.
