Manage your billing cycles and payments.

Overview

You need Chronicle if you pay bills. It gives you the peace of mind of never having to worry about whether you paid a bill again.

Even if you use another finance application for general finance, you need Chronicle. One late payment can wreak havoc on your credit score, leading to higher interest rates and denied loans-- in short, completely affecting your financial life.

That's why you need Chronicle. Chronicle will remind you when your bills are due, even when it isn't running. And in just a few minutes a month, you can handle everything related to paying your bills.

  • Never forget a bill - get reminded when your bills are due with alerts that can be synced to your iPhone and across all your Macs, even when Chronicle isn't running.
  • Easily pay your bills online using Chronicle's integrated browser, or your default browser.
  • Keep proof of all your payments - store confirmation numbers and receipts right in Chronicle, so you always have proof of your payments.
  • Get reminders in your notification center and put bills on your calendar. Chronicle can remind you via notification center on Mountain Lion, and on all Macs, can add your bills to your calendar so you can visually see when they are due.

What's new in Chronicle Pro

Version 9.7.0:
New:
  • Significant improvements to the "More Actions" button on the Overview and Bill Detail screens. The button will now remember your last action for each bill, and you can click the button to perform that action. You can still click the dropdown arrow beside the button to perform additional actions. You can also configure Chronicle to always display a specific action on the button for quick access (such as "Pay Online" or "Log Partial").
  • Fixed an issue where the "Due Soon" amount would incorrectly use the average in calculations, instead of an intelligent estimate, when bills have no amount set.
  • Fixed an issue where the total amount when selecting multiple bills on the overview would fail to take into account the intelligent estimate for the bill.

There are a lot of complaints regarding the switch from the free upgrade policy. We contacted the developer and this is their statement: "[Free upgrades] was the policy for us to provide free updates up until September 2013 (when Chronicle was on version 5), when that kind of [policy] became unsustainable, and we discontinued that policy and removed that statement from our website. Despite discontinuing the [Free upgrades] policy with Chronicle 5, we never charged for an update until version 8. Further, anyone who purchased from us in September 2013 or earlier is still eligible for a free upgrade to the latest version, they just have to contact us to request a license, as we have done for numerous people, and always tell people if they ask." We suggest ignoring the comments regarding the price and contacting the developer to request an upgrade to the latest version.

Using C7, tried C8, and the only difference is Forecast tab with useless feature. And, Yes, in my world it is cheating, promising free updates forever and asking pay again for the really minor update.

Copied from the LittleFin website: "Free Upgrades. Forever. We understand. Part of the excitement of owning software is the updates and new features that are released. That's why LittleFin offers free upgrades for life on all our software. It doesn't matter if we make small changes or massive upgrades. All updates are always free" and: "LittleFin guarantees that you will receive free upgrades, if any, for the lifetime of the product. You will never have to pay for an upgrade. While we constantly strive to update our software, this does not guarantee that there will be any updates after you purchase a license." Seems this developer has gone back on his word. I know software costs money to create, and the developer needs to eat, but he shouldn't make guarantees and promises for "free upgrades for life" if he can't keep them. Very disappointed as this "guarantee" was a big factor in my purchasing decision.

Seems unreasonable that there is no free upgrade path for people that have just purchased the app in the past month or two. I even contacted the developer and was told a flat "no".

Great App, just be careful to remember whether you bought it from the MAS or directly from the developer. I didn't realize I had purchased Chronicle from the MAS because in Purchases I had for some reason hidden it. When I saw an update on MacUpdate within the last week or two, I never considered having purchased it from the MAS. I updated from this site. Today, I went to pay bills and nothing showed. Nothing. Years of history and regular bills set up through the year and longer. I freaked! I should have realized what it meant when I could not find a license code anywhere in my email archives, LicenseKeeper, or 1Password. I went to MAS and it wasn't listed in purchases. I checked under my account settings and showed hidden purchases. There it was from back in 2012. I used AppDelete to archive and then delete the current version (just the App-nothing else) I had installed on Chronicle and then reinstalled from MAS. All my data is back! So please save yourself some anxiety and aggravation and check all of your MAS purchases first.

As for Chronicle, I use Quicken (ugh), but together with Chronicle I can keep up, even ahead, of what is due or coming up. I really couldn't function without it, and recommend it wholeheartedly.

I have had some support help with the developer in the past. He's a one-person operation, but still very responsive to his customers.

Please note: There are TWO versions of Chronicle available, and they aren't exactly the same. There is the downloadable version from the developer's web site, and the App Store version, which includes the ability to sync across devices via iCloud. I made the mistake of overwriting my App Store version with the latest downloadable release and wiped out my entire bill data (reminders, history, etc.). If you need the ability to sync via iCloud, do NOT download the version available here!

Is the App Store the only way to get version 5.2.0? I have a licensed copy of the non-App Store version, and no matter whether I download via the link on this page or via MacUpdate Desktop, the zip file contains version 5.1.0. (To add insult to injury, the file that MUD downloads says it's 5.2.0, even though when you unzip it, it's still just 5.1.0.) If I have the app itself check for updates, it says 5.1.0 is the most current version. If you can get 5.2.0 only from the App Store, and you can't transfer a license from the non-App Store version to the App Store version, this page needs to make that explicitly clear. And shame on the developer for not providing an upgrade path for those of us who prefer to buy our apps directly from developers instead of from the App Store.

I bought this application two months ago via the developer website. Now they release the version 5.2.0 with iCould support. However, you won't be able to get this feature if you don't buy from Mac AppStore.

The Mac AppStore version is currently sell for $9.99. I love the iCould sync feature and I've been waiting for it. Even though I love this application, paying another $9.99 for this feature doesn't make sense to me. I wouldn't buy this application from the developer website if I would know about this. Really disappointed.

I have been using this app for approximately 1 month and I absolutely love it. The program does exactly what it says it will do and I highly recommend it to anyone that loses track of the timing on their bill paying. Keeps me right on schedule. If this program keeps working right I will be using it for a long long time!

I just bought Chronicle. Great application. One thing that bugs me though, the icons look a little bit outdated (old style). Having the possibility to really customise the icons (putting yourself the logo of the credit card or insurance company, for example) would be very useful. Mike, if you're reading this...

Chronicle has changed my life for the better. Cashflow is, increasingly, an unpredictable thing, resulting in fees and/or frantic trips to the bank. Chronicle has changed all that. The interface is completely intuitive. Input obligations and Chronicle tracks them, flags them, waves them at you from the Menu Bar and/or the Dock. You can assign bills to categories/types and indicate how they're paid. Don't want to be bothered by bills that are paid automatically? There's a choice for that. Similarly, inputting income sources is a snap. Once done, your entire flowing economic picture is right there for you, and surprises are a thing of the past. As an added bonus, even bonehead queries to support have been answered virtually instantly - in the middle of a business day. There is nothing not to love about Chronicle and LittleFin. Great product. Great people.

I wasn't even looking for this product, but the moment I found it I knew it's what I've been needing for years. Chronicle is so elegant in its simplicity, yet it gives me the information I need with no wading through (as one apples/oranges example) Quickbooks labyrinthine system. I'm just done with Intuit's klunky software anyway, but to find this useful little gem in a sea of other options was truly a gift.

Leopard incompatibile? This MacUpdate page says version 4.1.2 is OK for Leopard - BUT the Developer's site says it is NOT compatible with Leopard (i.e., Developer's website says "System Requirements: Chronicle requires Mac OS X Snow Leopard or greater, and is Snow Leopard compatible. Leopard Users: Chronicle 3 is available and still supported for those using Leopard.").

A very nice app. My only complaint about it is that you have to enter a sum total for your income, which in my case is multi-faceted and changing each month as I am not on a regular salary at the moment. It would be nice if you could add income in a piecemeal fashion with notes to indicate what each component is. I envisage a drop down sheet similar in structure to Apple's find dialogues. You have a field to enter the value, a field to say where it comes from (e.g. salary, freelancing, gift, interest, one-off payment, etc.) and plus/minus buttons to add or remove more rows. Then the app sums the total for you. Some record of your income per month would then be needed (e.g. a graph showing income versus outgoings over the course of the year). Perhaps, as well as bills, it could also be used to track non-recurring costs as well.

We just bought Chronicle via Mac Apps for our iMac, I believe ours is the 3.5.0 version. Besides the addition of Compartments are there any differences between the two versions (3.5.0 and 3.50(2 or 3?) in the way of options, extras or settings? My boyfriend and I would both like to use this app separately but we can't find anything that seem to relate to creating another "account". We both have our finances separate so this app so far is only being used by me. I think I am regretting making my purchase via Apple. I had no idea there was a bigger and better version from Little Fin... Thanks! M~

This is a great, simple little app that does exactly what it says it does, and very efficiently. I've been doing us via a boring old spreadsheet, and I'd much rather use it's nice GUI. Plus, handy reminder alerts, quick links to pay online, an overview page that calculates what you owe and what's due soon (or overdue!), a place to attach receipts/confirmations, and a payment history log. It's everything I need in one place. I just wish it had an editable note area in the Overview so I could add a handy link to check my bank statement (to make sure I have enough $$$ first). The developers seem so responsive to requests, I'm sure it won't long before they that add that feature!

Thank you for the currency update! I also like that Chronicle is kept simple compared to Money, iDollar and others. One irk I noticed though... I find the due time to be somewhat off on occasion. What is in reality a due date of 3 weeks and 2 days somehow gets rounded off to 4 whole weeks. Since I don't have 4 weeks in reality that could potentially end up with that bill getting paid rather late. Here is at least my vote for having it err on the safe side and display 3 weeks as I rather have mine paid a day or two 'too soon' rather than 'too late'.

Can't say enough good things about Little Fin and their products! I've really grown to depend on this clean and functional (dare I say "fun"?) little app to help me avoid late fees. The developer is very active and responsive to users, and maintains a democratic bug/feature/wishlist message board via UserVoice ( http://littlefin.uservoice.com/forums/32658-chronicle-ideas ). All this plus "Free Upgrades for Life" makes this purchase a MUST if you're looking for a good way to manage your bills! My positive experiences with Chronicle have led me to also purchase their younger, but similarly good app, Compartments (for maintaining home-inventory records).

Great little app! Really helps me to stay on top of my bills. Very much appreciate automatic iCal additions. One request though... I would like to have more flexibility for repeat bills. For example, I have a bill that i pay on the 1st and 15th of each month. Would like to have the ability to set that up, instead of setting 2 recurring bills (one for the 1st and one for 15th)

Was skeptical at first, but once I downloaded it and tried it for a few days, I purchased a license. I use BusyCal, and a minor annoyance is Chronicle does open iCal when you save a bill, but it instantly updates in BusyCal so it's really more of an annoyance than a problem. Now I get alarm notifications on my mac via BusyCal but also on my iPhone when a bill is due. Like the poster below, I also have most of my bills via e-bills and no longer receive paper bills. This program is a huge help in maintaining my organization of all bills and then reminding me when they are due. Highly recommended!

Within the last 12 months, I have cut down my paper-bill pile from about 20/month to 4/month. As a side effect to this "greening" of my mailbox, I was having a difficult time managing not only the newly converted automatic payments (vs. the available balance in my checking account), but also the paperless manual payments as well. Thats when I went searching for a solution, and found Chronicle (v2, at that time). This tool has simply been amazing, as it manages the bill-payment reminders for me in a smart and intuitive way. It is fast loading, so checking my bills daily is not a chore. And the interface is attractive. To top it all off, the developer listens to all suggested feature requests, and truly supports their users! Simply, if you are looking for the best way to manage your bills and log your payments, Chronicle will not disappoint.

I can't say enough good things about Chronicle2. Not only can you pay bills and have it remind you but there is a function that allows you to pay off loans/debts etc. When I wrote to the developer he was very quick to reply and incredibly patient when I requested features that were already there that I hadn't seen. Highly recommended.

These days I want to be extra careful about paying bills on time. I can use iCal to set reminders, but Chronicle goes the extra mile (and beyond) by providing a place that lists all of your bills, their due dates, the average payment amount, and when the last payment was made. It has a very pleasing interface, Adding a bill is easy, as is editing one already added. When a paid bill is logged, iCal is automatically updated to show and alert when the next month's (or whatever increment) bill is due. A text box is provided for the creditor's web site, and a function is available to click to go to that site to pay. The developer is responsive and promises free updates to even major new releases. I feel more secure and at ease owning this software.

I've used Chronicle 2 for a couple of months now and have found that this is the perfect solution to something my bank doesn't offer. Automatic reminders to bills. With all the online billing taking place now and the email reminders, I tend to forget if I have submitted my payment. Chronicle 2 offers an easy UI to look at your bills, their due dates and the typical amount owed. The price is right on for the feature set offered.
