Have been using about a year with paid subscription and had a lot of trouble with older version until they upgraded it for mac 4 months ago. now it works better but recently my Firefox browser started crashing during closing so I ran it in safe mode and that fixed it but when I started HotSpot Shield and turned it off before closing Firefox the problem came right back so It's HotSpot that's causing that's preventing Firefox from closing! Hotspot's tech help is atrocious so don't even bother to email them they want you to do all the work before they'll lift a finger to help. Something I hate about them is they attempt to censor/block webpages that they deem dangerous or phishing & that's nice for newbies and kids but I don't want a net nanny with a vpn service and there's no way to turn that service off! Bottom line Hotspot Shield is only good for newbies who don't know what they're doing or windows users. Otherwise It's an unstable mess that should be avoided at all costs.

Though Hotspot Shield works at many public wi-fi hotspots, it unfortunately is useless on almost all pubic libraries' wi-fi because those places block the ports which Hotspot Shield uses.

As I'm living in China and Also in Middle east countiries,I'm a specialist in finding new ways to access blocked websites. I have tried all those softwares, hotspot shieled, vpn one click, tor,....
They are good but not good enough, I think you'd better use a paid vpn service, But before you pay for it, ask them to give you a free trial account at least for 1 day.and then you can decide which one is better provider.I compared many providers. Strong vpn, hide my ass, purevpn and saturnvpn. They are all offering almost the same service, but saturnvpn is really cheap, and the support is really patient and helpful. You know 1month for $3.3 is not too much. you can also but an account for 12 months for $16 and 6MOnths for $10
satunvpn.com has free test account and you can try that, You can also ask them to give you a free trial account for 1 or 3 days.
I hope it could help you to get rid of all those restrictions.

Thank you for your review recommendation. I'm going to China for a 2 months trip. If you read this and won't mind me ask, did you test the saturnvpn trial account from inside China?

My advice is to stay away. I paid for the subscription service on this and found it slowed down my browsing experience quite a bit. Also for some reason or another the ads, which were supposed to be blocked with the subscription would suddenly appear every now and then.
But the clincher is trying to cancel a subscription, the information they provide via support is completely inaccurate and so it becomes a complete pain to cancel. Esellerate as well, say more.
I recently purchased NetShade which is far superior in my opinion.

Downloads v2.9. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on 2 different MacBook Pro laptops. On both laptops, after I installed this software, the Sleep function no longer works, or it takes 2-3 attempts to get the computer to go to sleep mode. I have to disconnect HSE and then turn off AirPort, and even then it still takes 2-3 attempts for the computer to sleep.

Also, for a paid app, upon restart, it continually opens my Browser web page to their home page (though my browser is set to open to "none").

It takes longer to send email using this VPN service, and web pages take longer to load.

I don't know if I will renew my paid subscription in a year. Right now I am weighing the pros of this program versus how much it is slowing down my computers.

Update: After it wreaked havoc on my iTunes Radio selections (it prevented many stations from playing because of the stations' IP address), I have uninstalled this from my laptops. Very disappointed in this version. I should have spent more time with the 7-day free trial instead.

I use Hotspot Shield for a couple of purposes that are not mentioned by the other commentators. The search engines, and some advertisers create a bubble especially for me. Every time I use HS Shield I pop up at a new ISP somewhere in the USA... so I seem to be able to have a generic browse (outside my bubble). It is useful to see how well my web sites are doing with the engines.

Since I live outside the USA, services like Pandora now (and for a long time now) refuse to stream music to my account with them. For years Pandora has promised to negotiate with the music companies here. With HS Shield I seem to them to be in the USA and Pandora works.

I have bought the Hotspot Shield. I can install and run the software in my iMac, my iPad. However, when I try to activate my Hotspot Shield on my iPhone4S, it just say (Your code was already used. Please try another code.),and I could not restore the purchase.
It was said that this version includes support for 5 Macs and 5 iOS devices, what is the reason that I could not activate my iPhone using the same Key you provided?

In short:

+ Cheap
+ Easy to use

- No options (at all)
- on iOS it stop transferring data (reconnect solves it)
- Some servers have been "blocked" at different sites (due to spam)
- P2P (torrents)seem not to work (skype and such does work)

Conclusion: I like it.

on iOS (my ipad and iphone) it stops transferring data after almost exactly 50 minutes. Annoying but not a big deal.. I have tried some other of their VPN profiles (servers) still the same resault.
When i use VPN from other companies it does not disconnect at all.

Hi,
Hotspot Shield is free of charge, and that's why it is with ads. But the software is working well and thanks to encrypted connection secures you on public WiFi's. It also allows you to access a content limited to US visitors only while you are outside the US - for instance pandora.com, hulu.com or netflix.

If you are upset with the advertising, you can pay for Elite version ($29.99/year), which is without ads.
