Secure core - Regular VPN services can be compromised if their servers are under surveillance. ProtonVPN prevents this by first passing user traffic through our Secure Core network in privacy-friendly countries like Switzerland and Iceland. Thus, even a compromised VPN endpoint server will not reveal your true IP address.
Perfect forward secrecy - ProtonVPN exclusively uses ciphers with Perfect Forward Secrecy, meaning that your encrypted traffic cannot be captured and decrypted later, even if an encryption key gets compromised in the future.

They have a free plan, which is a good thing, but this app made ALL (!) my browsers crash regularly, even with the app not running. So, I had to uninstall this app, which was a bit of a pain, because some system extensions remained and had to be uninstalled manually and by having to disable the SIP (!). I'm on Mac 10.15.7.

v4.0.1 is out: "Contains several UI improvements and language fixes." I use it all day, every day. There are occasions when a website freaks that I'm using a VPN. Tough on them! And occasionally an exit node onto the Internet will appear to lock up, which typically means a site is either blocking that node or it's under DDOS attack (distributed denial of service). So I switch to a different exit node. - - SUGGESTION: If you're in the USA and not exiting into any specific country for a special purpose, stick to your home country for exit. That way the government surveillance geeks can't 'legally' spy on your Internet behavior. See Constitutional Amendments 4 and 5. Other countries may have similar laws. Hopefully, the unconstitutional part of FISA section 702 will be obliterated in the near future.

It's out of beta but further features are still being developed. There are THREE tiers. Regularly 60€ yearly) adds: • Unlimited hide-my-email aliases • Integrated 2FA (two-factor authentication) • Organize items with multiple vaults • Autofill credit cards (under development). - - The premium tier, Proton Unlimited, provides full access to all FIVE Proton app services (Currently promoted at 120€ per year ! Regularly 156€ per year). The current Proton app services are Proton Pass, VPN, Mail, Drive and Calendar. -->Hopefully, MU will add the further four to the website so we can review and rate them individually. Me? I'm obviously a fanboi Proton Unlimited user, consistently impressed with everything they create and provide, which is the only reason I write this stuff about them. (Good riddance 1Password).

OIC: Proton messed up the download file name. [COVID.... Bleh] It's their fault. "3.0.18" is actually v3.1.2. It's version is correctly set inside the application but NOT on the download file. I'll attempt to wake them up and let them know the blunder.

Inexplicably, what's downloading is v3.0.18, rather than v3.1.2 the actual current version. So! (1) If you have already been using ProtonVPN, use its own updater to update to v3.1.2. (2) If you are NEW to ProtonVPN (which I praise) then do the v3.0.18 free download, THEN use the app's own updater to update to v3.1.2. [COVID.... Bleh]
