Subscription-based private Internet browsing.

Overview

TunnelBear is a subscription-based virtual private network (VPN) service and companion app, enabling you to browse the internet privately and securely.

Features
  • Browse privately - Secure your data and hide your IP address behind a bear.
  • Experience the Internet as if you’re in another country - A TunnelBear can "tunnel" you around censorship and blocked sites to another country of your choosing.
  • Zap creepy trackers - Block the website trackers (ads, analytics, scripts, social buttons) that track everything you and your family do online.
  • A TunnelBear is really, really simple - On. Off. On. Off. You get the idea.
  • TunnelBear comes in three subscription tiers:
    • Little: 500 MB per month; free
    • Giant: unlimited; $9.99/month
    • Grizzly: unlimited; $49.99/year

See the pricing page for full details.

What's new in TunnelBear

Version 3.9.7:
  • You might not know this, but Bears are natural housekeepers. They love a tidy cave just like the rest of us. For this release, they did a great job sweeping out old leaves, chasing away annoying bugs and they still had time for a good brushing. No bears were added with this release. Maybe next time.

To the developer of Tunnel Bear, I am asking for a refund of the year's subscription I purchased a week ago. I tested it under the free 500MB trial after 2 years using BTGuard. TB was perfectly stable then. I was impressed by the simplicity of the interface, appreciated the wit, and was pleased by the wide selection of servers in many countries. Once I had a paid subscription, TB first refused to download bit torrents until I discovered this could be overcome by activating the TCP override option. Then I started having infuriating problems with connection stability, disconnecting and reconnecting on average every five minutes and showing notices that it was having trouble creating secure tunnels. Un-clicking TCP override or changing other of the minimal options had no effect on this problem. If TB worked, it would be one of the best utilities of its kind, but as it is unusable (for me), I can only give it a half-star for effortless installation. If it doesn't work, it is more than useless, it is an annoyance and best and perilous at worst! A pity I now have to uninstall it and may lose the money I paid for the subscription!

TunnelBear functionality and integration is amazing and flawless. They have a companion iOS app that will use your same account (no extra charges!) and VPN with your mobile device. The whole experience is smooth, and "it just works" just like Mac software always used to. Support? AMAZING! Super great people handle your email support, and are very helpful. If you need VPN, go for TunnelBear. The rest don't compare.

Does anybody know if I'd be able to use the paid version of TunnelBear in China?

Sorry for such a late reply, probably useful to others — the answer is NO. I would love to have bears in my VPN and bought a subscription to test it, but Tunnelbear is effectively blocked in China. The best VPN I found was 12VPN, from Hong Kong with excellent support for using in China...

Thanks Nontroppo, it's in plenty of time before my NEXT trip!. China is crazy about blocking stuff. It makes it hard to keep up.

Well, I am even later. I read a while ago about "AlwaysHome Duo Private Public Travel VPN Alternative" which is being sold over Amazon. I did not try out, but it seems to be a good solution, hardware and software based. Perhaps not the cheapest.

I just.returned from China. ExpressVPN worked like a charm on my iPhone and PC laptop (Mac is a desktop at home). Slower WiFi limited my connections, but when the WiFi was good, even Youtube videos played fine. Of note: T-Mobile gives FREE 2G (very slow) connectivity in China, enough to get email and iMessage while away from WiFi - with NO censoring at all. Great value for those traveling behind the Great Firewall.

I have given two genuine email addresses on set up but sadly I haven't received a confirmation to either reply, so I'm unsure whether if it is protecting my machine.

Easy to use and nice looking application. This bear is awesome. It really does what it is developed for. Many countries available on the list. User friendly interface. You even have the option of trial version with 500 or 700 mgb of encrypted traffic. Websites are loaded pretty fast.
