MacSOUP is an offline reader for Usenet newsgroups and Internet email. MacSOUP is primarily a newsreader, its email capabilities are somewhat rudimentary compared to most standard email clients.
What's New
Version 2.8.4:
  • Compatible with OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). However, no support for Classic Mac OS any more.
  • MacSOUP will notice when Daylight Savings Time begins or ends while it is running (at last).
  • Don't break lines in the middle of a word (if the word is longer than the allowed line length). This was especially annoying for long URLs.
  • Added an alternate key for the function of the Enter key in the Subject window and Message window: on US keyboard layouts it's the key above the Return key ('' on a US keyboard), on ISO keyboards the one to the left of the Return key ('#' on a German keyboard). This is useful because today's Mac keyboards don't have an Enter key any more, but Enter is an important key in MacSOUP, especially in the Subject window; and having to press fn-Return is inconvenient if your left hand holds the coffee mug.
  • In addition to the keys on the numeric keypad, which let you navigate the thread tree in all directions, you can now use the arrow keys while holding down Shift to navigate at least horizontally and vertically. Note that Left-arrow (go to parent article) is different from Shift-Left-Arrow (go the next article that comes directly to the left in the thread tree, no matter how it is related to the current article). Likewise for Right-Arrow.
  • No longer warn when outgoing messages contain non-Latin-1 characters.
Version 2.8.4:

  • MacSOUP will notice when Daylight Savings Time begins or ends while it is running (at last).

  • Added an alternate key more...

I tried it out and I m a Usenet Fan and I don't like it.It has a terrible interface and to say it is great is really an error on the user's part. It is sad that the choices on Mavericks are so few. Hogwasher refuses to update,MtNewswatcher can no longer be launched in Mavericks and Thoth is still a good choice. But this one is a maze of convolutions that only spell trouble.

The best newsreader in the universe got the first update after two years. MacSOUP is still the best choice for reading, collecting and following news articles on a Mac. Even under Windows I found nothing close.

Bought this year's ago under the Mac OS (pre-X). The selling point is the handling of message threads (excellent visual representation) and the ability to read off-line. I also like the way that you can reformat messages easily (command-R).

Under OS X, it's looking a bit dated to me, both in appearance and function. It's ready for a revamp. But still solid under OS X 10.4.5.

Sorry, but I think this one of the most terrible apps I used on osx until now:

1. It's not intuitive at al. And so are the menu-entries. Why do I have to do so many different steps in so many different menu-entries? Why not everything in one go? Choose the newsserver, get groups, subscribe alltogether?

2. The user-interface is so ugly.

3. It doesn't work exactly as described in the manual. After I managed to get the news I could'nt open them. They were in the list, but I were not able to read them (besides, what's this crap with "enter" / "space"? If I wanted to be bound to keys I could've been using the terminal...

I agree, the interface is terrible and it doesn't work as described in the manual. The whole think is not worth anything. Unison and Thoth are a better choice.
