I received Blast as part of a Macupdate Promo bundle. I really really want to like it; especially with Lion's own shortcomings in the "Smart Folder" department.

In fact, I want to like it so much (because in theory it's eminently useful) that I keep trying it.

Here is my one and only qualm with it at this point (and why I can never use it more than a few minutes before remembering this issue):

I need to be able to specify filetypes explicitly. I use video for my work that ends with mts and mxf and mp4... Blast doesn't like these formats.

I use audio like AIFF, WAV, etc... these don't seem to get picked up either though, in my mind they are standard audio formats.

A very quick menu to allow us to assign file-types... and this would be, well, the bomb. ;)

I can no longer open the application. Any ideas on why that is? I double click on the program and I get nothing.

I really wish I could find this more useful. However, I'm a professional photographer and I use a pretty involved backup scheme (a combination of SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner, along with limited Time Machine), and this seems to create issues with file/folder exclusions in Blast.

Specifically, no matter how many times I exclude certain types of files or specific folders, my backups keep producing "new" or "modified" files that keep popping up in Blast, so I spend more time right-clicking to exclude things than getting to the files I want.

Also, there seems to be a bug when right-clicking on items in the list, as after removing a file/folder/file type, the next right-click will still bring up information related to the item I just excluded. For example, if I right-click on folder "Backups" and exclude it, then right click on the item that has moved into "Backups" position in the list, the context menu will offer to exclude "Backups" rather than the current item.

Still, a good idea with potential, and it probably works very well for people with less convoluted disk and backup setups than I have.

I'm working with loads if files, opening and closing them a lot. I need recent apps, recent files...
Well, I needed Blast.
And you know what? It's great. Does exactly what it promises.
Bugs? Actually there was one, but it was caused by a discrepancy in usernames. However, Apparent Software was very helpful, and althoug I managed to get rid of the issue they had identified, they sent me a version that circumvened it.
Great support, great app. Saves me many time, for less than 10 bucks.

I have been happy with how this program has been progressing but I can't get one thing ot work. How can I open several files at the same time? The developer said you could do this my command clicking the files but when I double click on the file it only opens that one file I have double clicked on.

To open multiple files, select them and press the Enter Key.
Cmd-Click is to show in the Finder (the same as Cmd-Enter).

I'm currently using Blast 1.7.1 on a 13" MBP running Snow Leopard.

Pros:
- Good goal for the app
- Quick access to recent folders and files

Cons:
- Drag-and-drop doesn't work like it should because the Blast window disappears as soon as I click-and-hold an item to drag from within the menu app
- Another menu icon to clutter up the menu bar
- No Little Snitch-like "Stay Visible" check box to keep window open to drag-and-drop items into the sidebar

My Suggestions:
- Fix drag-and-drop so I can add from anywhere, not just within the app
- Add option to not display menu icon because I prefer shortcuts for apps that run in the background, like Alfred, Clips, Tags, etc.
- Make it more app-like and not a drop-down UI so I can interact with it more.
- Allow app to stay visible until I click outside the app or hit esc - which could make it hard to drag-and-drop folders and files from finder into Blast.

I think Blast still has a lot of room to grow, so I'll stick with Fresh. If it incorporates my suggestions then I can't see another app topping it, even Fresh.

Hello Tayker.

We've fixed the drag-n-drop issue in 1.7.2.
Option to stay visible IS available in the Preferences.
Also, in 1.7.2 you can now drag from Finder to Blast's icon in the menu to open the window and then drag to sidebar.

Thank you for the reply, drag-n-drop does now work. Sorry for missing the "stay visible" option.

1. Is there a way to set Blast menu to remain open when I drag-n-drop from Finder without having to uncheck the "Automatically hide the main window" option? Like when it detects the release from a mouse click?

2. Will there be an option to hide the Menu icon?

3. In an upcoming update or v.2 will the UI be different? Like Fresh meets Default Folder X?

Apparent Software (developer) replied on 03 Jun 2011
1. No, since release from a mouse click is not much different from other actions you can do with mouse in Blast. Again, you can now drag to Blast's icon to open the window. Do you really alter your sidebar content that often that this becomes an issue?

2. Not in Blast 1 since it's so built around appearing near the menu. In Blast 2 we'll make appearance and behavior more flexible.

3. Yes, the UI will be different as we'll need to support some other features. At the same time, the basic idea will be the same.

I'm not sure what you mean Fresh meets DFX. Fresh is indeed a competitor with a different UI approach. On the other hand, DFX does different stuff, especially as related to Open/Save dialogs.
Could you elaborate on this?

Yes. Let me explain where I think Blast is better than Fresh: folder navigation - I dislike having to drag stuff to The Cooler and then to a folder. However, Blast's implementation is still clunky enough that I don't mind using The Cooler in Fresh. DFX I mentioned not as a competitor but as an example app that has a robust folder navigation system. I know that's the point of DFX, but having to use DFX in an app with a folder/file navigation system built in doesn't make sense to me either.

A 5-star idea with a 3-star implementation.

Too cumbersome to add items to the exclude list:
- Memorize the file/directory path and type it in, hoping you don't make a mistake while tapping it all into the exclusion list.
----- OR ------
- go to Finder/PathFinder
- right-click to "copy path"
- back to Blast exclusion list to "paste"
- if it's a directory, learn the hard way to include a trailing slash
That gets old fast when you find yourself doing it multiple times per day.

There is also no way to make the fonts in the listing smaller if desired.

In short, I'd expect this sort of consistent irritation with a Win app. It would be much more Mac-like if a simple checkbox appeared before each logged item, allowing one to easily eliminate items which would then immediately disappear from view. Ditto the ability to dictate font size.

I thank the dev for making a trial available which, regrettably, has now been uninstalled. I'll check back later to see if a more sophisticated version appears via update.

In fact, there's an easier way to add excludes.
Just right-click (or cmd-click) on the items and you'll see context menu with various options, including excluding files, folders or by extension.

I like the premise behind Blast but, just testing it this morning, I don't think it will work for me.

I use BackBlaze to do off-site backups. It runs continuously in the background encrypting & uploading files to their network.

Looking at Blast I can see every file that's been backed up (and there are quite a lot) mixed in with the files I have, myself, used.

If there were some way of excluding files touched by certain processes I think this could be a useful app but, for me, as it is, I think I'll have to pass.

Thanks for getting this to my attention.
Yet, by chance, I use BackBlaze for my backups myself and I don't have this issue on my development machine.
Could you get in contact with me through our support page at http://www.apparentsoft.com/support so that we could work it out with you.
