This Software has still the same problem right from v1: The Sound output is dreadful. Its thin. Whatever fx's, tricks and add-ons are been used for finishing master tune, ones your bounce down the track in Reason, the result is always notable - Thin. One way to push that to an better sound is the ReWire option with an DAW, like Logic, Live or even GarageBand. It is CPU and RAM demanding. Reason is an "cheap" gadget for "so to be musician" , so the illusion is build in. A great tool to learn, BUT stay away for any serious production with it. Pointless overpriced software.

I'm curious about your dislike of Reason. Todd Rundgren says that's what he's used on his last 3 or so albums, recording on his LapTop.

Please explain. Thanx!

thats why you run it as a rewire app.
most DAWS will host reason and from trial and error I've found that I get the best results recording my acoustic drums thru reason's virtual desk with their "can't be beat compression". even if you're doing straight electronic stuff, running it as a rewire thru pro tools or logic will make those DAWs like post-production maximizers … watch your initial levels, tho (lol)

I know this is a 3 year old review, but I GOTTA throw this in here:
If you think there's something wrong with Reason's sound output, you don't know what the F*** you're doing. You've never, ever worked with real analog synths in a studio consisting of solely analog gear.

Their output is often mono, and – by God – you don't just get a huge mofo sound out of those synths if you just run them through the mixer dry like an overcooked crumble pie.

Get real and improve your skills man.

I've been using Reason since 2003 and it's my favorite music creation tool of choice. New SDK for Rack Extensions released today and it's awesome. I have Logic, have used Reaper, and was a big Cubase fan long ago, but I've make music faster and easier in Reason. It won Computer Music's 2013 Music Software of the Year.

Well, when Roburt wrote that, in 2013, it was v7. Now, a year later, it's v8.

I'm trying to decide if I want to spring for the upgrade.

This is one of the strongest and most versatile applications I've ever used for creating music. I have yet to have one bomb after five years of usage and that is a rare thing for any software. There is so much depth in terms of the tools offered that I have been able to use this for everything from orchestral MRs to incidental music for stage musicals. This version only increases its usefulness and I am still trying to learn all of the newest additions to this software. The only complaint I would ever have is that this software has been expanded so much that it is almost a two-person job to use it to its fullest capability.

In the past I used both Ableton Live and Reason. But from 6.0 and most certainly with 6.5, the Propellorheads are after peoples money by offering additional synths and fxs. I always thought the power behind Reason is buy-one-package-doing-it-all. That is why it stood out against all other DAWs. OK, the default package contains a lot of synths and fxs but I wouldnt be suprised the new strategy of Propellorheads is changing towards paying add-ons. Not good.

You can buy third-party add-ons or sample content, if you want. There is nothing perfidious in doing that. Your supposition is unjustified and is speculation only.

Actual release notes for 6.5.2 (I edited out the Windows-specific changes) - Fixed Combi patch backwards compatibility that was broken in 6.5.0 and 6.5.1. - Default browse locations now work as in Reason 6.0.2. - Rack Extensions now respond to sample rate changes in the ReWire host. - Dropped support for 22,050 Hz sample rate on playback and export. - Fixed crash bug when exporting song containing a placeholder device. - Stopping playback now cuts hanging notes in Rack Extension devices. - Fixed a bug that caused audio glitches in Neptune’s Live Mode. - Fixed resource/memory leak when browsing in locations with lots of items. - Fixed a bug in NN-XT when doing Set Root Notes From Pitch Detection. - Fixed a bug where bounced samples defaulted to 0% Loop. - Authorizer will no longer request downloading of license data when it’s not necessary. - Fixed some ReWire bugs. - Fixed a bug where the Master Section’s Insert FX would be moved when moving a connected device to another position in the rack. - Fixed some name label bugs in template songs. - Minor bug fixes.

Doesn't show up as an available update when I use Reason 6.0.2 to check for updates. Is it a paid upgrade?

I finally bought it! I uses almost every demo of every point release. And always I returned to my beloved Live (Ableton). And I still use Live as my main sequencer/daw. But v6 is very impressive and I now use it to sketch ideas on my Macbook Pro. The 'blocks' feature is really inspiring to use and makes pattern based music a joy. Live is still the best but Reason6 is very good too.

Finally the sequence part has a separate window. Still a worthy daw with some great synths and effects. Perfect for laptop musicians. But for me Live is the best of them all. ;)
