Renoise

3.1.0
10 October 2015

Audio editor/sequencer.

Overview

Renoise is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that lets you record, compose, edit, process and render production-quality audio using a tracker-based approach. In a tracker, the music runs from top to bottom in an easily understood grid known as a pattern. Several patterns arranged in a certain order make up a song. Step-editing in a pattern grid lends itself well to a fast and immediate workflow. On top of this, Renoise features a wide range of modern features: dozens of built-in audio processors, alongside support for all commonly used virtual instrument and effect plug-in formats. And the software can be extended too: with scripting, you can use all of your MIDI or OSC controller to control it in exactly the way you want.

What's new in Renoise

Version 3.1.0:
  • Improvements to the sound engine
  • Refinements to phrases
  • Presets everywhere. And now, libraries too.
  • Support for VST and AU MIDI generators (Arpeggiators)
  • Other workflow refinements
  • General performance tweaks

With a pedigree going back to the days of the Amiga, this music composition tool is by far my favorite piece of software on the Mac. I

Other then a nice flashback to the old trackers for the Amiga (who remembers OctaMED, FastTracker, .. ?) it cannot compete with a modern DAWs like Ableton Live, Cubase, .. .. The cluttered GUI just does not invite you to be creative imo But again, it is a great flashback. :)

An outstanding piece of software in almost every way. Firstly, it looks fantastic with a well thought through crisp UI design. It's probably the best looking DAW on the market - maybe even nicer than Logic. Secondly, it's just so much fun and incredibly easy to use while being as deep as you need it to be. I have to give special praise to the guy who does the official tutorial videos - he just gets straight to the point with no fluff what-so-ever. I had it all figured out in one watch. Love it!

It's a tracker, not really a DAW. If you are working with loops and other sound films you didn't record I guess it's fine. But for actually recording music it's more confusing in its layout than Logic, Cubase or ProTools. Or even Garageband.

I used to use Impulse Tracker back in the day. You can't imagine how overjoyed I was to find Renoise for my MAC. Loads of fun and the price is right!

Renoise is great. It has a lot of power and speed. Definately my favorite music-creation studio. If you aren't familiar with trackers, then it may take a while to learn. So download lots of XM-music files and learn. There are literally thousands of XMs out there.
