Version 10.9.14

Firewall and identity-protection software.

NetBarrier X9 overview

NetBarrier X9 is a professional-grade firewall and identity-protection application.

  • Active application list easily identifies applications using bandwidth as well as incoming vs. outgoing bandwidth for each application
  • Logical default profiles for the different kinds of networks you connect to (home, public, and work)
  • Automatic profile switching detects when the network connection changes and makes it easy to select a new profile
  • Easily blocks/allows connections for specific local devices
  • Easily configures primary network channels to/from the Internet and to/from the local network
  • Full-time application activity monitoring for anti-spyware measures
  • Helps identify rogue applications accessing the Internet to act as zombies, expose your confidential information, or act as backdoors into your computer
  • Automatic application activity notification whenever an application is trying to do something on the network (take simple actions to allow or deny the application to run or to interact with specific domains or local devices)

Note: Price shown here is for Net Barrier and Virus Barrier together in the Internet Security X9 bundle.

I have used it for many years, but I recently tried Bitdefender and it does not slow the system as did the Antivirus suite did from Intego. Also, it did not catch all the trojans in email that Bitdefender did.

Excellent product. Uninstalled because my subscription was up and I had decided to go with the Bitdefender Box 2 to cover all of my online devices instead.

Detailed malware detection test results are regularly posted here for nearly 2 dozen products, free and paid: http://securityspread.com/detection-rate-results/ These are very detailed, showing EXACTLY by name for each malware/virus if it is detected or not, for each product, then products are ranked 95%, 85%, 75% etc based on detection rates. Historical results are maintained so you can compare over time, and you do see product results change with each test (done every month to every 3 months depending on whether there are any new reported malware in the field, and a sample can be obtained for testing). I've done a bit of research on the site and tester, to make sure it was not one of those 'sponsored' sites by a vendor that are made to appear as objective, neutral reviews. The fact that the product rankings change constantly AND that the results are very specific and listed in detail, further support that this site and the tester are very objective. In fact this is exactly the kind of site and test results, that vendors DON'T want you to see, even the ones that do well on the test (because no product is 100%). I am posting this to support the Mac Community. When we are all better informed when it comes to this important area of security in this day of cyber threats, we all benefit. Education and information is the best defense, (as with so many things in life). For example, if someone uses MacKeeper because they don't know better, then in some ways the community failed for not getting the word out. If after doing some research and being advised not to use MacKeeper, someone still chooses to do so, then you can't help that, but hopefully it wasn't because there wasn't information available. My aim is not to support or dissuade anyone about a particular product, you pick / use or don't use whatever product you want, and live with the consequences, just remember that your decision can effect others, by virtue of whether you are part of stopping the spread, or being a part of it. I highly recommend you don't just look at the current results, but look at the past ones as well. You WILL see trends, with some products consistently doing well and others not so much, and some moving up and down. Remember, an A/V product rests on two main things, the scanning engine AND the malware database. A great engine can be crippled if the database is not updated in a timely manner. Conversely, a vendor that does maintain a current database might still not be effective if the program itself is buggy. This site only ONLY addresses virus detection results, it does not in general make any conclusions or post results regarding performance, installation, support, UI, etc.

Don't know whether this new version is compatible with Yosemite Developer Prevew 8 or not. in the case of Mavericks, Intego software cause Mavericks to crash and have all sort of problem until X8 releases in the second quarter of 2014, ling after Mavericks official release. This might happen again with Yosemite. No beta release so far. Other software vendor release beta for testing but not Intego. Have tried to email them on Yosemipte compatibility. The answer is do not upgrade to Yosemite developer preview and have to wait long after official OSX release Come on Intego, be more flexible and faster response to Apple release of OSX. Tell me whether this new version is compatible with Yosemite developer preview 8 or not

It is simple, easy to use, and you do not need to be an Uber-Geek to understand whats going on. Other firewalls tend to be a bit confusing for the non-expert, who does not wish to spend time with firewall issues, other than be safe. The price may be shocking, but it is for 5 licenses bundled. This way they try to push users to buy their internet security bundle including anti-virus. The Intego anti-virus has failed me so miserably, I can't consider buying that ever again. But NetBarrier is good for me. Only 3.5 stars, because the standalone app does not live in the task/menu-bar, only the bundled app does, which IMHO is not OK.

One of my absolutely favorite tools gone down the tubes. Intego 2013 editions are essentially VirusBarrier 6x given a feature frontal lobotomy and a graphical interface that looks like they gave the app too much Benzodiazepine (dazed and confused with drool going). The latest incarnation named after last year (seriously, even Microsoft stopped using dates in their product names) gives us roughly 1/4 of the features of VirusBarrier x6. Gone are the features that let us figure out who exactly was attempting access, what kind of traffic is currently occurring on the network and no ability to block key data items for detection of apps trying to extract your info. Want to block the Chinese hackers network address range? Sorry... Worse the pablum interface shows almost no diagnostic information in it's drug induced arrangement and animation. The goofy graphics are very indicative of how seriously you can take this software. Point blank, this thing is horrible, make the bad man stop. I will continue to run VirusBarrier 6X until it is no longer supported on the OS and then switch to something with an interface built for computers (vs some print layout) and functional robustness. At this point I resent paying for VirusBarrier x6 because I know that the money goes into it's half-wit brother's pocket (VirusBarrier 2013) Somewhere in the distance I hear the sounds of "Taps" playing and a flag being unfurled. A medal of valor being presented to the widow of Netbarrier... Good bye old friend, you will be sorely missed. Is VirusBarrier x6 next?

I don't get it. NetBarrier cost 89$ and Mac Premium Bundle 2013 which includes VirusBarrier 2013 + Identity Scrubber + Family Protector + Washing Machine + Personal Backup AND Net Barrier 2013 also cost 89$ ? This doesn't make sense.

I loved to use Netbarrier (Virusbarrier) until version x6. Lastly Intego split up back Virusbarrier into Virusbarrier and Netbarrier. With this Intego radically cut back the versatility and the attributes that were so important: fine tuning and manual configuration. Now Netbarrier is not more than a tool for keeping things simple. But the life (and the internet) is by far not as simple. To make things worse Netbarrier needs a lot of memory and cpu-load. Conclusion: I am now looking for alternatives.

After years as a satisfied customer (and reseller) using NetBarrier X5 we upgraded to the X6 (VirusBarrier) as to keep up with new versions of OS X. In doing that we left a lean well working, and to all other alternatives, superior firewall to a large software with a lot of good stuff* we did not needed. This did not represent a problem (other from one or two clients messing things up) as VirusBarrier is easily configurable. What was not obvious in the transition was that we were forced into a subscription system. Earlier the subscription was only about virus/malware definitions, now suddenly (and very quietly) it was the firewall itself! The Intego site is no clear at all about this; 'buy a protection' all over, not 'pay for a subscription'. In the future we (and our clients) are to fork out 60% of the initial cost yearly (in a one year plan)! Even strange companies as PGP (now Symantech) has a perpetual alternative. Worse, the reasoning for this is absolute ridiculous, Intego site; 'using out-of-date security software is dangerous'. This becomes completely nonsense when the Intego protection just stops if you forget to pay!! That must be much worse than being out-of-date. It is only for the $ as I see it. So, now back to reinstalling latest NetBarrier on all machines an clients, and stop all planed upgrades. *although in a test run it catches only 4 out of 15 virus (ClamXav detects them all in any package) Worm.BadTrans.B1 FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND W32.Elkern.C FOUND Worm.SomeFool.Z FOUND Worm.SomeFool.Z FOUND W32.PrettyPark FOUND Worm.Sircam FOUND Worm.Sircam FOUND Worm.Sircam FOUND

Beware! If you wish to install a trial version of VirusBarrier X6, it uninstalls NetBarrier X5. At the moment, I'm having a hell of a time with Intego support (!) trying to recover NB.
