First, pay $70 for Virusbarrier, then after using it for a year pay $30 per year for virus definition updates? No way in hell will I do that regardless of how good it may be. Make it a lot more reasonably priced and we'll talk, but not before then. And there's no real Mac virus threat out there currently.

For today, know that v10.9.18 is currently *only* available to a select group of users. Intego tech support told me the final version will be out in few days. I'm assuming it is currently in beta testing.

As of TODAY v10.9.18 is officially available to all. At the moment, NetUpdate is clueless. But it’s the version that downloads from Intego’s Downloads page. So have at it!

I've been using VB for decades with no problems; the updates have worked perfectly. I currently use VB on my iMac Pro, 10.13.2. I really sympathize with ppl having problems, but through all the versions, I've had no problems. I'm able to switch between startup drives ...

I have just purchased your Mac Optimizer and it will not launch, please rectify this for me. Also on a subsequent attempt to install mac Optimizer a pop up said Only X was being installed, I did not purchase this or continue with this install. I have also just purchased Disc Diet which installed without issue. I have also unresolved issues with a package I purchased a time ago.(Screen shot of purchases below) Each time I try to install a pop up message says “Insert the (nuli) disc to continue” or “Insert the Virus BarrierX9 to continue"I have no idea what these specified discs are or how to access it, can you please help with these issues.. Bought the security package a couple of weeks ago and couldn't download anything. One app even prompted me to insert a disc ! (Yes, a physical disc as if this was still 2007). Total waste of money. I haven't had time yet to request a refund

Same here! I bought the "security package" with this anti virus Programme. I could not install anything. One of the apps even prompted me to insert the "disc" as if we were still in 2007 instead of 2017. I haven't had time to ask for a refund yet. Waste of money! By the lack of reaction by the MacUpdate team I assume that they hve realised it's a fraud and so they seem to have decided that it's better not to reply at all

No good. No matter what I tried, the software did not download. Eventually, once I did download, it kept asking for more money!. Said, I do not have permission to open it. Waste of money

Why not just use Sophos? It's free and no yearly update fees. Also; I don't understand why updates can't list the changes instead of: "Release notes were unavailable when this listing was updated".

Sophos is a nightmare and will render your computer unuseable if you are a power user. For neophytes only who keep their files exactly where Apple expects.

I have to agree regarding Sophos. I work with Mac security and I've never, ever seen an application scatter so many invasive files into an operating system outside of Microsoft Windows. Uninstalling Sophos is literally a nightmare and I didn't find it did anything VirusBarrier doesn't do better and easier. Sorry.

If you're looking for free, I highly recommend Malwarebytes instead. For free, it's excellent and doesn't clog your OS.

I actually like Intego's VirusBarrier software, though my problem is that you never stop paying for it–unlike an antivirus software like ClamAV. You pay for the software, and you pay for antivirus updates (I think you get a year free or thereabouts from purchasing it). So it does its job, but it's also a money pit.

To be fair, ClamXav, which is what you meant to say, sources its malware definitions from the ClamAV project, which provides them for free. ClamAV is an open source project. ClamXav is a well written GUI for ClamAV plus some nice added features beyond ClamAV.

Intego, on the other hand, collects and describes malware on their own, which requires employed effort. The result is a more complete collection of malware definitions compared to the ClamAV project where, I can personally attest, it can be difficult to convince them to keep up with contemporary Mac malware or to convince them to even accept freely provided malware definitions.

The result is that Intego's VirusBarrier is the more reliable and up-to-date anti-malware program, plus they provide further useful features beyond ClamXav. VirusBarrier easily competes with the best of other Mac anti-malware programs. But you have to pay for up-to-date functionality.

What I do is wait for sales on Intego's Mac Internet Security suite, which includes a full year of malware definitions for VirusBarrier. It's cheaper than paying the malware definitions update fee every year. Plus it includes the NetBarrier program, which provides two-way firewall protection for those who don't already have it.

The downside of Intego, as Tim-Holman points out here in the review thread, is that they occasionally mark useful software as 'malware' without explaining why. If Intego provided in-program explanations of all the malware they detect, it would be an extremely useful and important addition to their software. We can wish...
