GitKraken7.4.0

29 October 2020

Cross-platform Git client.

Overview

GitKraken is a cross-platform Git client with efficiency, elegance, and reliability at its core. It was made for devs, by devs. GitKraken makes Git commands and processes easy, fast, and intuitive. Enjoy a visually appealing experience that requires fewer interactions, allows for more fluid workflows, and provides total functionality.

What's new in GitKraken

Version 7.4.0:
New:
  • These are the key points of GitKraken v7.4.0:
  • Users may now authenticate their GitKraken account using Google OAuth.
  • We have added a header to the commit graph, making resizing columns easier.
  • We have added the option to display additional columns of information in the commit graph:
  • Commit author
  • Commit date/time
  • Commit SHA
  • GitHub users now have the ability to create draft pull requests in GitKraken.
Improvements:
  • These improvements fit with GitKraken like a lock and key.
  • Now, when assigning an assignee or reviewer to a pull request, the dropdown menu will display the user’s name and username.
  • Autocomplete suggestions will now appear when creating or editing GitHub filters.
  • Search results will be more accurate when opening a repo via the Fuzzy Finder.
  • Keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + K can now be used to toggle the visibility of the commit panel on and off, while keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + J can be used to collapse and expand the left panel. The visibility of these panels can also be toggled from the View menu.
Bug fixes:
  • Thanks for putting up with these door-key release notes we’re almost finished.
  • Users will again receive a notification when GitKraken automatically resolves a merge conflict.
  • Branches will load in the Pull Request panel in repositories that have a space or hyphen in the repo name.
  • Users will now be prevented from setting editor tab size to 0 as that was causing performance issues when viewing diffs.
  • Finishing a release branch with Gitflow when the commit on the local master and develop branches are the same will no longer cause GitKraken to display a blank screen.
  • The Add a remote and checkout context menu option will only appear once.
  • Issue tracking for GitHub Enterprise will work for instances that have a URL path or protocol.

This is a fantastic product in 2019. I don't know anything about the previous versions. I use 6.2.x. I watch my buddies use github's junky client and or telnet direct, what a nightmare they live in. GitKraken is a masterpiece of version control software. Branches are visual. You can SEE what just happen to a recent update with a nice interface. If you depend on Github for your source, this is THE best client.

Git kraken has a lot of promise, but there developers are no good and refuse to provide support or even recognize issues. High ram usage, cpu usage, and a slow interface is what greets you on any real repo. Its overpriced for the kind of support given, and can sit for hours doing what source tree or terminal commands can complete in seconds. I would never trust them to even have the capability to improve this product.

2/6/20 This failed to connect to Github out of the box with a 1003 error. I emailed the company and got an autoreply. I never signed up on their site. Proceeded to get a bunch of marketing emails about all sorts of deals. Finally, support contacted me to tell me it's an "authorization error" but by then, I'd tossed Gitkraken into the trash with extreme prejudice. I complained to the tech support person about all the marketing email and that their marketing person was being way to aggressive. I had to explain that I'd never logged in or signed up for ANYTHING but sending them a support email. And that, in my opinion, did not give them permission to SPAM me to death. The support person "passed this feedback onto their team" but I still continue to get SPAM from them, which I'll continue to report to SENDGRID and their content provider. 3/10 tried 6.5.4 and it logged me into Github w/o a problem, so they fixed that. Apparently this app uses a subscription model ($30/year) just to access private repos. No thanks. Tossed it in the trash again.

Crashes immediately upon opening, and has for several versions.

Another electron based crapware. Avoid like the plague. Tower and SourceTree are much better native options.

This app used to work somewhat ok. They release automatic updates for it, changing the interface and other "features", and now it is a piece of garbage that sits here saying, "Opening Repo" and won't do anything else. Tried reinstalling the app.

Just another JS/HTML crap. Very slow and unstable.

I surely would prefer any of my apps to be Electron/JS and Java free as well, but when alternatives are not so plentiful, I can only complain. If I understand correctly, Tower is great alternative, but there is no free use option. Now I'm downgrading GitKraken to 4 starts, not because of Electron, but because there is no GitLab integration, and SSH option is not good enough for me any more. And, so I've now switched to Java *sigh* based app SmartGit.

I use GitKraken to run (update, modify) a site on GitLab Pages. This git client works well with GitLab and I did not need to perform any sort of complicated integration with the service. UI and workflow are very pleasing and straightforward. The app is free. 3 PROS and cannot think of any CONS.
