Menu bar app to keep your Mac from sleeping.

Overview

Owly is a menu bar utility that prevents your Mac from automatically sleeping. What this means is that Owly ensures your Mac’s screen never goes dim, no screen savers appear and that your Mac doesn’t enter sleep mode.

By right clicking the Owly icon on the menu bar, the app can toggle on/off. When the icon is red, Owly is active and will keep your Mac wide awake. When the icon is black, the app is no longer actively ensuring your Mac doesn’t enter sleep.

Owly is useful for when you want to keep certain information showing on your screen whilst whilst you may not be using the keyboard/mouse actively. Some examples are:

  • Watching a video (non fullscreen mode) and you don’t want your Mac to sleep
  • If you are using your screen to view live updating stats
  • If you are downloading files and want to be able to monitor the status whilst you may be sat at a distance from your Mac

$ man caffeinate

Said that, I like very much StatsCenter, from FIPLAB too, as it only consumes system resources when I check it in the Notifications sidebar.

Sometimes I need to prevent my Mac from sleep mode. I found Owly to be quite good and handy. I can choose the display to stay turned on or off which I consider a big advantage. Besides, I just like the design of the app.

Why would anyone buy Owly when it's free? More seriously, I started using Owly over Caffeine because Owly has a "let screen sleep if batter is below x%" option, which seemed helpful to me, given that my '09 MacBook Pro is starting to have a gimpy battery.

Owly does what it says on the can, and prevents my Mac from sleeping, including preventing the dispaly from sleeping. But sometimes I want to keep my Mac awake but want to sleep the display, and I can do that with Owly, too. I have a hot corner set to sleep the display, and when I do the display stays dark while my Mac stays awake. I like it!
