Stay Awake is a utility app which can be used to prevent your Mac from sleeping, even if you close the lid of your MacBook.

Features:
  • Prevent the display from sleeping.
  • Prevent the system from sleeping, even if you close the lid of your MacBook.
  • Prevent only if the Mac is running from AC power.

No longer actively developed. This guy is selling the same crap under different names in the appstore. Used to work. But not any longer.

does it work if you have your system set to sleep on schedule, in energy saver preferences? I haven't found a single app which prevents scheduled sleep temporarily...

Why would you schedule sleep then keep it awake - are you trying to torture the poor thing?

Well, gatovadio's question makes a lot of sense. When e.g. starting a big download or a lengthy backup operation before going to sleep it would be nice to have a tool that you can simply start along to keep the machine running without having to go into the Preferences and change the settings (and then having to remember to change all the settings back on the following morning).
