Since the "similar software" is not finding it, look at BitTorrent Sync if all you want is to sync files between devices anywhere you have an internet connection. There is no need for your files to be stored in any server along the way. Do a general search here at MU or go to http://www.bittorrent.com/sync.

You do not need any servers... cloud or otherwise... to sync. Though still in beta at this time, I have been using it since release without a glitch. Read the PDF manual for how to refine both what it does and how it does it to control impact upon your local network. It can be easily refined. And yes it is free.

I liked the recent 50GB offer from Box so I have given it a good try. However there are too many obstacles to happiness with this service at this time. First, it is all Java based and requires some Java security and browser settings that are more risky than I care for; plus Java is strikingly fugly on modern computers. Second, file size is limited to 250mb. Third, you cannot use Symbolic links or aliases as you can with Dropbox and Copy. There are also apparently related problems with recursive folders. Finally, file naming limitations are not something I encountered but I would run up against them soon if I continued. All in all, thanks but no thanks for now.

So is the Mac app is java based? Can't seem to find this out on the site.

Java is a deal-breaker. I won't run that since there is too much of a security concern involved.

Free 50 GB at Box.com seems to be awesome BUT: No sync of filenames with German umlauts and OS X package files - while Dropbox supports both seamlessly. I'd have to rename too much files. So I'll stick with DropBox for now.

"Error syncing 398 files": Name not supported.
Box don't sync files that doesn't meet the naming rules of BoxOs.

No desktop sync unless you pay for their service. I don't care how many free GB they offer. If I can't sync between desktop and iOS devices, it's worthless to me. I'll happily stick with DropBox for now.

This isn't true…. BoxSync has been around for a long time an it works perfectly. v4.0 was released 2 days before your post.

Box Sync 3.x is an easy to use, high quality, bug free product. On the rare occasions that the sync has a problem, just quit the sync from the menu bar, run the sync fix program, then restart Box from system preferences.

DO NOT "UPGRADE" to BOX Sync 4. I made that mistake and am trying to go back now. Where Box Sync 3 is 5 stars, Box Sync 4 is 0 stars.

Trouble syncing files. Stops with error code 5 (whatever that is). Deleted and reinstalled 3.4 no trouble after that. Very reliable.

Box is a cloud storage, syncing, sharing and collaboration system designed for business use. It is well maintained and has excellent support staff. BUT:

Box requires Windows naming for all files it backs up to the cloud. OUCH!!! That means no use of Windows reserved characters. That means THESE characters are off limits:

/ ? % * : | " < > . and the Space character. No spaces!

Box also has not-a-clue what a UNIX/OS X package file is and will NOT back them up. Got that? NOT back them up. That kills off a slew of files on any Mac including all apps, plugins, sparse bundle disk images, blahblahblah. Obviously, their servers are 100% Windows, NOT Mac friendly in the least. NOT MAC FRIENDLY.

BUT: Box is fine for text files and other simple data formats, as long as you're willing to deal with the Windows naming character restrictions. I dealt with it! So I use Box.

I also use Box thanks to some good timing, craftiness and nice offers from Box whereby I snagged 50 GB of space. (Not a typo!) So I figured I might as well use it. As a research obsessive, I have GBs worth of collected information files. There's nothing private in the collection. Therefore, I let Box back them up and sync them to my other Mac.

Box very nicely suggests new names for your files that violate the stupid Windows naming restrictions. BUT! I went into SHOCK when I first let Box at my files because it FLOODED me with renaming suggestions. I have a lot of files. It took an hour to click through the renaming, not-a-joke. And lord help you if you attempt to stop that process! Don't stop it! Don't! Going back to force renaming is a horrorshow. It can be done but is an even more shocking PITA.

Once you get the names straight, the backup and syncing work fine. I like being able to access exactly the same files on two computers across my network via the cloud backup. It also lets you send URLs to associates where they can access whatever you choose to make public. There are a few other bells and whistles to read about at their website.

There is NO encryption, just to warn you. This is NOT a service for PRIVACY. Therefore, this is yet another restriction when using Box. Be prepared.

I like Box a lot, for what it is. It is a well run service. But if you don't want to deal with all the idiotic Windows naming and flat file restrictions and lack of encryption, go ELSEWHERE!

The two best Mac-friendly, privacy maintaining, illegal-surveillance-proof, client-side encrypted cloud services I know of are Arq and SpiderOak. But they have their quirks as well. Therefore, homework required.
