I've been using MP4Tools and MKVTools on and off for some time now. Although it can useful for some very quick batch remuxing of MKV to MP4 files, this software is just so riddled with bugs that I'm hard pressed to recommend it since there are much better alternatives. My main beef is that it completely ignores chapter markers. If you want to remux (use passthrough options) a video and prefer to keep the chapter markers, you will lose them completely. The second problem is with the feature to extract a segment of an MP4 video. I tried extracting a single segment of about 7 minutes, and I instead got several thousand extractions lasting about 1 second each. That was a heck of a mess to clean up. Since getting fed up with the faulty features in MP4Tools (and MKVTools, which has similar issues), I've moved on to other software. I've gotten particularly fond of iFFmpeg. It's a much more difficult piece of software to grasp due to the overwhelming number of options it has available, but once I worked out a preset to do simple audio/video passthroughs (remux), it's been a piece of cake and works flawlessly. Another great alternative is Subler. It's not good for batch remuxing, but excels in what it can do.

Indispensable! Great app! When will the developer provide an update? I hope it's soon... I'd like to see support for chapters, support for 7.1 sound, support for Dolby Digital Plus, HEVC X265 support, an updated device list, to name but a few.

Failed several times in a row to do the job. What else can I say than it is a waste of time and you'd be better off looking elsewhere? Nice concept, but this one needs some work before an official release!

This app (like its counterpart MKVtools) is invaluable for remuxing a multi-language file, for example, keeping only the language you want, or for moving the content of such .ts file in a .mp4 container. Comparing it to VLC or HandBrake, like the former commenter did, is a nonsense to me: I've been using both for years and they simply don't offer remux functionality (well, there's a way to kinda do it in VLC, but you can't choose which audio flux, and it's not as easy and efficient anyway). I agree that the presentation of the app is misleading as it focuses on conversion but it's a lot different compared to most other converters. Yes, if you strictly need conversion, use Handbrake! In the case I mentioned above, I regularly need to remux .ts files to mp4 because then, if I want to sync subtitles, the utility I use doesn't recognize .ts files. Unfortunately, some streams I record have issues with their audio format and in such case I have to convert the audio track in MP4tools but without converting the video track! I've been using Remux.app before, and it usually works ok but not always — and doesn't offer conversion, if needed. Another free contender is Subler, but I often had issues with it.

Don't waste your money. VLC converts things, as does HandBrake (by using VLC)

Warning! Upgrading to version 3.5.0 wipes out all your presets (this wasn't quite clear to me from the developer's note that "you will need to re-enter your registration code and other preferences"), so make a note of what each preset does before upgrading if you want to be able to recreate the presets as easily as possible. I'm disappointed the dev didn't put in the extra effort to migrate presets and preferences, to save users the hassle of having to recreate the from scratch.

I need to convert mp4 movie video files to TS ( audio/video ) plus add subtitle files in order to then burn to a DVD that will be playable on my DVD/TV player. Will this app do it ? There does not seem to be a contact point for the developer except to purchase their products.

No. Try Toast instead.

Thanks for your suggestion/input Unfortunately there is no way to add subtitles using Toast.

However since my posting in July 2015 the developer is back on line and offers a fully functional " trial " version of his software as a try before you pay incentive. Thank you to the developer.

Works quite well but the interface needs some cleaning up. Also it's a real shame the batch extract option of subtitles only offers .ass files (which will not open in Aegisub) and not .srt files.

Great software. While re-written documentation or a simplified user interface might help if one tries to do some of the more complex tasks the app can do, transcoding or re-wrapping videos into iOS or OSX compatible formats works beautifully. Rarely I find a video crafted in some bizarre fashion that MP4Tools doesn't like but Handbrake usually can deal with it. It's good to have a number of tools handy but MP4Tools is my go-to app first.

What are you talking about? Try IFFMpeg. It can all what this three apps can do, and much more. If you don't need demuxing, I use and suggest adapter. It's free. Very competent and also very fast.

I’ve been using this and its sibling (AVItools) since they were first released, and I used MKVtools (my favorite) before that for over a year, and I love ‘em all (though splitting MKVtools into 3 different apps seems a bit pointless and/or greedy to me). However, v. 3.1.2 has a serious problem that kills its usefulness: When I used it on 2 different mp4 files to remove a Japanese audio stream and a couple of subtitles from each movie and remux them into new mp4s that kept only the English audio stream, the audio disappeared. In case you’re wondering, 1) I know these apps inside and out, so it wasn’t operator error; 2) the problem occurred with 2 different movie files and on 2 different Macs, so it wasn’t a one-off bug; and 3) when I re-did both movies with MKVtools, they came out fine, further proving #1 and #2 above. Once it’s fixed, MP4tools will again be a decent app. There are freeware apps (MKVtoolnix, remux, Subler, etc.) that together can nearly do everything MP4tools does. However, the convenience of having all those capabilities together in MKVtools was worth $20 to me. But now that this developer has split up all those capacities into 3 different apps, I’d rather just stick with all the other freeware.

Brilliant. The passthrough saves so much time. Burnt my subtitles without fault. And only $4.99. What more could you ask. Would like to make an mpg file for my DVD but hey, you can't have everything.
