I've used this for years, upgrading to the paid-for version when it was released. This is the best, most solid and easy to use free-form notes application I've used. I used to use OneNote when it was the best thing Microsoft had ever written but I think Growly Notes surpasses it (even more so now OneNote for the Mac is so limited).

Great product

Growly Notes ver 1 was the best note-taking app I had found, and I tried many of them. Growly Notes ver 2 is no longer free but is actually much better. The developer clearly put a lot of thought into every aspect of this.

For me there was a learning curve to understand all the capabilities that can be accessed via the tabbed sidebar. The ways of handling formats (e.g., bullet lists, fonts, highlights, special symbols, indentation, ruler, styles) has changed from ver 1. Mostly this meant reading several sections of the extremely well-written docs as opposed to either scanning or ignoring them which is what I usually am able to do.

If there were a freeware app that came close to doing all this app does, I would not have upgraded. But, I have looked hard in the past and I really like this app. I consider it well worth the price.

Incidentally, though this is my primary notes app, I DO use other note-taking apps as well for special purposes. I use Evernote because it can automatically sync with File-This-Fetch for managing financial records. I use Sidenote for hot short-term items (it is opened by mousing over to the side of the screen), and TextWrangler for coding. But I find Growly Notes the most capable for general purpose notes because it is easy to apply formats and one can drag and drop both text and objects with ease.

Unfortunately, no longer free, but really worth the price asked. I find it still to be the best Notes app for Mac. The new interface is nice, though I would have much preferred a floating palette to the fixed area like in Pages 5 to make better use of limited screen real estate. It gives the user much control over everything, though I can't find a way to change the grid size for positioning. If the author does come out with the iPad app as hinted at, it will be totally fabulous. I just hope there will be way to sync locally instead of using iCloud. I clicked on 4, but cannot change my rating to 4.5, which I think this app deserves.

I agree. I'm not a fan of the MAS. However, the developer on his website states "Version 1 will no longer be distributed or supported by GrowlyBird." That's a shame for those who don't really want version 2 or to use the MAS.

compared to Circus Ponies and Curio, this is definitely a worth competitor and a decent OneNote replacement. My main issue with this app, like a previous reviewer has said, is the textbox. Growly Notes textbox is weak compared Ponies' and Curios'. For a notetaking app, the textbox should be bread and butter feature, where it expands regardless of the length of the first line.

Great place to keep information you need to get at quickly and keep well organized. The way it moves text boxes is a bit quirky, but all in all, I use this app weekly! I love it.

OK, reading the other comments/reviews, this isn't news: Growly Notes is a great app.

There's one thing I'd like to add: for those who don't like the appearance of the app, it can be customised: in the Preferences, just switch from "fun" to "serious" window layout, and it looks much more like your common mac app. If you don't like the app's icon, just replace it with a clipart of your choice.

The app itself is very good UI design, rock stable, fast… Seems there is (was) lots of talent at Microsoft – the developer worked 10 years for MS – it says quite a lot about MS management, if they are not able to keep such good developers (and those devs go afterwards mac only development :-)

Why isn't Growly Write here on MacUpdate? Seems to be a nice app too…

One last thing: I like it that the developer included an "Uninstall" command in the menu. Very user friendly, so you don't have to hunt down files in hidden folders, as with so many other mac apps, if you want to get rid of the app; that said, Growly Notes isn't an "invasive" app at all. And yes, actually I don't know if the uninstall command even works, because, umm: why should I want to delete an app like that…

The link here on MacUpdate points to the 1.2.9 version. Going to the developer website, the proper 1.2.10 version can be downloaded.

This is a fantastic free piece of software - for something that so many people need, there always needs to be a freeware version for the little guy. This is feature rich, and functions great. Would like to customise the interface a little more, but that is being really picky.
Keep up the good work, and THANK YOU.

Click anywhere and start typing. It's really that simple.

Notebooks are organized into sections (the larger tabs on the left in the image above), each of which contains as many pages as you like. All the open notebooks are shown in one window, for easy navigation and quick jumps.

Note: Growly Notes 2 is not free, and is available only from the Mac App Store--and version 1 is no longer supported. Take a look at the pros and cons of upgrading.
