DropSync overview

DropSync is a folder updater for web developers, photo professionals, scientists or anyone in need of a fast, automated and highly customizable way to repeatedly copy files from one place to another. Works with removable hard drives, between computers on a local network and even between your mac and a remote server over SSH. Set up a pair of folders and easily browse both sides even if one folder is on a remote server (via sftp). Then select items for include/exclude and click to perform an update in the desired direction. Previews show you exactly what will be changed and once you're satisfied that things are working, you can setup DropSync to automatically watch a source folder and update in the background. Under the hood DropSync uses the amazing rsync tool to perform its changes. This means that its about as fast and memory efficient as a syncing engine can get, and we've worked hard to ensure that DropSync itself will stay responsive even when huge syncs are happening in the background.

Features
  • Easily include/exclude subfolders using the built-in browser
  • Automated (one-way) syncing when a file changes in the source folder
  • Status bar only mode lets you monitor and initiate syncs without opening the main app
  • Detailed searchable previews
  • An SFTP based browser that lets you see and select folders on remote computers
  • Custom filters let you include or exclude files based on patterns in filenames
  • Browsable history of syncing activity, including detailed logs of every change
  • Only transfers the parts of files that have changed for maximum speed over a network
  • AppleScript support lets you create custom syncing workflows
  • Almost complete support for custom rsync options

Wanted to sync two to folders (with lots on subfolders and files in them), between my Mac and my server. First with Transmit, then with Forklift. After about 30 minutes of waiting I gave up with both. I was ready to just use GIT to push the updates to the server but it's not ideal either. Then I tried the same with DropSync and it finished in less than 10 seconds! I have no idea how it can be so fast. I know it's just a GUI for rsync, but still. It can synchronise several dozens of folders faster, than an FTP program can list one directory. I manually edited a few files in a deeply nested directory just to check that DropSync doesn't cheat (ignores directories), because it's so hard to believe that I can crawl all these directories that fast. Wow! It's very straightforward to use, you'll find everything very quickly and can add custom rules for synchronisation very easily.

Highly recommended, been using it for several years (since early 2.* days). Intuitive, quick and reliable - and simple to use. Well worth trying out if you are looking for a simple sync app/utility. Plenty of options available for you to tweak your syncs.

Needed to sync stuff between my work iMac and my travelling MacBook Pro and this seemed to be the answer. Had a couple of questions and the dev gave me detailed answers promptly. Working flawlessly and very easy to use.

Does what app's costing 4x or 10x as much do. The interface is just a teensy bit spartan but overall features/stability is excellent value for money. I was really torn between this and Chronosync but in the end I went for Dropsync & I do not regret it at all. There are freeware rsync front ends (eg. Backlist) but Dropsync appears better supported since the author is earning money from it rather than just a hobby. Support for future updates is important IMHO.
