Needed to sync stuff between my work iMac and my travelling MacBook Pro and this seemed to be the answer. Had a couple of questions and the dev gave me detailed answers promptly. Working flawlessly and very easy to use.

Does what app's costing 4x or 10x as much do.
The interface is just a teensy bit spartan but overall features/stability is excellent value for money.

I was really torn between this and Chronosync but in the end I went for Dropsync & I do not regret it at all.

There are freeware rsync front ends (eg. Backlist) but Dropsync appears better supported since the author is earning money from it rather than just a hobby. Support for future updates is important IMHO.

I was looking for a backup solution that didn't cost an arm and a leg, was easy to use, and allowed me to send it to my own hosting space. Dropsync did all of these with great ease. It is easy to use and took less than 5 minutes to get up and running. Other solutions required difficult authentication files to be uploaded and installed using SSH. This proved to be to complicated for what I needed. Dropsync was very easy to setup and use, just like logging into an FTP account. I had to email their support team and got a very quick response that solved my issue. This is definitely a must have app!

I've been hunting for an app that does this for a while. I'm syncing a local folder to my FTP site. It's syncs in real time just like Dropbox would and even links to Growl to alert you when the sync is complete. It only took me about 5 minutes to get it up and running. I'm using only unidirectional sync. Not sure if bidirectional works. $10 is a great deal. There are several more expensive alternatives that do not work this well.

When I delete a local file, the file on the server is not being deleted. Does this maybe have something to do with my folder permission (Linux server)?

Hi,

File deletion is turned off by default, but its fairly easy to enable. I've written up the details at

http://mudflatsoftware.com/dropsync_support.html#deletions

Hopefully that helps

Excellent application, makes what I've always found a bit daunting (rsync) easy to use.... I use this to back up 2 media players and 2 network drives across my network, to external drives, something I could not do with other software (besides rsync!).... Developer always happy to help out too....

Seems nice. Unfortunately will only sync from a local volume to external. Will not sync external to external.

Can recommend this excellent app. I can sync all my files wirelessly to an external hard drive connected to my airport extreme base station - something that Carbon Copy Cloner can't do. The setup is fast and easy, and within minutes of downloading the app, I was backing up my files. DropSync works nicely in the background so I am able to work on other tasks. Highly recommended!

Can't comment on the app yet, but the developer is very responsive and keen to help out. I asked him by email if DropSync could be used to keep the Applications folders of my Mac OS 10.6.5 MacBook and iMac in sync over a home AirPort network, and he researched the heck out of it before sending me a detailed and friendly response.

The answer was a qualified 'Probably,' and I got the impression that he will have tried and figured out the complexities just as a form of mental calisthenics before I ever find the time to try it myself!

Now I can't wait to give DropSync a whirl.

I can tell you right now that syncing the Applications folder is out of the questions. While it might work for some Apps it will definitely not work for a lot of them. To begin with the Apps are not stored in your user account so you will have problems with file permissions. Secondly, lots of Apps depend on files the install elsewhere on your disk. Look under /Library/Application Support bot in your user account and on the root of your disk. Those files will not tag along on a sync. Thirdly, when you have made a mess there is no support to be had from anyone since this is not supported.

Don't go there. You have been warned...

DropSync efficiently syncs folders from one computer to another, or from a computer to a hard drive. It's seriously fast, works with removable hard drives, other computers on local networks and even remote computers using SSH.

Features:
  • Automated (one-way) syncing when a file changes in the source folder
  • Detailed searchable previews
  • Fine grained control over purging of deleted files (choose direction and folder)
  • An sftp based browser that lets you see and select folders on remote computers
  • Browsable history of syncing activity, including detailed logs of every change
  • Only transfers the parts of files that have changed for maximum speed over a network
  • AppleScript support lets you create custom syncing workflows
  • Support for custom syncing engine (rsync) options

Ideal for:
  • Updating on-the-go documents to a USB stick
  • Mirroring a website from a remote host to your local computer or vice-versa
  • Web development. Edit files locally and have them automatically and efficiently uploaded to a server
  • Duplicating files like photos, music and websites to a second computer or external hard drive.
  • Backing up files to a remote server. Works with any server that supports ssh and rsync.
  • Scientific applications involving large amounts of frequently updated data.
Under the hood, DropSync uses an industrial-strength syncing engine (rsync), which means that it is both fast and reliable. It works by updating only the parts of files that have changed between source and destination. This makes it particularly suited to syncing over a network because the amount of data that needs to be transferred is minimised.
