BackupList+ overview

BackupList+ is a simple, accurate, and fast backup utility for OS X. It is a wrapper application for rsync 3.0.8, a powerful file transfer application that preserves all OSX metadata perfectly. It can make perfect full system clones as well as snapshot-style incremental backups. You can create lists of your important folders and files that you want to save to an external hard drive or other destination. Restoring iTunes, iPhoto, Mail and other apps, or transferring them to another computer, is easy with backuplist+. There are many other options for the beginner or expert and you can schedule backups hourly, daily or weekly. The elegant and intuitive interface makes it easy and fun to use. An excellent new version 8.0, is available for users of OS 10.6 at the Author's website.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

I just want to congratulate the developer of this great app. I've tried a few backup apps before backuplist+ and this is definitely the best so far. It's so easy to use and it does exactly what I need, scheduled backup of whatever folders I want. Thanks a lot Mr. Rob DuToit!

Excellent program and excellent support. I had more questions than problems, but Rob took the time to answer all my questions and help me streamline the program for my needs. I've been using BackupList+ for years backing up my video and audio collections without ever a problem or delay in spite of numerous MacOS system upgrades. Outstanding program. Outstanding developer.

I am using BackupList+ on a 2015 iMac running HighSierra. In my opinion BackupList+ is almost as feature filled as Carbon Copy Cloner and with more features than SuperDuper. If in doubt give it a try. Also, Rob (the developer) just gave me great help for problems I have been having with backing up using the other 2 programs. I am now using BackupList+ since I like its looks, features and operation. I clone nightly to different destination drives and backup my documents folder dailey in the morning.

Between BackupList+ being able to do a Mirror/Clone of the entire HD for Local storage and then we have Arq as our "Hourly" backup for each machine, we are 100% covered for something serious. First, the local drives are backed up bi-weekly, they are stored under lock/key in a fire proof safe, this way we have all of the updates. With Arq backing up hourly, and we get 1tb per person on MS Office, we have their entire user folder backed up, so once we recover with a local HD we can download the latest data back to a new machine. There is one catch... You have to quit Arq Agent to get BackupList+ to perform the Clone/Mirror backup. So while minor, it a puts us in a situation that we know that we are covered and it's not costing us an arm and a leg! I recommend making a small donation to the dev for this lovely app!

Questions: Does BackupList+ make bootable clones? And does it make 'smart updates' like SuperDuper? Thus, only adjusting the recently changed files, while leaving the rest untouched?

I'm impressed with simplicity of this application. Does everything what the "big" guns do, including syncing. I'll surely donate.

I really like it, its light weight but you can do all the stuff (backup non- and incremental, sync, etc). Sadly after doing 2 backups it hangs now on my system when i start a backup. There seems to be a bug somewhere.

8.5.4 is currently broken on my MacOS 10.8.5 system. rsync doesn't work showing "root helper not installed"; Tried rebooting but it still doesn't work; I went back to 8.4 which is stable and the interface is better for me.

This is a truly great piece of software. It's donationware. Like me you will probably donate to give a small reward for what you got.
I admit I use other software (SuperDuper and CCC) for making backup clones (I bought them before I found BackupList+).
To me Backuplist+ is a very versatile tool for backing up different folders (different sources) to a backup target, directly attached or via network. It just works, it's been very reliable (uses rsync). Even though you have many options to tailor fit it to your needs the GUI is not cluttered and simple enough to get anyone started.
And the developer is a nice guy who will help you out if you need it.

So while I can't comment on the cloning part, I would highly recommend giving BackupList+ a try. You may find (like me) that you have all you need (and more).

Hi, I was using backupList+ on my previous Macbook running Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and it was fine. Then the harddisk died and I got a new Macbook running Yosemite (10.10.3). I tried to install backupList+ but it doesn't work. When I clicked on the .dmg file, and it opens up fine. But then the "copy to applications" window show the Applications folder as a white paper (not a blue folder) and I cannot copy drag the backupList+ icon to it (it shows a white circle with a slash). Please help, I want to restore the backup in this new Mac.

Backuplist+ remains my go-to app for regular backups, including cloning my startup disk at least once a week. Great support. And the new version -- a major overhaul -- is even better. Well worth a donation.

Great free backup app! The feature set is robust compared to other synchronization apps, even many paid apps. I use BackupList+ to manually run backup sets from the menubar after working in Lightroom or making changes to my iTunes or Calibre libraries. Simple and easy, and the menubar icon serves not only as a shortcut but as a reminder to backup. The GUI could use some work, but a few minutes in BackupList+ Help clarifies everything. Yes, this FREE app has detailed documentation via Apple's Help viewer! Also consider that GUIs for backup apps are notoriously difficult to create, given the difficulty of prioritizing what are all equally critical options. I don't believe I've tried any backup apps costing less than $40 with GUIs that are intuitive. Good GUIs require a lot of time, and if the developer isn't getting paid for that time, expect only a "good enough" GUI. That said, BackupList+'s GUI is superior to plenty of paid backup apps (looking at you, Sync Folders Pro). I've used ChronoSync, and it lacks BackupList+'s handy menubar icon. Once backup sets are created, it's the menu bar icon that is the focus of user interaction, and its menu provides shortcuts to all backup sets (and many other options and functions). Very cool! I have not used the scheduled backups feature, so I cannot comment on its stability, but BackupList+ has been rock solid for my usage pattern.

The number of backup folders just accumulates over time. It should be limited to the number specified in the "Incremental backups" field. Otherwise, what's that field doing? If I specify 3 incremental backups, I expect the number of backup folders to be exactly ≤ 3, not an ever increasing number of items. I think I have nearly 100 folders generated by backuplist+ now. Manually deleting them is not an option to me, especially not since the backups are incremental (no chance of knowing what folders are safe to delete).
