File copy and backup application.

Overview

BackupList+ is a simple, accurate, and fast backup utility for OS X. It is a wrapper application for rsync 3.0.8, a powerful file transfer application that preserves all OSX metadata perfectly. It can make perfect full system clones as well as snapshot-style incremental backups. You can create lists of your important folders and files that you want to save to an external hard drive or other destination. Restoring iTunes, iPhoto, Mail and other apps, or transferring them to another computer, is easy with backuplist+. There are many other options for the beginner or expert and you can schedule backups hourly, daily or weekly. The elegant and intuitive interface makes it easy and fun to use. An excellent new version 8.0, is available for users of OS 10.6 at the Author's website.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

I just want to congratulate the developer of this great app. I've tried a few backup apps before backuplist+ and this is definitely the best so far. It's so easy to use and it does exactly what I need, scheduled backup of whatever folders I want. Thanks a lot Mr. Rob DuToit!

Excellent program and excellent support. I had more questions than problems, but Rob took the time to answer all my questions and help me streamline the program for my needs. I've been using BackupList+ for years backing up my video and audio collections without ever a problem or delay in spite of numerous MacOS system upgrades. Outstanding program. Outstanding developer.

I am using BackupList+ on a 2015 iMac running HighSierra. In my opinion BackupList+ is almost as feature filled as Carbon Copy Cloner and with more features than SuperDuper. If in doubt give it a try. Also, Rob (the developer) just gave me great help for problems I have been having with backing up using the other 2 programs. I am now using BackupList+ since I like its looks, features and operation. I clone nightly to different destination drives and backup my documents folder dailey in the morning.

Between BackupList+ being able to do a Mirror/Clone of the entire HD for Local storage and then we have Arq as our "Hourly" backup for each machine, we are 100% covered for something serious. First, the local drives are backed up bi-weekly, they are stored under lock/key in a fire proof safe, this way we have all of the updates. With Arq backing up hourly, and we get 1tb per person on MS Office, we have their entire user folder backed up, so once we recover with a local HD we can download the latest data back to a new machine. There is one catch... You have to quit Arq Agent to get BackupList+ to perform the Clone/Mirror backup. So while minor, it a puts us in a situation that we know that we are covered and it's not costing us an arm and a leg! I recommend making a small donation to the dev for this lovely app!

Questions: Does BackupList+ make bootable clones? And does it make 'smart updates' like SuperDuper? Thus, only adjusting the recently changed files, while leaving the rest untouched?

I really like it, its light weight but you can do all the stuff (backup non- and incremental, sync, etc). Sadly after doing 2 backups it hangs now on my system when i start a backup. There seems to be a bug somewhere.

8.5.4 is currently broken on my MacOS 10.8.5 system. rsync doesn't work showing "root helper not installed"; Tried rebooting but it still doesn't work; I went back to 8.4 which is stable and the interface is better for me.

This is a truly great piece of software. It's donationware. Like me you will probably donate to give a small reward for what you got.
I admit I use other software (SuperDuper and CCC) for making backup clones (I bought them before I found BackupList+).
To me Backuplist+ is a very versatile tool for backing up different folders (different sources) to a backup target, directly attached or via network. It just works, it's been very reliable (uses rsync). Even though you have many options to tailor fit it to your needs the GUI is not cluttered and simple enough to get anyone started.
And the developer is a nice guy who will help you out if you need it.

So while I can't comment on the cloning part, I would highly recommend giving BackupList+ a try. You may find (like me) that you have all you need (and more).

Hi, I was using backupList+ on my previous Macbook running Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and it was fine. Then the harddisk died and I got a new Macbook running Yosemite (10.10.3). I tried to install backupList+ but it doesn't work. When I clicked on the .dmg file, and it opens up fine. But then the "copy to applications" window show the Applications folder as a white paper (not a blue folder) and I cannot copy drag the backupList+ icon to it (it shows a white circle with a slash). Please help, I want to restore the backup in this new Mac.

Great free backup app! The feature set is robust compared to other synchronization apps, even many paid apps. I use BackupList+ to manually run backup sets from the menubar after working in Lightroom or making changes to my iTunes or Calibre libraries. Simple and easy, and the menubar icon serves not only as a shortcut but as a reminder to backup. The GUI could use some work, but a few minutes in BackupList+ Help clarifies everything. Yes, this FREE app has detailed documentation via Apple's Help viewer! Also consider that GUIs for backup apps are notoriously difficult to create, given the difficulty of prioritizing what are all equally critical options. I don't believe I've tried any backup apps costing less than $40 with GUIs that are intuitive. Good GUIs require a lot of time, and if the developer isn't getting paid for that time, expect only a "good enough" GUI. That said, BackupList+'s GUI is superior to plenty of paid backup apps (looking at you, Sync Folders Pro). I've used ChronoSync, and it lacks BackupList+'s handy menubar icon. Once backup sets are created, it's the menu bar icon that is the focus of user interaction, and its menu provides shortcuts to all backup sets (and many other options and functions). Very cool! I have not used the scheduled backups feature, so I cannot comment on its stability, but BackupList+ has been rock solid for my usage pattern.

The number of backup folders just accumulates over time. It should be limited to the number specified in the "Incremental backups" field. Otherwise, what's that field doing? If I specify 3 incremental backups, I expect the number of backup folders to be exactly ≤ 3, not an ever increasing number of items. I think I have nearly 100 folders generated by backuplist+ now. Manually deleting them is not an option to me, especially not since the backups are incremental (no chance of knowing what folders are safe to delete).

Nice one to do a simple one-time backup. But unreliable if running as a cron job. Crashed many time on 10.9.2 filling up the backupdrive with several incomplete backups. Need to control itself better in case of a crash and complete backups or delete incomplete backup.

Folder explosion! I have the setting "Dated folder" turned on, and "Incremental backups" set to 3, but for some reason backupList+ generates backup folders ending in a large 6 digit number — not 1,2,3 as claimed in the app documentation. Ex: "backup(2014_02_15_111215)" Also, it doesn't clean up older backup folders but just keeps generating an ever increasing list of them.

How do I copy files and folders inside a folder? I want to copy everything inside /Users/user/folder1 to /Volumes/share/backup/ Right now folder1 is copied to backup. It works if I mark everything inside folder 1 but this is not a solution sins the content will change. Do I have to rename folder1 to backup to get it to work? and set the bakup folder to /Volumes/share ?

I really want to like this application. The developer has the right idea and I think it's potentially the best backup option for Mac OS X, however it desperately needs to support ssh differential transfers / backups. If it could just allow a clear setup vs feeding it an advanced command line, it would be gold. Further, being able to interpret the backup state of this ssh transfer visually would be a plus. It can be done, but would require a little extra setup on probably an additional interface tab. Rob, can we have this added?

Carbon Copy Cloner also syncs files/folders between two drives. It also uses rsync but it uses a newer version of rsync - version 3.0.7. I do hopeBackuplist+ gets updated soon with a newer version of rsync.

I don't know if anyone else has had this issue or not but here it is. I am running MacOS 10.5.8 on a MacBook (Non Pro). My MacBook's hard drive is 160 gigabytes. I downloaded the program. I opened it and did everything right for setting up my backup I wanted to do. Backing up my entire computer's hard drive. I had set it so that it would make my external USB 2.0 hard drive (1 terabyte in size) bootable. After copying my hard drive to the Source File list, I clicked on "Backup". After about 6 1/2 hours later, the backup finished. Not sure why it took that long but that's another problem. After my backup was complete, I ejected my external hard drive and restarted my computer. My external drive mounted but was NOT visible on the desktop. It was nowhere to be found. The only way I knew it mounted was by opening Disk Utility. I could see the drive in there but NOT on my desktop. After looking around online, I found a program that makes invisible files, visible. I was then able to see my external drive along with everything else that was invisible. I then launched that program a second time and my external drive became invisible again. I then decided to re-format my external drive. After doing so, my external drive became visible, permanently. Does anyone have any clue as to what would cause this?? Please help!!

Backuplist+ is a great backup app. In my opinion, it's better than TimeMachine. It may not have Apple's elegant back-in-time motif, but it backs up and excludes folders and files that TM couldn't do. The best thing about Backuplist+ is the tech support. I had a couple of niggling issues, and the developer responded in a matter of hours - including producing two updates that specifically fixed my problems. That says it all!

This has great promise. It could be the king of the free back-up apps. But it's not. The first session went very well, as scheduled, everything copied, etc. The next time, it refused to run. It says "scanning" with a timer next to it and a progress bar that doesn't move. After two hours scanning, I tried to cancel. It said "canceling backup session," but the timer kept going and it never canceled. So I had to force quit. I deleted the contents of the folder that I was backing up to and it ran fine again. But then the next time it hung in exactly the same way. As if it can deal with backing up to the same place twice...

This is such a great backup utility. I really like the fact that you can resotre files without the program. Still, one thing that I would love to see in an updated versoin would be the abilty to backup the files as a .dmg, so it doesn't need to unpack to view the files. Otherwise, I love the speed of the backups, and the ease of use.

This is a rather impressive utility. It looks small, it is small, but it does a lot, and it does it very well. What really impressed me is how simple everthing is presented. It actually has the same functionality as Intego's backup, but is cheaper, and much easier to understand. I also like the backups it makes: no proprietary formats, just copies or universaly accessible compression. To have sets is also an obvious, but often overlooked feature. I have just a few things on my wishlist: 1. This one would make life easier: To be able to choose folders from other users to backup, requiring an administrator password ofcourse. If I choose another users' folder now, I get an error message. 2. This is a minor one: The compression formet is .gz, which is nothing bad, but I prefer .dmg's, because they can be read without unpacking them. They can also be encrypted, which may be a nice extra feature :) 3. This is a difficult one, but if implemented is great: Incremental backups with hardlinks to yesterday's backup. To explain what this is would require a long story, so I just give you this address. For unix geeks only!: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/#Incremental The effect is that you have a full backup everyday, but it only requires the diskspace of an incremental backup. Most of the functionality needed is already present in this app, because you need a rotating system and rsync, that's all. I implemented this in my own backupscripts at home, and if the developer can implement this in his great little interface, I would donate and kneel in front of him.
