Calls home to the Feds? WTH? Additional connectivity problems

I shifted from Sophos to this because of the ratings referred to by an earlier poster. Note that that comparison chart is *NOT* for Macs -- you need to dig deeper to find out the Mac info is just-inherited-4year-old info, not yet updated.

Little Snitch said a helper wanted to connect to redirect.gov1.com. Chased it down with Whatroute to a server shared with LAX, Moffet AFB and ??

I uninstalled it and all my secure connectivity problems went away.

Beware that when Webshield is enabled (default), Avast! forwards all your connections through a proxy of their own; Every site you connect to is therefore logged by them; Everytime you open the software, even when you install it, it connects and sends your infos to Google Analytics; It installs a browser plugin that also connects to Google Anaytics. It uses Curl (a system process) to send analytics info to their servers... In facts, it does many things a good malware shoud do. And if it was labelled as so, I would rate it a 5-Stars.

Get the latest AV detection comparison chart here:

http://securityspread.com/detection-rate-results/

I keep wondering if my AV is good enough, and every now and then check macupdate to see what users are recommending; but never know who or what to believe. Anyway, I came across this website and thought I'd share it with people that would like a more conclusive update and comparison between numerous AVs.

If you don't want web shields and just basic protection. Try Avira. It has good malware detection rates, but no shields.

Utilities like 1Password, Little Snitch and others don't like shields ;)

All was fine then my (formerlh lightning fast) IMAC began to slow...and slow...and slow. I can't find any discussion besides the company's "send us your data and we'll get back" promo. So much as I like the product and the way it works - it doesn't "work".
