I've tried a few antivirus apps on my Mac and Eset is by far the best choice. Unobtrusive, light on system resources, exceeds industry standard detection rates and no buggy issues at all that I have experienced. *Tip* Don't pay $60 for this, go to ebay and you can find a valid license between $10 and $20. I got a 2 user, 2 year license for $11.

I have installed BitDefender on my Mac mini (I bought the 1 year license) which I consider the best AntiVirus for Mac but spent three weeks using my girlfriend's MacBook Pro and she has installed Antivirus ESET Cyber Security (she bought the license Of 2 years). From what I've been able to test it is an excellent Antivirus. I did not notice any impact on the performance of the MacBook Pro. I still prefer BitDefender but maybe it's the custom to use it. But ESET Cyber Security seemed to me as good as BitDefender.

I am using ESET Cyber Security approximately 2 months and I love it! The application makes automatic updates and does not cause performance loss. Loving It! I bought the version without the Pro because currently I use the excellent Firewall called: Hands Off!

Detailed malware detection test results are regularly posted here for nearly 2 dozen products, free and paid: http://securityspread.com/detection-rate-results/ These are very detailed, showing EXACTLY by name for each malware/virus if it is detected or not, for each product, then products are ranked 95%, 85%, 75% etc based on detection rates. Historical results are maintained so you can compare over time, and you do see product results change with each test (done every month to every 3 months depending on whether there are any new reported malware in the field, and a sample can be obtained for testing). I've done a bit of research on the site and tester, to make sure it was not one of those 'sponsored' sites by a vendor that are made to appear as objective, neutral reviews. The fact that the product rankings change constantly AND that the results are very specific and listed in detail, further support that this site and the tester are very objective. In fact this is exactly the kind of site and test results, that vendors DON'T want you to see, even the ones that do well on the test (because no product is 100%). I am posting this to support the Mac Community. When we are all better informed when it comes to this important area of security in this day of cyber threats, we all benefit. Education and information is the best defense, (as with so many things in life). For example, if someone uses MacKeeper because they don't know better, then in some ways the community failed for not getting the word out. If after doing some research and being advised not to use MacKeeper, someone still chooses to do so, then you can't help that, but hopefully it wasn't because there wasn't information available. My aim is not to support or dissuade anyone about a particular product, you pick / use or don't use whatever product you want, and live with the consequences, just remember that your decision can effect others, by virtue of whether you are part of stopping the spread, or being a part of it. I highly recommend you don't just look at the current results, but look at the past ones as well. You WILL see trends, with some products consistently doing well and others not so much, and some moving up and down. Remember, an A/V product rests on two main things, the scanning engine AND the malware database. A great engine can be crippled if the database is not updated in a timely manner. Conversely, a vendor that does maintain a current database might still not be effective if the program itself is buggy. This site only ONLY addresses virus detection results, it does not in general make any conclusions or post results regarding performance, installation, support, UI, etc.

Ran on OS 10.6.8. Didn't find the spigot.A adware that was causing me problems, and hung all my browsers after a day and a half. Upon uninstalling I had to restart Finder, which was having problems figuring out what the default apps were for certain types of files (not a big deal, but no mention of this bug or caveat is provided. The interface is sleek, but un-Mac-like in that there are no application menu bar items, although there is an icon for the RH-side of the menu bar. Check out VirusBarrier, which did the trick for me. Minimum rating for Version 6.0.13.0 on account of not finding the infection (yes, I updated definitions before doing scans), while another AV product could, and because of the browser-hanging issue -- that's purdee much a deal breaker in my book.

This runs quietly in the background, using very few system resources. Probably the lightest of all the Mac antivirus solutions on the market. I don't run this as a necessity but rather as an extra layer of security (think Flashback Trojan). Eset Nod32 antivirus on the PC is my favorite solution for Windows and they have done an excellent job on the Mac. By the way you can get this for $20 at Amazon. Never buy direct.

I've had use it for two years but I found that is not much valuable SW. Manual says that it is for 64bit, but inside is 64bit only kernel extension, other daemons (esets_ctl, 2x esets_daemon, ESET NOD32 Antivirus – GUI app) run in 32bit mode - shame on you. Eset cannot create 64bit application for OS X?

I forgot to give my rating in my previous comment and you can download this trial version and buy this on Amazon for $18, far cheaper than $39 if you buy it directly from ESET.

This has actually been renamed ESET Cybersecurity. If you're going to have antivirus protection, nothing beats ESET, not even intego.

Um, this isn't freeware at all. It's a trial download and then costs around 40 dollars a year with some price breaks for multiple years and computers, etc. I think I'll use CommonSense® technology and stick with ClamXav which is donationware. Plus.. who's that creepy guy staring at me with googly eyes next to their logo? Is that my protector or who I should be protected from?

If you really want to have antivirus on Mac, at least go for solutions detecting Mac specific threats, not some Cocoa looking Windows virus scanner. Windows viruses are way beyond detecting offline without heuristics.

Fun fact: NOD stands for "Nemocnice na Okraji Disku", Czech for "Hospital at the End of the Disk". It's a pun on the name of a drama shown on TV there, "Nemocnice na Okraji Mĕsta", meaning "Hospital at the End of the City".

Hilarious. These vampires are trying to get their fingers into the Mac now. Common sense will keep you virus free on the Mac, as long as you have a good virus solution on your Windows machine plus the aforementioned common sense, that should be enough. Think about it. What happens to the Anti-Virus companies when an OS comes along that is resistant to them ? They go out of business. It's in their best interests to KEEP virus's out there. It's all a giant game. The Trojan & Bot writers want your money, the Anti-Virus companies want your money and Microsoft will not create an OS that is more secure for fear of alienating those billion dollar companies.
