Project management software (was Merlin).

Overview

Merlin Project is the leading professional project management software for OS X.

If you plan complex projects on your Mac, you won’t get far with a simple list of tasks. Good planning raises questions about the dependencies of activities on each other, the impact of delays on the project completion date, and budget planning.

These are precisely the answers Merlin Project provides for your projects - with just a few mouse clicks. Download now our free demo version and test Merlin Project on OS X for full 30 days.

What's new in Merlin Project

Version 6.4.0:
  • Improved general stability.
  • Checklist items could not be reordered by dragging.
  • Table cells did not show some Arabic texts.
  • When using displays with 10-bit color depth, resizing a window was very slow.
  • Sometimes, repeatedly publishing the same Gantt view did not include recent changes.
  • When entering work on activities with material resources, a wrong error message could appear.
  • In detail views, time-phase boxes could show wrong values after having changed the timescale unit.

There is only a subscription model only for Merlin. The charge of $149 is annualy! There should be a remark if the price tag applies to a subscription.
This is also true for many other apps on macupdate and this a general nuisance.

I moved to Merlin Project 5 from version 4 and I love it. The new Kanban features is awesome. But for me the resources pool is the big thing. I think that a subscription is absolutely justified for such a software. Many people here don't seem to understand that the developers of a software can't live if you put a great app on the market and then have to support users with updates for years for free.

The best project management app on the Mac, period. And less expensive than the very overpriced Omniplan. Omniplan has only a couple of advantages, like the bidirectional communication between Apple Calendar and Omniplan ( Merlin is only monodirectional, from Merlin to Calendar but changes in Calendar won't reflect in Merlin )
While Merlin's Mac version is top-notch , it's iOS companion is a bit underwhelming for the price ( 40 $ a year ), and only allows for minor changes and perspective. Very limited usefulness, don't expect much from it.
Omniplan's iOS app on the other hand is impressive, nearly identical to the Mac version , but comes at a very hefty price ( 150$ ! )

Bottom line : on the Mac, Merlin wins hands down, but really needs a better, more powerful iOS companion

Merlin 2 user, upgraded to Sierra—now can't open the program until I pay an additional $185. The new features don't justify pulling the rug out like this from people who simply upgraded their OS. This is disgusting. The program already worked (well). This feels like typical upgrade cash cow bloat, with a bit of extortion thrown in for good measure.

Hi, I've used this software (Merlin 2) for a planning a big 6 months project preparation for 6 people. The huge advantage i've mentioned are:
1. you can see duration in weeks on Gannts Diagram (it sounds stupid, but it really helps to identify terms of task) and you can not see this feature in another applications.
2. If you have overloaded person in your plan you can manage his\her time on separate sheet and see how the duration of task will be changed. It saves a lot of time.
3. Movement over the whole 1200 strings plan was wonderfull ans so fast.
In comparisson with Microsoft MS Project i did a plan 3 times faster, really. To hide from my boss that i used another application - i've used export to MS Project file. It works really.

I was used to the former 2.x version and it took me a while getting the new options after the upgrade. Now that I got on track with it, it works perfectly for me. Sure it offers more than I would need on everyday work, but it imports fine from MS Project 2013 (older version couldn't), I can easily plan my tasks and check different views if I need them, or simply report by a report view. Small little things like search and replace, filters with or without hierarchy, the option to output the schedule with Spanish headers if I need and now rich style export of rows with time boxes helps me do my job as PM exactly as I need it and helps me to know that the software will help me, if I need more.

A thought for those who look at the cost of their software. Merlin seems to be a good projects program. I have owned a copy for several years since buying a copy in a NovaMind bundle. My current version of Merlin is 2.9.4. That said, after looking closely at the new program and the associated pricing, It appears Merlin management is discriminating against those who use US dollars to buy their software. The current difference between the Euro price and US dollar price at the current exchange rate makes the dollar price to buy new approximately $59.00 higher than the Euro price and the upgrade price approximately $25.00 higher. I like their program but this type of discrimination caused me pause and to decide against upgrading unless this changes. I did write Merlin customer service about this issue and was told my concerns had been passed to management. However, to date, I have not received an answer or explanation. You may want to consider Merlin is good but there are other options.

Really looks quite nice. If integration with TeamworkPM.net were possible, this would be a fantastic solution. Teamwork has proven to be the best comprehensive solution we've found so far for disparate teams, but man I would die to have a native OS X solution that could integrate into our workflow.

I use Merlin since years. There a mayor updates to fix problems or open new interfaces to third parties. The support is much better than average in the IT-area. Other companies tried to copy Merlin or introduced "Pad"-Version (more as a viewer or not stable) but Merlin is still the dominating Mac-PM software for Pro's.

A bit too expensive, and very seldom get updated. would be nice a bit more updates /features for a software that costs 200$. i switched to Fast Track due to this as merlin felt "old" after 2 years and basically no updates except 1 small fix.

I'm not going to review or rate Merlin because I haven't used it in many years (I think 2006 was the last time I used it). At the time, there really wasn't a project management app for the Mac that had all the features I needed, so I ended up going with MS Project running on Windows in Virtual PC. It was barbaric, but it worked. As I was trying all the different Mac PM apps, I came across Merlin. The interface was terrific, the software was intuitive, and the support was great…no wait, it was better than that. The support was awesome. The only reason I didn't end up using Merlin as my main PM app was because at that time it didn't have resource leveling, which was an absolute requirement for me. (In checking the current user guide, I see that resource leveling is now included in Merlin.) But even without resource leveling, Merlin was so easy to use and created such great looking graphics that I used it for my project status reports. And now that it has resource leveling, if I needed a PM app, I'd use Merlin in a heartbeat based on my earlier experience.

I am a project manager by trade working in the Netherlands on a 150 person project for a phone company. I run a low spec Apple Macbook with Merlin Project on it. I've been using Merlin for 10 months now on this project. My teams plan has 532 Activities. I update this on a daily basis as per progress. There are no stability problems that I can see and even annoying usability bugs have now gone. The layout and presentation are the envy of my fellow MSproject users. I have to export from Merlin to them every week also. This is easy - just 'export' instead of 'save'. no complaints. The overall project plan is larger at 662 activities. It was created in MSproject and imported into Merlin. This is done by double clicking the project file on the my mac and then merlin and the project open. Easy. Overall, I think Merlin is not bad value for money. If you love Mac and are running a project, then you have to have a planning tool. This looks good and runs stable. I've not had any corrupt project files or crashes. Check out the price of MS Project... €400-500 and it looks shabby. Sure you can buy cheaper Mac planners... but how much is your time worth to sweat with something that is not smooth?

This is definitely the best project management software on the mac. Especially if you work in a windows environment where MS Project is used this is a way to stay on the Mac. Exchange with Project runs quite smooth in most cases. The Software ist relatively easy to use and is very well integrated with MacOS X. And the price tag is low in comparison to many other software. Still waiting for a network version but there will one ion the next months as the developers have mentioned in the past.

I have a question about Merlin. My keyword while searching for the perfect project management tool is *collaboration*. Therefore I'm wondering how suitable Merlin is for projects where one person is in Sweden and the other one is in USA. In particular, I'm interested in smooth, working 2-way editing and management of the same project. Any information and user experience in this matter would be much appreciated.

Out of all the project management apps I've tried, this one SEEMS to be among the top few in terms of interface and stability -- but I'm not totally sure due to the item/tasks limitation of the demo. Why can't any of the project management software developers realize what we need to properly evaluate their product in a real working environment? A limit of "20 items" is a huge barrier when you're trying to determine if a product will really fit into the way your business works. Even the templates included with the software won't load completely due to the limitation! Trying to imagine if it will work for me makes it much harder to fork over $200 of my company's money. The Gantt layout is nice and less buggy than the other software I've tried. The Netplan view looks interesting, but again with the limited items, it's hard to see how useful it'd be for me. The only major thing that I'm able to gleem as a place for improvement is that the assets that you attach to items (docs, notes, etc.) feels a little buried and they aren't readily accessible in all views. It also continually switches view modes when you add an asset, which is somewhat annoying. Seemingly good interface, features and stability, but until I can actually TRY it in a real-world scenario, I really can't say if it's worth the price.

This version 1.1, bringing the various calendars, definitely makes Merlin mature and fully usable. I now use it as a full replacement to VirtualPC+MSProject (I know *all* MSProject features are not there, but I personnaly don't miss anything), and MPP file import works fine for me. The interface is great, and easy to use. The developpers have been very responsive to my requests and comments ... and no crash so far. Regarding the (minor) English errors on their site, please remember that US is not all word, so please be forgiving.

I have been in the market for a good project management ap for a while. Since I have been MS free since 2003, there aren't many options. Merlin looked interesting. It seems to be moving in the right direction, BUT... The website is very poorly translated from German and is almost unintelligible. It is almost funny it is so bad. (Of course they did better than I could if I tried to make a website in German...) The application seemed pretty nice when I downloaded it with a good layout and design. I noticed the templates were pretty lacking, but that will improve... it wasn't clear that you don't need to use a template and can just continue setting up a project. There are several items in the project entry wizard that should be options, but are currently required. Everything looked good until I tried to finish setting up a project... Beachball! Merlin is listed as a 1.0 app. I would put it more in the 0.75 area. It needs a bunch of stability work and the inclusion of some standard interface elements. The documentation needs a bunch of work and the website needs to be translated properly. With that all said, I am keeping my eye on Merlin. I think there may be some magic from this one...

Downloaded Merlin and it looks great. It is lacking a little in the template arena but that is a minor issue. Very user friendly and feature rich. My big gripe is that the demo only allows for 20 activites. I can't adequately test a business product unless I can do a sample plan which takes more than 20 activites and I am not willing to fork out the money for it until I know it can do what I want. MS Project import will be nice too which I guess is coming soon.

Version 1.0.1 is available! While starting Merlin from inside a mounted disk image, we had a problem with the locking of the project templates. This is solved now! It is now possible to test Merlin directly from the disk image. The mixture of English and German in the "New Project Assistant" is solved, too. As well, we have fixed some other minor issues. So, please give Merlin another chance ;-) BTW: If you find issues in Merlin, the web site or the documentation we are really appreciate your help by sending us a short mail to merlin@projectwizards.net

Seems... buggy. The buttons are mixed between English and German... it seems a bit unfinished... a little more polishing would help. The main window looks pretty nice, but I am unable to actually create anything! I try to create a new project, and the dialog comes up, but I can't type anythign in any of the boxes. Which makes it fairly useless at first... perhaps a couple more revisions and testing (may want to have some QA by someone with English as a first language). I really think the pictures in the manual look good... so if it can become like those and work it looks pretty promising... OS X needs some apps that compete (strongly) vs. MS Project.
