MacSOUP is an offline reader for Macintosh. It handles news and mail (but it can optionally interface to Eudora or Claris Emailer, if you prefer to use that for all your mail). It works either with a Unix shell account (in conjunction with uqwk), or with a TCP/IP connection.
What's New
Version 2.8.3:
  • Worked around a possible crash on startup with certain kinds of Address Book corruption.
  • With very large Address Books, typing in the address fields of an email editor window was very sluggish.
  • The Services menu now works in Snow Leopard.
  • MacSOUP's scripting dictionary can be opened again with the AppleScript editor in Leopard.
  • Minor fixes.
Requirements
PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

"You haven't set your location in the Map control panel. MacSoup won't let you send messages until you do blablabla..."
WTF?

The best newsreader in the universe got the first update after two years. MacSOUP is still the best choice for reading, collecting and following news articles on a Mac. Even under Windows I found nothing close.

Bought this year's ago under the Mac OS (pre-X). The selling point is the handling of message threads (excellent visual representation) and the ability to read off-line. I also like the way that you can reformat messages easily (command-R).

Under OS X, it's looking a bit dated to me, both in appearance and function. It's ready for a revamp. But still solid under OS X 10.4.5.

Sorry, but I think this one of the most terrible apps I used on osx until now:

1. It's not intuitive at al. And so are the menu-entries. Why do I have to do so many different steps in so many different menu-entries? Why not everything in one go? Choose the newsserver, get groups, subscribe alltogether?

2. The user-interface is so ugly.

3. It doesn't work exactly as described in the manual. After I managed to get the news I could'nt open them. They were in the list, but I were not able to read them (besides, what's this crap with "enter" / "space"? If I wanted to be bound to keys I could've been using the terminal...

This is a decent program, but, come on, isn't it time to update the description? Claris Emailer? That's been dead for years... Open Transport? Is this a time warp?

That has got to be the most ignorant comment posted here at macupdate in quite some time. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. MacSOUP is a state of the art newsreader..no one even comes near it!
