Why does this encryption application phone home??? Little Snitch warns: "Crypt2 wants to connect to dsl001-148-109.sfo1.dsl.speakeasy.net on TCP port 80 (http)" each time a file or folder is dragged to the Crypt2 icon. You wouldn't know this was happening without Little Snitch. Email to the developer requesting an explanation went unanswered. For a security app to phone home and not alert the user is unacceptable.

The new free version which is available at http://voluntary.net/crypt seems to have problems with folders. Hopefully this can be fixed...

Due to the recent revelations regarding the human rights privacy violations of the NSA, I am making this application free and will likely be open sourcing it when I have time. I hope you find it useful. REQUIRES OSX 10.8 OR LATER. A simple app for encrypting and decrypting files and folders. So, the developer made it available for free. Very sympathetic!

Crashes when starting. At least, on 10.6.8. Back to the previous version.

To anyone not familiar with this dev, search MacUpdate for SoundConverter, his infamous app. I give the star ratings so that I'll be allowed to post this. Otherwise, my suggestion is to stay away from this dev!

Is your source available for inspection? Sigh. I may have to add this remark to every crypto utility.

After testing Crypt2 here's my evaluation. While it can handle small simplistic jobs, it cannot handle encrypting/decrypting a large disk image (yes I know the .dmg also has encryption, but I wanted to ad another layer of encryption to the .dmg by using Crypt2. Unfortunately Crypt2 is not up to the task).

Nice little app, does the job. I can't really find anything negative about it, some other programs have some more advanced features but I use this one because it does the job quickly and without any hassle. One suggestion I have would be to make this donation-ware, simply because there are open-source & free utilities (bcrypt) that do the same thing, in fact, it would not be difficult to write an Applescript in conjuction with these free command line tools could do what this app does. That said, $5 is not an unreasonable price and Crypt2 is probably worth it for the ease of mind of having important files encrypted. Some other nice points are being able to drag'n'drop an encrypted or unencrypted file to Crypt2's dock icon, and that it puts the encrypted file in the same directory as the unencrypted file. For the developer: Is Crypt2 compatible with other blowfish encryption/decryption programs? Obviously I can't expect for you to have tried every one of them out there, but I was just wondering if there are any oddities with Crypt2 that are different from other blowfish encryption schemes.

Adding to my previous "review": Not allowing directories to be encrypted unless you pay is a very poor move, IMO, given that the core of this program (the encryption scheme) was not developed by this developer and Crypt2 really has no features over the opensource blowfish encryption program except for a GUI. Additionally, the user can't drag and drop more than one file at a time, which is annoying if you have to retype the password in over-and-over. 2 stars.
