I learned video editing in Final Cut Pro 7 and I hated Final Cut Pro X for quite awhile–it was too much like iMovie on steroids for my liking–but it's grown in my esteem since then. Light years better than Adobe Premiere Pro (and also cheaper in that you might be paying thirty or forty dollars for your Adobe subscription, but if you want to access those files you have to keep paying. And paying, making Final Cut Pro X a genuine bargain). It's a great application and like most Apple software, way more intuitive than it has any right to be.

Cannot recommend FCPX: the UI is cluttered, obtuse, and slow. Media management is cumbersome, and even the most basic adjustments use OS9-like controls. Yesterday I (very sadly) removed FCPX and Motion from my computer. Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve offers much better design, interface, control, media management, and speed. Apple has given little love or support to professional users in this, and many other 'Pro' apps. I didn't abandon Apple – they abandoned me.

works like a charm on my 4GB 11" Macbook Air. Software like it should be, no bullshit, complicated workarounds, unnecessary learning curves, lets you focus on your creative stuff, not to waste time finding ways to perform simple operations.

The best NLE so far and with many reasons. Fast to edit, huge for organising media, fast to render and share (export), no headaches when it crashes, awesome multicam features, etc, etc. I realised some facts a while ago… Who says that FCPX is a bad NLE are always those who really never tried it.

Despite all the angry people about how Apple jumped from Final Cut Pro 7 to X, this is great software. Sometimes you have to destroy what you have to create something really good… even Microsoft learned it after so much compatibility layers over the years. Was it hard for me to change from FCP 7 to X? Yes, it was hard and a leap of faith, but I it paying out. I do recommend this editor to everyone, prosumer or professional.

A quick comment to Macupdate… it seems that with all the updates made on version 10, the star rating for 10 doesn't reflect all the improvements done on FCPX. Is there anyway to break it out so that the rating system better reflects all the improvements that have been taking place?

What as difference a year makes. The performance issues I endured and 3rd party plugin problems appear to be resolved in this update. No need to even use background rendering as I can preview my work while editing. It took me a long while to wrap my head around this software but I'm sure glad I stayed with it. FCP X is very powerful after 8 updates in a little over a year, but there is a learning curve so if you don't know it well, get to know it with some video or book tutorials. It's worth it. Glad I never switched to Premiere.

Perhaps Apple should insource development work on Final Cut Pro X if Wipro (Apple's choice of offshore company for "can't be bothered" dev work) can't get this right? Don

Apple has built a completely new and faster digital video editing package. While some users are still worried about the changes it brings, I predict they'll eventually be won over by Final Cut Pro X's significant speed and usability advances. FCX is fun to work with! Yes it can not import projects from previous Final Cut versions natively but there are several third-party plugin that can do the job nicely. Try to dig into this huge video editing package and feel the power.

So This is supposed to be the cream of the Video Editing, a PRO app, not even close. But now I know why Apple made iMovie quality worse and worse in each iteration. So they want to sell iMovie Pro with a more fancy price of 300$. This tells a lot about the trust we can receive from Apple, don't think I will invest lot more time and study in Apple products. Thank God We Have Adobe, otherwise I would have a very expensive paper weight!

Final Cut Pro X was a bit of a shock for some long term users of Final Cut. Given Apple's policy of keeping quiet on their plans and motives, it is understandable that many people were confused by the direction that FCP is taking. Poor communication aside, Apple have created a great video editing application in FCPX. It's not perfect and it's not even ready as a replacement in my opinion. But, it is getting there. I'd rather have this completely rewritten version sooner than later, even if it means some missing features. I can fully understand that keeping up with new systems (hardware and OS's) sometimes requires a company to make the tough decision to rewrite a popular app from the ground up. This latest point release of FCPX has added back some of the missing functionality. With a little patience, I think we will see Final Cut Pro X and later becoming a firm professional favourite for video editing again. As for software developers changing directions and doing what they like? Well, there is no large corporation out there likely to please everyone all the time. Ironically, it was Apple's desire to make this product future-proof that has made some people assume that they are not interested in its future development.

I won't repeat what so many others have said about this new release, just point out something to those people who want to give a pass to Apple for this debacle. As a long-time (11 years) user of FCP, the reality is that Apple have showed users who rely on their product that they are not worthy of such trust. You see - even if Apple restored EVERY SINGLE ONE of the missing features from FCP7 tomorrow, the stark reality is that you now know that Apple is capable of doing this to you again, 2 years, 3 years, or 5 years down the track. So you cannot rely on them anymore, it is as simple as that. It is no longer about FCP, it is about APPLE and how they act as a company. They can release as many damage control faqs as they like - but the truth is they blew it in respect of how anybody will view ANY of their products as a long-term productivity companion that can be trusted to be an investment worth making. I said to a friend, this is something like coming home and finding your wife in bed with another man. It just won't ever be the same again. I've already started looking at Premiere Pro - apparently that can import FCP7 projects and even map the keyboard like FCP. That makes it more FCP than FCPX in my view; how ironic. FYI, I know 6 different editing apps including Avid and Quantel, have 20+ years editing experience (mainly broadcast), have worked on just about anything you can imagine, and own mostly Macs. I even was an Apple II user in the early 80s. I consider this the worst mistake Apple have ever made. It tells you all you need to know about whether or not to rely on them. Use this software at your peril - there are many other companies out there that will never do to you what Apple did to a large proportion of their most loyal userbase a month ago.

FCP is no more in this re-imagining of what non-linear editing should be. This is a solid enough entry into prosumerism, and perhaps the "pro" in FCPX stands for prosumer, and not professional. That said, it has to be compared to FCP 7, the last professional entry into the series. And it doesn't compare. Now many would think that this is just Apple making things better and some naysayers don't want to embrace the "new way". That couldn't be farther from the truth, in fact the new way of editing isn't all that bad and could well be adjusted to - it's the lack of features, the non-compatibility with previous FCP versions, the secret timeline, the immediate cutting of FCP 7, the way of distributing this for enterprises and the way it organizes itself in the familiar way of iPhoto, i.e. makes as much invisible in the file system for users as is possible. There's a reason for why upon opening FCPX that it asks whether you want to import your iMovie projects. Because it's a consumer application. It is priced accordingly.

Calling this "Final Cut Pro" was Apple's biggest mistake. If they had just called it Final Cut X or iMovie Plus or whatever, it would be a fine addition to their software line. This is NOT in any way a replacement for Final Cut Pro. The feature set, tools and functionality are innovative and impressive, but completely inadequate for the same level of use as FCP 7. This software is an enthusiast and "prosumer" tool at best, and is really nothing more the next evolutionary step of iMovie. Calling it Final cut "Pro" is a huge step backward and a slap in the face to all those devoted users and fans of FCP. This is not "Final Cut Pro" but a sheep in wolfs clothing.

I have usually been a total supporter of Apple's products. And being a user of Final Cut Pro, I was originally excited when I heard that Apple was finally releasing an update with 64-bit processing support, but this version is sadly one of the worst update releases I have ever seen, no way of importing older final cut pro projects? no tabbed timeline? This is not the Final Cut Pro that Apple was know for this is a iMovie with a fancy patch and limited capabilities. I'm sticking with Final Cut Pro 7 in 32-bit until they get it fixed.

Simplistic and naive replacement for a very advanced suite. In a word, this review says: iMovie Pro. (using "pro" like in PaintShopPro) Honestly, it doesn't replace FCP7 and it being a "version 1.0" is no excuse. Until this is a true replacement to FCP7, I can't recommend it. That it is App Store only is also a negative.

OK... This is clearly an amazing product that isn't ready for primetime. I realize this is a 1.0 release, so I'll give them time to add the needed features in order to be a 'pro' app. As of now, it certainly isn't. UI is fantastic, speed is blazing... but the core functionality that pros use daily isn't just lacking, they aren't there at all. Things that FCP X needs before it can be considered 'pro': 1) Support for 3rd party video cards 2) SDI/HDSDI input/output 3) XML import/export 4) OMF import/export 5) EDL import/export 6) Ability to set the timeline start code to anything else but 0:00:00 7) The ability to keyframe effects 8) Edit to Tape functionality 9) Native REDcam functionality Things I'd love to see: 1) iChat Theater abilities 2) AAF import/export

Can anybody tell how can I export in FCP 4 using separate audio tracks. Ex. Audio 1 for voice over, Audio 2 for music and sound effects.

Ive been using FCP3 for 2 years, over 20 Full length movies & full feature DVD's (DVDSP 1.5) & its been ROCK SOLID! I have several nominations and One "BEST DVD OF THE YEAR" award - AVN Awards... so, I know what I'm doing & I have to be productive with tight deadlines... 'nuff said on that. Heres the deal I found with FCP4/HD... Upgraded to FCP4/HD on a second G4 *(Not primary machine) then attempted to "re-do" and entire project from capture to Final DVD using FCP4/HD to see if there would be any problems. Well... first off, I cant capture anything at length in FCP4... all tapes capture perfect in 3, out of 18 tapes, I could capture ONE in its entirety, the rest would not go... after an entire day, I moved on. NEXT UP...No Rendering previews like FCP3... RT... real time? thats nice for 1-2 layers of video with basic transitions & FX, but try 6 video layers & 5 stereo audio tracks... there is NO real time anything... you must render... & there is NO DRAFT render, so you have to WAIT!!! even on a G5... a little faster, but why take away the draft render mode? thats just LAME! NEXT up... export as a Final Cut PRo Movie is gone, QT movie is not the same... what gives.. BIG problem for me as I do a "rough" edit first, then export Video & Audio seperate, Clean the audio up, then import back into FCP for "final" edit... major problem there. NEXT UP... cant view timeline on an external TV (Via Sony DV deck)... OK, so maybe I dont have it set up right, BUT, I can capture from the deck (sort of!)... FCP4 see's the deck, but no video... Tried all setting variations... no go. FCP3 shows video via firewire external all the time, no special set up required... another BIG problem. NEXT UP... track selection... cant figure out all the little "bullets" to the far left that make "pairs" & stuff... is a track selected or not for copy or paste? FCP3 was very cleqar & simple. So, why so many drastic functionality changes??? Why not just ADD the killer NEW features to a SOLID FCP3 base???? that would have been super cool! Now FCP4 is all F***ed up! So,bottom line for me. STAY WITH FCP3!!! Its not worth the hassle!!!

Those of you angry that you can't convert the songs you buy from the iTunes music store to mp3 to save disk space or use them in your home FinalCut movies should get Hear Your Music Anywhere 0.6. This free app converts the m4p songs that you buy to m4a format. With this app the digital hub lives on !!

Very bad! I always heard never upgrade in the middle of projects so I waited until I was finished. I upgraded and now when I export to quick time for DVD's I'm missing whole audio tracks. I'm pretty sure it's FCP HD because I had exported the project daily and burned dvd's as I was working on it just to see my progress. I don't know why apple would release this upgrade with such a huge bug in it!

Wish I NEVER upgraded to 4.5HD I cannnot capture footage and I can't see the video in the capture preview window. If it starts to capture it quits because it is dropping frames or else the whole program just quits on me. Don't upgrade until the problems are fixed or you will end up like me with projects half finished!

I'm having problems with FCP4.1 The programm is not friendly at all. Books are not solution. Making a chroma key is a pain. The other issue is when you close the windows. like time-line window etcetc, you cannot reopen it.You have to restart it. Play back audio in time-line does not work either. Need to be rendered. It has bugs a lot. At least give me solutions and leave my posting displayed. It should be considered to rename certain things like "Viewer" or Canvas"and bla bla bla. why not to name them "preview" and Outgoing video. A real video tape field language. This program

I am working on a dual 1.42 Gig G4. I started with ver. 4.0, and had a LOT of hiccups, especially print to tape. I then updated to 4.1 and voila! Problem solved! I am very happy. I still get the occasional crash, but having saved every 10 mins, it's no bother, and FCP starts up so quickly again... Satisfied customer!

after using vers 2, 3, and now 4 of fcp, i've come to the conclusion that this software might as well have an MS BloatWare® sticker slapped on it.. going back to Premiere *shudder*

Bad Apple! Bad!! I have FCP version 3 and i was thinking on updating to FCP 4 so i decided to check with some persons that already bought it. guess what?? FCP 4.0 can import from a mini-dv tape with multiple timecode breaks just fine. It has an option of creating new clips after the break. But somehow this update (4.0.2) makes this option stop working!!! So know I'll wait to see if (when) Apple corrects this bug and only then i 'll decide if it's a good idea to update or not.

Con tiki, have you moved the apps from their default location? I did (I put all the "loose" apps into a folder called "Final Cut Pro 4"), and Software Update wouldn't show that I needed the update. When I took all the individual apps out of the folder and put them back into their default location (/Applications for most of them, /Applications/Utilities for a couple), Software Update recognized I needed the update.

The FCP 4.0.1 Updater does not appear on my Software Update Panel. I have downloaded the Pro Application Support Package, but that doesn't seem to help, either. Any suggestions?

I cannot find the Pro Application Support Package that one must install before the Upgrade to FCP 4.01. It does not come up on the Software Update Screen.

Perhaps if you both took a further look at Anonymous' comment, you would see when it was posted and what the version of FCP was at the time of the comment. If you want to poke fun at people's mistakes you might first want to ensure that you aren't the one who's mistaken.

Hey anonymous, why don't you check out the requirements? You need FCP 4, not 3.

This updater doesn't work. I have a correctly installed and fully registered copy of Final Cut Pro 3.0 but the updater stalls and gives me a message that my copy is not correctly registered. Re-installing FCP 3.0 doesn't help.
