Thin it's not. After uncompressing the archive, Kate occupies 336.3 MB on disk. Contrast that with TextEdit, which weighs in at a paltry 1.8 MB! Erberle weighs in at a mere 9.2 MB. On the other hand, Atom (now defunct) weighed in at a hefty 658.5 MB! And that's before adding extensions to it.
I'm going to give Kate a try, as I bounce between using vi in a terminal and TextEdit.

This is the best text editor I have used, and I've used many having been writing code for 35 years. Better than Visual Studio, jEdit, BBEdit, TextPad and less bloated than other IDEs. Every time I do a system update I look at new options and this one is fantastic - it has all the features you want from a modern editor, has plugins extra stuff you might need and runs on multiple platforms so you can keep using the same tool when working on a different OS. It has a nice text zoom feature missing from some editors. The port to macOS works well but you will have to adapt to the different key combinations and maybe add some extra user defined ones if you use some features like block mode editing. If running macOS on Apple silicon then avoid version 23 which doesn't behave well with Rosseta 2.
