Recompress overview

re/compress is a powerful PDF recompression utility which can decrease the size of your existing PDF files for archiving or sharing on the Web or via email. It analyzes the PDF file and determines which objects can be further compressed to save storage space.

By the various analysis and recovery steps performed by re/compress, it is often possible to recover many common types of issues, errors, or otherwise corrupted files. Saving corrected files with re/compress provides improved compatibility for more strict applications which lack such error-recovery measures.

Doesn't seem to work at all here on OS 10.9.5. A blank window briefly appears and then nothing! No compressed files anywhere and (luckily) the original file is untouched... There's not even a selectable destination pref!

I found Re-compress effective for what I needed after a bit of experimentation, especially using the settings of "Compress" (as distinct from "Highly compress"); the 6th notch on the slider; and 100 dpi. This reduced a 4.1 MB PDF to 1.5 MB. (The 6th notch was much better than the 4th, at a cost of only an additional 7% in file size.) Re-compress has rescued me, for only $10, from the file reduction feature in Adobe Acrobat that only works intermittently on my iMac, and the all too complicated steps using ColorSync Utility.app » Filter in MacOS.

That said, I experienced a bizarre outcome when I selected "High compression", 300 dpi and the slider three-quarters up the scale: my 4.1 MB file grew to 16.7 MB! Go figure...
