SoftRAID Lite overview

SoftRAID Lite is a replacement for Apple's Disk Utility RAID. SoftRAID Lite is based the full SoftRAID engine, with the only limitations being that SoftRAID Lite supports only RAID levels 0 (stripe) and 1 (Mirror) volumes, and does not have email notification or the command line interface. Tecchnical support for SoftRAID Lite is available on the SoftRAID forum.

SoftRAID Lite also provides "predictive disk failure", where users are alerted to potential disk failures even before they fail. SoftRAID Lite allows you to create and manage disk arrays to increase performance and reliability. SoftRAID's intuitive interface and powerful feature set make this utility a must-have for any OS X Server admin, "Pro" user, photographer, digital-video editor, or desktop user who wants more reliable backup for his computer.

What’s new in version 5.8.4

Updated on Nov 04 2020

Version 5.8.4:
New features:
  • Adds a feature which warns the user if Secure Boot is enabled. This warning appears when the SoftRAID application is first launched, Secure Boot is enable and a SoftRAID disk is attached.
  • Adds ability to sign up for the SoftRAID News email list.
  • Adds a work-around for a kernel panic bug which was introduced in macOS 10.15. This bug causes a kernel panic when an HFS+ volume is created on a 4Kn HDD (a disk with 4 KB sectors) which is housed in a USB 3 or USB 3.1 enclosure.
  • Adds support for OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual U2 enclosures to SoftRAID XT and SoftRAID Lite XT.
Bugs fixed:
  • Fixes a bug which could prevent the Mac from restarting after uninstalling SoftRAID.
  • Fixes a bug which caused the SoftRAID application to be relaunched after a restart when the user had just uninstalled SoftRAID.
  • Adds code to ensure that SSDs are always the primary disks in RAID 1+0 volumes which contain equal numbers of SSDs and HDDs. This code gets run when RAID 1+0 volumes are created and at the end of a RAID 1+0 volume rebuild.

****WARINING: LOSS OF DATA MAY RESULT FROM USING THIS PRODUCT WITH BIG SUR AND TIME MACHINE*** I was just informed by OWC Technical Support that SoftRaid currently does not support Time Machine when using their drivers to create a a Time Machine backup disk. This means that Time Machine backup drives using the SoftRaid drivers will no longer work properly, even if the RAID was previously working in Catalina and Time Machine will no longer properly accept (it freezes) a newly created RAID Array created with SoftRaid. Additionally, using Apple RAID Assist will eventually result in drive corruption of the drives unless the FIRMWARE of the RAIDed drives is identical. The bottom line to all of this is that the only way to reliably RAID drives in Big Sur is to use a hardware RAID solution.

Couldn't get it to work for me. First I tried converting my Apple raid 0, softraid did its thing but left my volume unmounted and try as I may I could not get it to mount. Second attempt, started from scratch and built a new Apple raid volume, tried the convert thing but sadly the result was the same, will not mount the volume. It's times like this that I'm glad there are free trials...

Stable and fast RAID 0 or RAID 1 software solution. It easily and quickly converted my old striped Apple volumes to SoftRAID stripes. Benchmarking the volumes before and after shows a noticeable increase in throughput with the SoftRAID drivers. This is a necessity for those with striped volumes using Apple drivers since Apple is no longer supporting RAID implementations under recent versions of Mac OS X.

I found this app to be a quick fifty bucks down the drain. Softraid's site says, "With SoftRAID Lite, you can convert your AppleRAID stripe or mirror volumes to SoftRAID. The process is simple and takes only a couple of minutes. You'll be able to continue to use your volumes and gain all of SoftRAID's disk testing and monitoring features." Really? Not on My MacBook Pro. Even after waiting for V5.5, I get the message: "Softraid cannot convert this volume because it shares disks with other volumes". Let me understand this. By definition, a RAID array uses multiple hard drives. Multiple hard drives means a lot of storage space. A lot of storage space means that many people will have the 'array' partitioned into more than one volume. But Softraid can't deal with hard drives partitioned into more than one volume, because each volume 'shares disks'? Huh? Remind me again why I bought this?
