I unsuccessfully tried to determine the cost of the app. It forced me to register and only revealed the price after telling me I get a 7 day trial. The actual cost is a one (life)time charge of $37. I find it hard to trust a developer who hides the price. Here is the screenshot: http://d.pr/i/11ybZ.

Yup. Not freeware. There are plenty of Pomodoro style tools available which have more straightforward pricing. Or, just combine a free menubar timer and a checklist--which is what Action Ally appears to have done..

Although MacUpdate is currently listing ActionAlly as "Free", which is inaccurate, the ActionAlly website itself is quite clear and forthcoming about the cost of the app. It says the the app can be downloaded for free (which is true, given that there is a free trial), and then further down it explains what the actual cost is. Compared to the common practice these days of selling apps on the Mac App Store without offering any free trial, I think the ActionAlly approach looks pretty good by comparison. That said, I still need to properly test out the app.
