Notebooks1.4.5

14 December 2018

Create documents, manage tasks, organize files, and sync with iOS.

Overview

Notebooks is the only notebook you ever need. It allows you to create as many books as you need to write, store and structure your details of life, and it will quickly become the one and only repository for all journals, ideas, notes, drafts and diaries but also for your projects, task lists, documents, files and everything else you want to keep close at hand.

Notebooks stores and displays almost any type of document: plain text and formatted text, PDF, web pages, MS Office or iWork documents, photos, videos, music and much more. Everything you would usually print out and file can now go directly into Notebooks, without adding bulk. Notebooks also keeps your task lists and allows you to tick off your to-dos as you complete them. Divide your projects into nested sub projects, which makes them easier to handle, and cross-reference into your reference library, which, of course, is in Notebooks, too. So whether you need to write something down or look something up, Notebooks is the place to go.

This application is fantastic for those who are trying to find a low-cost way to go paperless, manage files and for users who need better text editing in Mac.

Please add encrypted synchronisation to dropbox. You wouldn't let the dropbox guys read your diary. Neither do I want the dropbox staff read my notes! Im syncing to my own Nextcloud for now. It's not as convenient, as you have to sync manually every time you add new notes or make a change. Other than that this application really has it all! It's way more than just note taking. You can add to do lists with due dates, edit PDFs, make hand drawings, organise many different filetypes, add images and other filestypes to documents. Still the layout of the app is very intuitive and simple. Fantastic

Maybe when this gets to version 4 it might be safe to use. At the moment it is flaky and unreliable and definitely not wise to incorporate it into any serious or professional workflow. It does have potential though. I do wonder about four star reviews for something that clearly is not worth three. This is, at best, FLAKY. Still cost me nearly $30 Australian. I'll look at it again in 2020.

Fantastic app. I had been using the iOS version on my iPad and iPod Touch for quite a while. Having the same thing on my Mac is a great plus. This is pretty much the perfect balance of all the features I need to just dump everything I need to track into one application, but then I've mostly using MarkDown or plain text so I can view with any good editor. Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 - I've got an Android phone and am taking notes in text or Markdown, so any good Markdown editor that syncs with DropBox lets me view my notebook notes. But I cannot view my todo lists on other devices.

I have used this program for some time now and it's ability to sync has been very reliable and that is what I have been looking for. I have used SOHO Notes by Chronos from a very long time and found it to be a great program which gave me few problems over the years. It has been reliable and I have never lost not one piece of data over the years even with a library of data at 1,000 items plus. That said dealing with the C/S issues (or lack of C/S issues) have sometimes left me annoyed at the least. But over the last year or so updates have became fewer and fewer until they announced that they were discontinuing development and coming out with a new product to replace SOHO this year. As I said I've been a long time user and know from experience that this year to Chronos could equal years in everybody else's time. So I began the search for a replacement and found Notebooks to have great potential. Don't misunderstand Notebooks is not yet SOHO but it is on its way. I can't remember the last time I ran into a formate SOHO could not handle and Notebooks is doing great in this area so far. It does especially well when saving web pages, PDF's, etc. and it's convenient with all the ways to seamlessly add things to your collection without interfering with your workflow. Probably one of the best things of all is that Notebooks not only has an iOS version but it actually syncs consistently well. It syncs via dropbox, Webdave and others and according to it's web site iCloud sync is coming. Something SOHO has not been able to pull off. I really want my data off dropbox (nothing against dropbox or Evernote but privacy does have a value whether some see that now or not. Anyway this is a good app and I have almost transitioned completely to Notebooks without a hitch. I know many will point me to Devonthink and I own Dthink Office Pro but for me it is not as intuitive and I seem to spend more time fiddling with the program (trying to get it to do things) than gathering data to fill it.
