Angry IP Scanner

Fast and friendly network scanner.

Angry IP Scanner overview

Angry IP Scanner is an open-source and cross-platform network scanner designed to be fast and simple to use. It scans IP addresses and ports as well as has many other features. It can scan IP addresses in any range as well as any their ports. It is cross-platform and lightweight. Not requiring any installations, it can be freely copied and used anywhere. Angry IP scanner simply pings each IP address to check if it's alive, then optionally it is resolving its hostname, determines the MAC address, scans ports, etc.

App appears to be out of date to the point where it doesn't run on a Mac mini M1 running MacOS 11.6 aka Big Sur. I liked the idea of it, a shame.

For some reason launching it results in no windows on my Big Sur system. The application starts the launch but doesn’t complete it.

Yep; it worked as advertised. As long as I provide recognizable names to my various devices, it's easy to see which device has been assigned which IP. Nicely done. If there's anything "downside" to this app, it's the requirement for Java which, on many Macs (not mine), may not be installed; but I'm not going to ding it for that as Java is shown to be a requirement right up front.

The app V3.51 remembers window positions and 'fetchers' as MAC and vendor. In prefs you can exclude dead ports and configure lots of options… True, the app is not very polished, but apparently working well – for free

I generally just use Lanscan Pro, but figured I'd give this a test drive. The app does not remember window positions or sizes on quit, which is totally annoying. It refuses to collect all Hostnames unless they have been entered in to the local DNS. It fails to report MAC Addresses for 99% of devices on the network. It does have options that Lanscan Pro does not have, but without the ability to report basic information, the app is pretty much useless.

Great app. FYI, the version posted here is old. The latest version as of this review is 3.3.2 and works with JAVA 8 Update 25 (build 1.8.0_25-b17). It also works with OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite, and can be gotten on the app's web page here: http://angryip.org/download/#mac

What I like most is the possibility to configure it for my needs. The program is fast and works great with 10.9.2. A big thanks to the developers!
