CustomMenu 3

3.4.2
02 May 2019

Quickly access your favorite apps, files, and folders.

Overview

CustomMenu lets you build your own global menu to quickly access your favorite apps, files, and folders. Within your custom menu, you can:

  • simply click to open an app, file, or folder;
  • Cmd-click to show the app, file, or folder in the Finder;
  • easily browse and access hierarchical folder contents;
  • view file info (kind, size, created, modified, preview);
  • select the app to open a file; and
  • easily switch between running apps.

CustomMenu is always at your fingertips:

  • via the global menu
  • via customizable keyboard shortcut
  • at the current mouse location
  • even in full-screen mode

CustomMenu 3 is the successor of the classic CustomMenu, and has been completely rewritten to be even better. The new features are:

  • The new preview feature allows you to look at the contents of a file
  • A new submenu now lists the apps, files, and folders you have recently used
  • The Application Switcher can now hide other apps automatically
  • New option for developers to show hidden files and package contents
  • A modernized user interface
  • Several other improvements, new options, and minor bug fixes

Wow. Stumbled across this little gem. Does just what I've been looking for. Using it for a few hours now. No bugs so far. Well worth the price. Great job, developer.

I gave this application at first just 3 stars. See original review below. However, I happily can change this to 4 stars. After using CustomMenu for some time I find it almost as good as FinderPop was. What made the difference for me is the possibility to have a short cut to show CustomMenu, and I could configure my Logitech mouse to "type" this short cut when I press the wheel button - this makes it now easier to access the menu items. It still would be great if it would be possible that the menu pops up at the mouse cursor when right-clicking anywhere in Finder. Original review: This app has little more functionality than a folder with aliases in the dock. However, it works as described, and that is better than nothing. It could become a 5-star application if the custom menu would pop up at the mouse cursor when right-clicking anywhere in Finder (like a context-sensitive menu item) and/or when clicking anywhere in the empty parts of the menu bar (like FinderPop did). It would be really great if the developer could make that happen!

Does it only work as Menu Bar item? FinderPop and FolderGlance both work as CM items in the Finder - eg clicking on file on desktop brings up options for how to work with file/what to do etc. All the screen grabs suggest/show only Menu Bar list ? Two options in Mac Store here in Australia - CustomMenu and CustomMenu 3. AUD$13 for CM 3. What's the difference?

thanks to dev for replying to my query - CM3 only works as Menu Bar item, so on a big screen, a lot of mouse travel for every interaction with CM3. I still have Finder Pop working on Mojave (MB Air) and Folder Glance on Mojave (MB Pro), both are true CMs that work on file/folder/desktop click for response/action.

Another alternative running on Mojave is Accessible which is Menu Bar item, also allows customisation of menus and links.

I got CustomMenu 3 to replace old favorites MaxMenus and FinderPop on Mojave. I created a mouse gesture shortcut for it with MagicPrefs - a great time saver. The menus are very easy to create and access. Very nice app!

Minimalistic, no CPU footprint – just perfect ! Replaces FinderPop on Mac OS Mojave for me. Bought CustomMenu 3 immediately.

I like everything about Custom Menu 3, has filled a massive hole where FinderPop used to be, can customise it to suit, well worth every penny in time saving alone, excellent work.

Does what it says on the tin. I particularly like the options to customize the menubar icon, and to pop up the menu at the mouse cursor with a hotkey. I also like the Recent Items menu item, as it only tracks items recently accessed via CustomMenu. I wrote the dev asking if he could add an option to sort folders at the top when navigating through folders, like in the Finder in Sierra, and he says he added it to the list of features to add.

I wondering if web links and bookmarks will work with this app. No trail.

I just tested it, and yes they do (I dragged a website to my desktop to create a .webloc file, which I then added to CustomMenu).

Good in theory but flawed in practice. Keeps ‘losing’ track of the items in my menu.

Wolfgang (of PointWorks) has been very helpful allowing me to resolve the issues I have been having. As a consequence I would have to raise my rating to, probably 4.5

Can recommend FinderPop - its free, does more and has more features/greater flexibility/higher capacity. Have been using FP for years, dev is very responsive to feedback, ideas for features etc.

The key word is "global" here. The biggest advantage this app has over FP is that it can and does appear in all apps. on the FP forum the dev admits there is a problem with the Chrome Browser where FP won't show up without terminal commands. CustomMenu even shows up in Full Screen Mode Retina which is nice. That and is highly customizable without having the naming problems that FP has. But hey! You are free to use what ever app floats your boat. I'll stick with CustomMenu, thank you!

I don't think it's fair to give an app a one star rating just because you like another app better. To my mind one star ratings should be reserved for apps that don't work properly or work very poorly.

Please refrain from assigning scores to "reviews" that are not actually reviews of the app itself, but rather your opinion of pricing or how it compares to the competition. Reviews and ratings should be left by individuals who have actually used the title and have some insight to share about the app itself. Otherwise, please leave comments (to which this has been changed), or take advantage of the "Suggest Similar Software" feature. Thanks.
