I prefer the Franker (https://code.google.com/p/franker/) Safari extension. It's unobtrusive, I have it set up so it appears only in the contextual menu, no toolbar icons. You can choose to translate entire pages or just selected text (for when you need just a little help with a language you're learning). It can be configured to use either Google Translate or Microsoft Translator, and it's free.

"TranslateMe for Safari" is an ongoing rewrite of the older "Translate Safari Extension" to comply with the new Safari App Extension system in Safari 12. The eventual goal is to have feature parity with the older extension where possible.

Automatic Translation and the extensive Settings are not yet present in the new app. But it is available on the Mac App Store for easy instal on Safari 12!

For users upgrading from 2.x it is highly advised to backup your settings for import into a future release of "TranslateMe for Safari". Instructions are at http://sidetree.com/translateme.html

Hope that helps. Thank you.

Hello. I bought this application at the day of its release. As the developer mentions here, it lacks “Automatic Translation” and “Extensive Settings” the two main elements for me that are not actually available. I do hope they would be implemented in the future. To put it in a nut shell, this version is a simplified version compared to its previous release with less features available. Hope this helps. The new version 3.1 has restored some essential functions like having an option for selecting functions and being able to switch between Microsoft and Google translation services. Last but not least, it’s now possible to choose the destination language. Very good job, thank you.

Does not recognise the web language. Cuts the sentence and translate only a part. If your "translate to" language is other then English, to find a right language in the pop up Translator window is a real task. Sometimes does not pop up on certain text.

Safari displays this uninformative error when attempting to install a newer version of the extension obtained direct from the developers over a version obtained from the gallery. Easiest fix is to uninstall the extension before installing the version downloaded direct from sidetree. Feel free to write www.sidetree.com/contact if you need assistance with this. Thank you.

So you're plugging this other extension that does exactly the same thing as Translate. Brilliant.

Hi James! I'm a great supporter of Side Tree (especially for another of their great products: Hoverzoom), but here, there is a noteworthy difference in favour of Franker, i.e. Franker allows to translate only a word or a sentence, leaving the rest of the page untouched! It doesn't mean this extension is not good, it just doesn't do the same thing. ;-)

... BUT it needs to be said that Franker has not been updated since 2011... :-/

It seems it is not even available anymore. The download links 404 and their Twitter page says it is in Hibernate mode if someone wants to take it over.

Does a great job with great options but has one glaring flaw. I want the option to remove the Toolbar Icon entirely and just use the Contextual Menu instead. I have too make icons up there already I don't want. Otherwise, great Safari Extension!

Just an update: I was able to remove the Toolbar Icon with Safari's "Customize Toolbar" in the View Menu. I then dragged the icon out of the toolbar and it's gone now. :)

I add that Dorkypants'post is very welcome as Franker is not (yet?) on MU and I wouldn't have heard about it without his post. :-)
