TuneSpan for iTunes

1.4.1
12 September 2018

Effortless iTunes media library management.

Overview

TuneSpan allows you to browse and span the media in your iTunes Library. To span your media means to distribute the files in your iTunes Library across multiple drives.

What does TuneSpan do?
TuneSpan helps you easily move the media files (Music, Movies, etc.) in your iTunes Library to multiple drives, avoiding the pitfalls of moving files manually. TuneSpan lets you browse and keep track of media in your iTunes Library on all drives, whether they're connected or not, and makes it clear to you what is and isn't currently available to play in iTunes. TuneSpan also offers sophisticated filtering options that aren't available in iTunes.

What's new in TuneSpan for iTunes

Version 1.4.1:
Fixed:
  • Bug that would cause TuneSpan to stall if large folders or lots of folders were expanded in the Media Locations list
  • Bugs when displaying TV Show names and large episode numbers
  • Other minor bug fixes and improvements
  • Refresh Album Artwork" Tool for iTunes 12.4 and newer
  • Variety of interface bugs on macOS 10.13 High Sierra
Added:
  • Support for the next version of macOS
  • New Maximum File and Folder Name Length setting to Advanced Preferences
  • Support for Loved, Album Loved, Work, Movement Name, Movement Number, and Movement Count tags
Improved:
  • "Create Locations Playlists" Tool for iTunes
  • TuneSpan handles very large Spans and Restores. When Spanning and Restoring more than 5000 tracks, TuneSpan will automatically split it into separate batches to not stress the system too much at once. TuneSpan can automatically continue onto the next batch if the previous one was successful
  • TuneSpan handles Restores when the original location no longer exists. TuneSpan will now offer to restore to the current iTunes Media folder instead
  • First run experience. New users will now be prompted to opt-in to Analytics on the second run instead of the first
  • Work, Movement Name, and Year as Dynamic Tokens in the Custom Folder Organization Preferences
  • Removed "iTunes U" and changed "Books" to "Audiobooks" throughout TuneSpan. If you're using an older version of iTunes that still has iTunes U, they will be shown as Podcasts in TuneSpan
  • Replaced interface icons with icons from Primaries by Parakeet
  • Dropped support for older than OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan

This app is just what I needed. With a large music, podcast, movie, and tv show library it's difficult to fit it all on my mac. With TuneSpan I am able to keep everything neat and tidy on different folders on my NAS + external drive. This solution works great with my AppleTV, and it's a perfect solution to a problem that keeps getting bigger.

I got this a while back for $1.99 but haven't used it yet. Am considering new Mac w/ smaller internal SSD so I need to migrate media to external drive. I see that this app hasn't been updated since Oct '15, and on Twitter dev admits he hasn't spent much time on app, had to create Applescript to deal with an album art bug in the app! So I'm a little wary of trusting the app now. Any idea how it compares to PowerTunes (last updated Oct '16)

Worth every cent!

I've been using this app regularly now for over a year & just wanted to comment on it.
I am very happy with this little gem as it does everything I need to keep my external drives for my media server organized & tracked. The UI is easy to use and makes the whole process work seamlessly on my Mac Pro running 4 internal drives.

I also like the way it tracks file name or other metadata issues within iTunes's program & offers to fix these errors before spanning them. It's a wonderful little app that does one thing & it does it very well indeed!

I wish more apps were like TuneSpan. It's easy to use, so easy that I could figure everything out without reading any of the documentation. It works fast and reliably. There is plenty of feedback about what it's doing, so I'm never left wondering what happened. And it looks good! I use TuneSpan to move my music files into my Dropbox (for backup purposes, seeing as I have 1 TB of storage now). I've also set up an automatic span so all I have to do is launch TuneSpan, and it does its thing without any intervention on my part. In the past, I've used TuneSpan to move large video files to an external drive when I ran out of space on my internal drive. I like that I can see where all my files are, and can easily restore everything back to its original location if need be (such as when I got a larger internal drive). Not everyone needs TuneSpan, but if you want to move your iTunes files around, it's the app to get.

I'm sorry so say that this is not what TuneSpan was made to do.

TuneSpan does not merge libraries and I'm not personally aware of any way to downgrade an iTunes Library or merge libraries from different versions of iTunes.

Yep, TuneSpan is fully compatible with iTunes 11.2.2 and continues to work with iTunes updates. It is possible that an iTunes update could break some part of TuneSpan, but that hasn't happened in a long time. But if it does, I will try my best to release a timely fix, and I would post about the issue on Twitter (@RandomApps, @TuneSpan) if you want to follow me there.

In one word: Excellent ! This is the way software should be ! The app relocated my complete music library (almost 450 gigs of music) to an external harddisk without a single problem. It just works, cleans up after and the developer is very responsive ! Worth every penny !

That's very easy to do though. I moved mine to a 2TB external drive, and then in iTunes changed the location of the music library. I've moved it around several times over the years.

Great app that does what it says easily and transparently. Just gave me a seamless way to offload movies to an external disk that I don't need to have sucking up all my precious disk space. Love it!

Thanks so much for purchasing TuneSpan. I'm sorry that TuneSpan is not intuitive for you. I agree that a video tutorial would be very helpful. I don't have a great excuse for not having one other than this is a personal project, and I am much more passionate about the programming side of things and don't have any expertise in creating a decent tutorial video. I know my help information is lacking in some areas as well. I need to get some other people on board to help me create some worthy video tutorials and better help information for TuneSpan. Please feel free to get in touch with me directly with any specific questions or just to discuss TuneSpan. http://contact.tunespan.com

To the developer -- Does v 1.0.3 work with the new iTunes that just was released (which shows in Software Update as iTunes v 10.7)? I love this wonderful program, it is awesome. I hope v 1.0.3 works with the new iTunes 10.7, since I just installed it already without thinking to ask this first. Guess I'll find out when I finish typing this posting, and if v 1.0.3 I'm hoping the developer will come out with an update fix if needed real soon, since this seems to be a well-supported, labor of love application.
