I just tried Viacad, first the installer will not work ... I had to modify the settings of the installer first follwoing what i found there http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2014450 it is absolutely not convenient at all! then : - we are limited with 256 coulors only even if we can edit the colors palette. - impossible to import PNG or PDF since in the importation formats are available only JPEG and PICT which is no longer supported by Apple! In Mac OS X 10.6 it is even impossible to export to this format. - no PDF export, the illustrator export feature is not working since the document created is not even supported by Illustrator. Once open the file is empty... - the transparency is not supported, even with PICT files with alpha layers. - impossible to create our own hatches - impossible to fill a form with a texture or a picture or to create hatches from pictures. - there are printing issues, the pdf printing too, white pages. - the GUI is not user friendly, poorly adapted from Windows to Mac OS apparently.

Everything (just about) you are talking about is bitmaps. CAD is inherently vector based. Why does it need a PDF export? just print to a PDF And when did Apple stop supporting JPEGs? Preview opens and saves them just fine.

it is PICT which is not supported. Because all of this can be done in other CAD softwares ! This rendering is melting bitmap textures and CAD drawings and it is all been done in the same software ! http://niwaconcept.free.fr/en/gallery/index_assets/jardin1.png http://niwaconcept.free.fr/en/gallery/index_assets/j-plantes-nantes2.png

The price is right anyway. I haven’t tried this, but the write up seems ok. M-Rick, I’m not sure what you wish to use this for. Please explain. Why do you care about Illustrator? Illustrator accepts AutoCAD files, though you wouldn’t want to go the other way if you are using it in something more robust than AutoCAD. Why do you care about PNG or any other 2d format? Why do you care about 256 colors? Which rev of AutoCAD it imports/exports is more critical? If you are porting to an illustration app, make your color adjustments there! They are probably more capable in that regard than a CAD app anyway. Its supposed to be a 3D CAD app, not an illustration app. As such you should be concerned what file types it accepts & exports in 3d as either a surface model or solid model. (Not sure which ViaCAD is). Are you talking about a 3D pdf? That is not essential for most uses: 3d PDFs of even moderate size are slow & cumbersome & there are other apps that allow you to whirl & twirl the output, faster & more capably. Important as a 3d choice: Whether it can accept STEP files. Whether it can generate STEP or IGES files on export, at very least. Can it deal with sheet metal bends without screwing around? Interfacing with Illustrator & CAD - is marginal with most CAD apps.
