What's new in TurboCAD Mac Pro

Version 11.0.0:

Note: Full release notes are available here

2D Geometric and Dimensional Constraints:

Dimension and constraint tools are now available to manage the geometric relationships between 2D shapes

Feature Highlights:
  • Thirteen Geometric Constraints
  • Dimension Constraints
  • Variable and Equations
  • Constraint Animation
  • Auto Constrain
  • Animate Dimension and Constraints
Tool Icon Sizing

You can now modify a tool palette to use larger or smaller icons. Right click on the tool bar header to display a popup menu for "Change Icon Size". This menu now provides options for 64,32,24 and 16-pixel sized icons. The default icon size is 32x32

Layer Duplicate
  • A new command to duplicate a layer and all the objects in that layer is now available through Concept Explorer. To access this command, place your cursor over the layer you want to duplicate, right click and select the Duplicate command. If you Duplicate a sub layer, the new duplicated layer is promoted to a first level layer
SVG Import and Export

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. V11 now supports importing and exporting to this new format
The new SVG Import/Export provides an alternative to using the Adobe Illustrator format for sharing vector based (scalable) graphics
Note: For importing SVG files from Adobe Illustrator use a unit setting of mm (or inch) and a DPI setting of 72 to get the correct scale

Lightworks Texture Integration with OBJ, 3MF, 3DS, and SketchUp

Lightworks Photo Rendering now supports rendering texture images imported from OBJ, 3MF, SketchUp, and 3DS file formats. These file types can simply be opened from Open dialogue

High Resolution Printing for Objects with Textures

Prints involving objects with textures now internally use Lightworks to generate the image for the printer, providing a high-resolution output

Skinning with Center Line Path

Skinning is the process of constructing a NURB surface between sections. Skins in TurboCAD can be open resulting in a NURB Surface or closed creating a Solid. V11 introduces the ability to specify a path. The path defines the flow of the surface between the sections. Specifying a path means you may be able to define less sections which may produce a more overall smooth surface. Restrictions - Path must be one G2 smooth curve - Path must be perpendicular at a section intersection

Simplify curves

Some design tasks prefer higher order curves such as arcs, circles, and/or ellipses over lines. For example, sharing data with a plasma or water jet cutting CNC system or extruding a profile into a solid and later adding edge treatments. V11 introduces the Simplify Curve tool to assist in this task. Covert Lines or Polylines into:

  • Arcs
  • Circles
  • Ellipses
  • Splines

This application is AWFUL (and my career as a CAD engineer qualifies me to say so). There are many bugs in the software, point snapping is very inaccurate, tools frequently fail to complete successfully, but the biggest annoyance to me is the crappy rotate view tool. It rarely follows the mouse movement and almost every time gets "stuck" in a pivot-only mode (no rotate) or rotate-only mode (no pivot). Also, it can import OBJ files but cannot export them. Lastly, support is practically non-existent, leaving you to resort to online forums for help, which often is not helpful. I dropped $500 on this application and personally have much higher expectations of software at that price point than what this product delivers. I do not recommend this application to anybody who's serious about productive CAD software.

I found this software (TurboCAD Deluxe v7) buggy under Mountain Lion OS. Undo would invariably insert duplicates of my walls, which I would have to delete time after time. AutoCAD files are hit and miss on import, sometimes scattered all over the drawing after importing. Doors and windows do not propagate when using the 2D to 3D tools, even in the tutorial model. Several of the features do not work as instructed in the manual. Exported 3D drawings import fairly well into Lightwave for rendering, but TurboCAD's library textures do not export with the drawing, and cannot be accessed outside of TurboCAD. That being said, I paid $130 when v.7 first came out, and I might have been happier if I had paid $50 less. Furthermore, I have found enough workarounds, though it pains me to keep deleting extra walls, that I might have even upgraded to TurboCAD Pro if they didn't want to charge $200 for the privilege. (Even today with the big sale.) I do hate it when companies ignore early adapters. All in all, I would warn not to take this software too seriously. It is cheap by comparison to really good software, but it is more for hobbyist than serious draftspersons.

Thank you for your review. It helped me make a decision to not purchase. I just tested v7 on Mac Pro Mountain Lion and CMD Z (undo) still doesn't undo the last action. Very odd as this would be one of my used commands in every design software I use! It's a shame - I was very keen to buy at the special price..

I was tying it in the last 2 weeks. With one word: awful. I found out that the windows version should work great - but the Mac version. No I'll never buy.

Hi, just bought the Pro version. Installation runs fine and TurboCAD tells me that I've entered a valid serial number. However, when I click on the Activation button, Safari opens and tries to load a page from IMSI, but fails. No chance to retrieve the activation code. How can this be fixed? Kind regards, Claus

HI, Macvdr. Try making Firefox your default browser temporarily, then activating. I think that is what I wound up doing.

Hi Christopher, thank you for your reply. I managed to get an activation code from the website. Unfortunately, I now have another problem. Every time I want to enter the activation code into the license manager (Snaks), it crashes! So, currently, I'm not able to activate my purchased copy of TurboCAD Pro :-( (I also contacted the support, but didn't receive an answer yet)

Hi Wolf, I made the mistake that I copied everything from the mail into the serial number field (serial number AND activation code!!!). The moment I recognized this, I could easily fix the issue. :-) I hope this helps you.

I bought this application about 3 weeks ago and being this is my first 3D CAD application that I've bought, so far I must say its been a good experience, Now I know this is no Auto CAD but for someone like myself thats new to 3D CAD, its been perfect. My one objection is to the GUI of the application, it has absolutely not a bit of appeal its very archaic and a bit clunky. The developer could have put a little more effort into it. As far as the application goes it is a great value. So far its been fairly easy to learn by oneself and the one drawback to this is that the tutorials are for the first version and so they don't quite go with this version but its not to bad to figure out. I don't think its wise of the developer to ignore these little things that wouldn't be to hard for a developer like IMSI to just take care off, since it takes away from the user's experience when using TurboCAD Mac 3D that otherwise would be a home run, as it turns out its a triple.
