Voice Candy1.5.1

10 February 2011

Recorder with 8 different effects; discontinued.

Overview

Voice Candy is a fun and useful recorder for the Mac. It does for the microphone what Apple's Photo Booth does for the webcam. Voice Candy makes recording enjoyable by providing eight different effects, such as Vader and Chipmunk, to alter the speaker's voice. Once you have made the recording, you can use it to set a reminder, send an email, or take it with you on your iPod. You can also extend the capabilities of Voice Candy by writing AppleScripts to integrate with other applications.

Features include:
  • 8 different effects to record with that alters your voice
  • Set a remind with your recording
  • Awakes your Mac from sleep when reminder fires
  • You can snooze the reminder
  • Global shortcut key setting
  • Run as a menu app
  • Email recording
  • Send recording to iTunes
  • Extendable through AppleScript

I downloaded this for free via the Macheist offer and I'm glad I did. Several of the effects are not all that great which makes this app mediocre in my humble opinion. The Old Radio, Phone, Bad Sci-Fi, and Sore Throat should be improved or replaced. Chipmunk and Mouse are good but are too similar. Vadar, Robot, and Mouse are probably the best. I would say if the developer improves on the present offering and adds more voice effects it would be worth buying. Until that happens I suggest prospective buyers download it first and make sure it's what you're willing to pay for.

I downloaded this From MacHeist too! The license disappeared from MacHeist as they were doing a house cleaning getting rid of old applications. I was willing to buy a license fot this app but it will not launch in Mavericks. I have to trash it. It is a fun application.

Very nice application, it reminds me Audio Fun Machine on my Atari Falcon 15 years ago... It would be nice to have a "Preview" (or "Pre-ear" ;) ) button, as if you only want to play with the effects you need to press the record button, even if you do not need any recording at all. An option to change effect settings (pitch height, echo delay, lowpass/hipass values, etc..) could be a great feature as well.

Voice Candy has a major design flaw - if you record an audio file and then quit without saving it, the file is lost. This happened to me after recording an important interview and being interrupted - I did not for a moment consider that the software would allow me to quit is without a) saving the file anyway, or b) without giving me the option to save it before I quit. So nice little bit if software for playing with - but not for serious work.

Of the 8 predefined voice effects, only 3 or 4 of them make for more or less interesting selections, IMO. Why not give Voice Candy the capability for the user to customize his/her voice according to an unlimited range of variables. As it stands now, I'm really not impressed.

I would buy this if it could also synthesize a Parrot's voice. Anyone know where I can get Parrot speech for MAC OS X? EC

Note to the developer: I just clicked the download link and it made Firefox completely unusable because it started downloading it as text into the browser window, which slowed Firefox down to a crawl! What's worse is it's not easy to figure out the complete download path until you've clicked the download link. If you will add the following to your apache configuration (you can do this in a .htaccess file), your downloads don't appear as text in web browser windows: AddType application/octet-stream dmg More info here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040211102018600

VC 1.1.2 crashed my Mac (10.4.7, Quicktime 7.1.2, G3 400MHz) hard(!) two times in a row; I had to restart -- are there any requirements regarding performance (VC basically came to a halt before freezing my Mac)?? At least, there are no requirements mentioned here, or on the website. To be clear: my Mac didnt freeze for months (meaning, basically, I cannot remember when it did freeze the last time), so I consider my system in pretty good, ie. normal OS X-shape, etc. I did can record my voice with VC, but the crashs happened when I tried to switch effects.

I use this software to keep track of my things to do and have found it extremely helpful and in the meantime fun to use! Instead of jotting down my notes I record them onto Voice Candy and they pop out when time expires. Using a different voice for each appointment might not seem essential but it brings some light and humor to the dull days of our work in office. My only complaint is that sometimes the warning dialog boxes don't come to the front especially when I'm performing other operations on my Mac. I think it's essential that these boxes float on the top of other boxes to attract attention. After all, who wants to lose that very special appointment?! All in all this program is simply fantastic and is worth every cent I paid for it. Last but not least this company's customer service is fabulous and I highly recommend these guys. I've been using Voice Candy for a few weeks now and I really like it a lot. I bought it with the intention of using like a voice version of Apple's PhotoBooth, which my kids love. After using it a little I quickly realized that Voice Candy is about the best and easiest to use Voice eMail program that I've run across. This app works great for Voice eMails, very simply and straight forward to use, and it can also do all the effects which are fun. I've had the application crash a few times when I was adjusting Preferences, but never while using it. I'm using v1.0 Randy

Cool app. It is a Fun Time, with a microphone! One after thought. Darth Vader and it's voice are Trademarks and is Copyright to Lucas Film Ltd. I am not sure about how much legal trouble some one could get in to if they reused this voice without Lucas Films Granting permission.
