JABMenu

2.6.2
28 November 2015

Utilize Address Book data through a system-wide menu.

Overview

Note: This app is still available for download but the developer of Dialectic has temporarily halted the distribution and sale of all of their products.

JABMenu is a convenient and intuitive way to utilize your contact data through a system-wide menu. The application provides quick access to your contacts' phone numbers, email, instant messaging, postal addresses, URLs, and notes. Selecting a menu item will trigger an action such as displaying the content in large type, copying it to the clipboard, creating a new email message, dialing the phone, or showing an address on a map using an online mapping service. Beyond the built-in actions, JABMenu supports building your own custom actions through a scripting interface allowing you to personalize the software to best meet your needs.

What's new in JABMenu

Version 2.6.2:

Note: Now requires OS X 10.7 or later running on an Intel processor.

  • Improved OS X 10.11 El Capitan support.
  • Added phone number action to dial the number without using AppleScript (will dial using the default application that handles the tel: URI e.g., FaceTime or a softphone).
  • Many minor enhancements and optimizations.
  • Note: The minimum requirement has been increased to OS X 10.7 or newer.

Not 5 minutes into the trial. i registered JABMenu for 2 licenses. I'm an old iAddressX user (still have it on my G5) and JABMenu is just the what I need as a replacement on my Macbook. running 10.6.1 Listing is quick and options as plentiful, I no longer have to fire up AB each time I need a number/email addy. A suggestion: if at all possible JABMenu would be handy as a prefpane instead of a standalone app.

As I write this, the JABMenu file that downloads here is in fact v2.6.3 with a creation date of May 20, 2016.

However, the JNSoftware site is currently closed, saying "we are temporarily halting the distribution & sale of all our products. We’ll be back soon."

I hope they do come back, I count on this app (and iAddressX, too).

Doing a happy chair dance. Latest version 2.6.2 does away with the annoying lag when wanting the full contact list and all contacts show up constantly.

For a long time I relied on CoBook, which has a better-looking interface and has the extra advantage of being free. Then for some unknown reason CoBook's developers decided to take away its ability to dial numbers through Dialectic, so I have switched to JabMenu (it's developer is also responsible for Dialectic, so nothing similar is going to happen here!)

"Improved support for networked sources (i.e., Exchange, CardDAV, & LDAP servers)." Unfortunately when the developer says "networked server" he means just that., a LOCALLY networked server. JABMenu can't communicate directly with Apple's own iCloud server. Which is just a crying shame because that is precisely what a lot of folks need. The first developer to come out with a contacts app. which permits those who can't or won't upgrade to Lion to use iCloud for their contact synchs after June 30, 2012, is going to make a handsome pile of money. But evidently it won't be this app.

Don't bother telling me about SOHO Office. Which costs an outrageous hundred bucks and has a klunky interface because it's trying to do so many things at once. A simple contacts program with a simple interface is all that's needed.

An excellent piece of software that does the wonderful deed of enabling me to avoid the hideous interface of Address Book in Lion, as well as providing more functionality (I particularly like being able to find contacts by company name). I emailed the dev asking how I could script JABMenu to dial my landline with PhoneAmego, and he responded within the hour with a script, detailed instructions and a short video screencast. Talk about customer service!

Oh an update been a while...hope you took out that silly ZOOOOMMMMM sound and animation from 2.5. ;) If you need to look at address book often you need this. Apple should buy this and integrate it into Address Book - why they have not I have no idea.

Thanks for the kind words -- hopefully someone in Cupertino is reading this... The callout at launch is still there but you only need to disable the "Highlight on Launch" in the "Display Options" preferences to turn it off.

Like the other poster, I was looking for an iAddressX replacement, which stopped working in Snow Leopard. I too was relieved. This is a great utility app, just as easy to use as iAddress and just as functional, if not more so. Well worth the dough, as it will get used on a daily basis for years to come.

Some years ago Mibasoft closed down business when the developer went to work for Apple. Several years later Tropical Software acquired iAddressX and we have just released the first Public Beta of the next version. It can be found here: http://www.tropic4.com/iaddressx.html I hope you will try it and let us know what you think.

After iAddress X was broken in Snow Leopard and no developer was in sight I scoured the web for a replacement. I tried several overly complicated menu bar solutions for quickly accessing my addresses and wasn't enthusiastic about any of them. Finding JABMenu was a relief. It actually provides a bit more functionality than iAddress X but is just as simple to use. I've discovered no problems running it in SL and am delighted that the developer had tweaked it in this new release so we can expect support into the future.

I love this app. Been using it since version 1.0. However, it brings my system to a crawl whenever I make a change in AddressBook. I've got some 1,200 addresses and each time any modification is made to the AddressBook JABMenu takes some 5-10 Minutes to update... during which time it is not responding and taking up some 40-70% of CPU. Written to the author about this and hope the problem will be eventually fixed.
