This used to be the best font management software up until version 3. Since then its just been a downward spiral. Each version seems like fixes rather than upgrade. Suitcase Fusion on the other hand was crap until version 3 and has just gotten better with age. I strongly suggest everyone give Suitcase a second chance.

I just lost 3 hours of debugging InDesign 9.2 (CC).
The Fontexplorer plug-in was the culprit. I deninstalled it.
I was not able to open certain documents and one document got corrupted by this (luckily I had a backup).
So, if InDesign crashes and you find lines with "com.adobe.InDesign.Font Manager" in the Console crash log, remove the plug-in.
This is the second time that plug-in caused major trouble.
Monotype would be well advised to test their releases more thoroughly.

Okay, so for me, the problem with fonts managed by FontExplorer not appearing in CS6 applications has been fixed with version 4.1.1. There was no need to clean font caches or anything else of that ilk. So apparently the issue brought up with the 4.1 update was indeed a bug.

This latest upgrade (4.1) is causing all kinds of problems with auto activation in InDesign. InDesign just 'hangs' now when FontExplorer X Pro 4.1 tries to load fonts.

I also could not activate fonts manually. As Revco did, I too cleared application and system font caches (with FE). Restarted the computer but also had to repair disk permissions with Disk Utility. Now, everything works again.

Note: I did not notice FE quitting before the update was applied nor force a restart after the update. So, probably old and new code causing confusion.

Clearing font caches made FEP-activated fonts visible to most applications EXCEPT for Adobe CS6 apps. I had to uninstall and revert back to version 4.0.2.

One thing I noticed after installing 4.1 is that FontExplorerXAutoload.app disappeared from my login items list. (Version 4.0.2 automatically added it to startup items.) Once I launched version 4.0.2, it reappeared in the list. I wonder if manually adding it to the startup items will solve the problem. Unfortunately, I don’t have time right now to deal with this so I will have to stay with 4.0.2 for now.

I love this software BUT ever since upgrading to Mavericks it's had some series issues for me... autostart always hangs on startup... activated fonts seem to disappear and reappear... and now with the update to 10.9.1... FE crashes when i try to activate or deactivate fonts - which renders it pretty much useless...
I think that at this point Linotype should have all the wrinkles out of this thing in regards to Mavericks compatibility.
Badly done Lynotype, badly done indeed!

As a long time FontAgentPro user, I decided to give FontExplorer a try so I installed the trial. I find it has some serious advantages over FAP with font organization and library optimizations. I also like the interface, however I think the list font is rather small. That said, it also has some major shortcomings that make me go back to FAP - first, the app launches every time a font needs auto-activating, and it throws up a dialog box for me to confirm the activation. FAP just shows a quick popup window and does the activation behind the scenes without the app needing to open and no user interaction required. FontExplorer's Classify command is also lacking - FAP added in a lot of the font classification info automatically but in Explorer most of the info is missing. And after I add the info myself there is no apparent quick way to perform a search of a specific type of font, unlike FAP. It's also frustrating to create a "default set" of fonts... you can add them to the Permanently Activated set, but if you need to disable one of those fonts momentarily, it gets removed from the set. I can't figure out why that's useful. So although I feel FontExplorer is more polished, I have to give FAP the edge for my needs.

Not as yet. I've emailed support and they say soon, but no specific time frame... Now that Fusion 5 is out hopefully they will get moving before too many customers are lost.

I almost went to Fusion when I couldn't purchase an upgrade because their payment system is tied into the original address when the first purchase was made - that was an address from 3 years ago!

Manually install the plugin in photoshop CC it works fine. the other app throw up errors. Suitcase Fusion 5 works great with Adobe CC app. I alway use suitcase or font explorer with fonts in place not in vaults and they are much more reliable. The other benefit is you can switch between the different font management and use the same font sets.

Is anyone else having this problem:

Since upgrading to version 3 from 2.5, whenever I create/edit/delete any font sets, folders, add comments or any other metadata, if I quit the program and restart my computer it undoes all of the changes I made during the previous session. FEX still remembers what fonts I've imported or deleted from my database but beyond that, I'm unable to make any changes to it.

I am running OS X 10.6.8 and managing around 20,000 fonts if that helps. 90% are keyworded using the comments field (I started before the Classify feature was added). I've invested thousands of hours organizing everything, so the thought of losing that work makes me very sad :(

Just as a follow-up, I have now tried EVERYTHING to fix this, without success. I'm 99% sure the problem isn't the database or even the file/folder permissions. It's the application itself. Or else OS X 10.6.8. SOMETHING is conflicting with FontExplorer.

I completely removed FontExplorer and reinstalled it under a new admin account after doing a permissions repair. I've tried reimporting my fonts several ways, including restoring from a full backup and by importing them to a new database without any of the old metadata.

None of it seems to make a difference. I can still import and delete fonts from FontExplorer but beyond that, I can't do anything – add comments, category information, create, delete or add to font sets – anything.

Ugh, this is definitely a problem with OS X. Maybe with the ACLs. I can now create smart collections and folders again, and I can add comments and category info to system fonts (anything appearing with a lock icon), but nothing else. No fonts I import will save any changes.

I remember back when I was still using Suitcase, Extensis used to take MONTHS to update its auto-activation plugins every time a new version of Adobe CS was released. I don't understand it. How difficult is it for the developer to modify/update existing code?

The vast majority of people using Suitcase, FontExplorer, etc. are using it in combination with at least 1 Adobe program. Why aren't Linotype, Extensis, etc. giving their developers pre-release beta versions of CS like many third-party developers to test on ahead of time? Plug-in updates should take weeks, not months.

I don't mean to sound rude, but CS5.5 cam out in April. FontAgent Pro released a compatible update in July. It's the middle of August – how much longer do customers have to wait before Linotype releases a FontExplorer update?

I have pretty much tried all of the 'holy' trinity of Font Managers (Yea, I'm not counting Apple's built-in FB): FAP, SF, FEP - I was amazed at Font Agent's Pro ability to keep up with our maddening pace of fonts and suitcases until Snow Leopard - after this, there that FontExplorer has been pretty much leading the way in our stability day-to-day work. Still a little bit buggy but offering really nice features. Fonts turn on when they are supposed to, Apps don't lock out, etc... Now, with 2.5.1 if Linotype could only fix the issue of the main program automatically launching the moment one of the CS5 apps 'requests' a font, we would be much happier. If anyone has a fix for this, please let me know. Otherwise, still not a total 10 in my book.

Stephen Moye

Dear Stephen Moye,

thank you very much for your email.

We tested FontExplorer X Pro 2.5 with MacOS X 10.6.3 and find out that it could happens after update that active fonts are not "visible" for system after update. What you can do is to create one smart set with "active fonts" parameter. Now deactivate all activated fonts and afterwards active them again. Now all your fonts should be "visible" to the system.

Should you have any questions or additional requests, please feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,

Found a solution for older FE releases at Adobe.com: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/506/cpsid_50602.html

Downgraded the InDesing plugin and now efverything works just fine.

I am surprised that not a lot of people are experiencing this problem. Or not a lot of people are reading this and/or are not experiencing the same problem...

Anyway, no news from Linotype yet. I mailed the problem a few days ago so I guess there are not a lot of complaints and I'm sure its related to my system which is a Early 2009 Mac Pro Quad core 2.93 Ghz with Mac OS X 10.6.2 btw.

InDesign freezes with the FontExplorer plugin installed when I open a document which contains fonts which need to be activated. Its completely reproducible, when I remove the plugin InDesign opens the document just fine. When I install the plugin InDesign freezes and needs to be Force Quit.

I cleaned system and application font caches, repaired privileges, trashed InDesign prefs but to no avail.

Anyone else having this problem?
