Handy inexpensive and simple app - just what was needed. I would give it five stars if it weren't for one issue. Upon installation the app opens but does not load in the preferences to launch on startup – a good thing – when set to launch on startup it seems to cause some confusion and slows down boot considerably. Best launched from dock after start.

Version 5.2.1 is on App Store as of 0930 Hrs BST 13th June 2014 Adrien [me] was sceptical about Check Off's stable utility for notes. I am not prepared to write a Review and cannot as of now, a few minutes after downloading 5.2.1 from App Store (when Lucien said he awaited MAS approval of 5.2) Happily for me MAS said there was no $9 charge, "as you have already paid for Check Off".) The first glitch is in Preferences: Change fonts did NOT. I would give it overall 4 stars for being able to save notes as Rich Text. I hope to review Check Off 5.2.1 soon [elastca]?

Check Off used to be one of my daily login apps, now this app is no longer save any datas I enter, has been since I updated to v5.1. Anytime I made the whole bunch of lists, on the next system reboot it act as if I never ever even open this app before. I don't know if this is a problem is unique to me or everyone else has it, but I am not going to enter datas over and over again in CheckOff. Trash!

Check Off 5.0.2 has many bugs. Although three bug reports were transmitted by e-mail, even if one week passes, no replies come. You should consider Check Off purchase carefully. I recommend ToDo. ToDo is compatible with 10.7.

If you want a trial visit the dev's page. October 8th, I believe they posted a link to download a demo version of the app w/ a ten item limitation. Version 5, but not 5.0.1 as far as I know. Link: http://com.chromedomesoftware.s3.amazonaws.com/Check_Off_5.0_Demo.zip

I have been using Check-Off for years, and am still using the last pre-shareware, freeware version (3.8). It is stable, a good combination of simplicity and utility, and aesthetically nice. The only draw I could find to the paid version -- and it does seem like a good feature -- is the fact it can be used on an iPod and synced to the computer. I upgraded the OS to 10.7.1 and Check-Off has finally started behaving erratically - as have some other apps.

Ahhhh.. the AppStore.. where developers now feel there's no place for demo versions or trial software and just want you to pay $9.99 without even a remote chance to see if A) the software runs on your system or B) it fulfills your needs. The AppStore has done one great thing here.... stopped me for purchasing many software packages which I may have actually purchased. To the developer... if you think the bulk of users out there will shell out $9.99 simply because your app is in the AppStore, you're kidding yourself. Offer a free demo or trial otherwise, take your software and place it where all software goes to die.

Finally I found what I was searching for, I tryed so many "to do" apps but in the end I was regularly using textedit and ending with a total chaos. the menu bar feature is the TOP and the way to arrange notes is perfect. A donation is on its way to the developer. thanks! ps:"just a secondary detail, if there was the possibility to set the icons in a smaller size, that would be very appreciated, at least there are just 5 icons and are very easy to remember"

It works, but not very well. it is slow (think a thirty second to two minute delay, dependign on whaat i'm doing), but it works, although i wish that 3.6 was still available (i think that that one was the last native tiger version. if anyone knows where this can be found, email me (And if you have the 3.6 at your house, email it to me as an attachment with subject check off. willie.pryor@earthlink.net. thanks.

Check Off is great! This is exactly what I was looking for - a simple way to organize to do items, and group them by client/subject. I agree that .Mac sync would be nice, but the lack of it is not a deal-breaker. I'll definitely be donating to encourage continued development of Check Off.

Easily the best and most useful todo list I've ever seen and used. This application is worthy of being bundled with the operating system in my opinion. It is extremely easy to use and learn, as it simply just works as you'd expect it to work. The interface is very easy to look at and will feel instantly comfortable to any user. I can't recommend this application enough! It's a shame that the rating system only goes up to 5.

IMO, still the best check-list utility around: easy on the eyes (great UI), easy on the fingers (keyboard shortcut enabled), easy on the brain (self-explanatory). Requests: (1) automatic "check for updates" option; more importantly, (2a) due date column; (2b) ability to arrange by due date with one click. What'll it take ($$) to get a corresponding menubar icon? If you give us a concrete target maybe we can work to meet it.

Love this little app! I use this daily as my only to-do list. Simple, easy, direct. Free (although I use it so much I felt compelled to send a donation). There are certainly to-dos with more bells and whistles, but I found they got in the way or slowed things down. This takes a tiny bit of real estate in my menu bar, opens and closes with the touch of a hot-key, and can be organized and re-organized each day in just a few seconds. Sometimes basic is better.

I like this a lot - easier to use than ToDo X which I was using a while back. A few bugs (I couldn't find anywhere on Justin's site a way to email him about bugs, so I'm having to post them here): • currently I can't change the font colours of the task/folder font in prefs, even though it gives me the options to do so • the 'do you really want to delete this?' dialog needs to pop up on top of the menu, because otherwise sometimes it ends up behind it and I can't click on the buttons! • once there are folders with items in them enough to fill up the pane, there's no way to add a folder at top level without closing all the other folders first (to create a space to click in), as far as I can tell

This little app gets 5 checks. Does what it says, stable, well conceived and implemented, unobtrusive, customizable. Recommended: ? Narrower, less bulky looking menu item. ? Ability to move menu item along the menubar. Is there a comparable calender in the works?

Check Off is one of the best menu item apps ever. Your To-Do's right there on the menu! Improvements I see needed are the text box should stay the size you want it, or maybe a default size. This includes font choice. The iPod notes feature would be great for 1.5 users of iPod. I have a 1G iPod and it would be GREAT to have that feature for older iPods! When printing the list, it would be nice to select text size. Maybe an option for keeping the font the user is using and size of fonts. Would be great to see you, Justin, do a better menu clock/calendar. Something simple and cool. Thanks for this awesome app! My first post at MU too!

GREAT little freeware app that does more than many pay programs, and does it well. You can create a simple list or arrange in an outline format (folders, indent/outdent), with text notes and color labels. Easy drag and drop and multiple-select, and great menu bar integration. Printing and multiple export options round out the features. I would love to see the following features added to further increase usability- 1. Tab and shift-tab to indent/outdent items. 2. A hot key to bring down the task list. I give the program a 4 in Features only compared to pricier, larger programs. I think the feature set is actually perfect for my needs.

I've been using Check Off for quite some time now and never experienced any problems with it. It's pretty robust and has survived System updates, ShapeShifter skins, plays well with other menu-hacking apps -- all with great stability. I hope I never experience some of the problems listed in other reviews (read those before downloading), but it has just been a dream for me. Fast, small and elegant. Just great.

Excellent little freeware. There are many complex (read: bloated) planners out there, this is not one of them. It does what a good to do list should do, remind you. I love that it sits there, no fancy icon just blends into the background. It is very close to my standards of elegance, what ever that is worth! It has been very stable and have not lost any information. One gripe is that the "details" window is not user adjustable, the size is chose randomly, I can raise it but sometimes that covers up some of the tasks. I would prefer if i could pull down rather than raise up. Width is not a needed as much as height. The biggest compliment I could give such a program is that I use it every day.

I have used it for almost a year, and tried it again recently. Unfortunately, the app keeps losing information: the latest task being reduced to "new task", without any pattern to suggest it is related to anything lese but the software itself. And I tested it intensively, corresponded with the original developer, who gave up. The new developer is simply not responsive. I really loved it, but lost too much info to be able to rely on it. Also, the fact that it simply disappeared before fixing a bug as serious as this one is unresponsible even if it was not much money. Don't buy it.

If I clicked on the plus sign, it did nothing. If I clicked on the new folder, it gave me new task. If I clicked on the color symbol, it deleted the highlighted item. If I clicked to the right of the color symbol, it gave me color! Clicking on the gear worked properly. It worked fine for a week or so before it started doing this. Ran permissions: nada. I decided to trash the ap and reinstall a new copy. The new copy buttons all work fine, but now it won't resize the column to make all items visible (checked in prefs). Also, it is too narrow. I need a resize gizmo on the bottom right corner! :) All of the general prefs except the first are working sporadically. I'm on 10.3.4, emac 700MHz power pc G4 with 768 MB SDRAM running check off v3.0b0 Any ideas?

Very nice little To-Do Lister that does almost everything you'd like such a tool to do, and very efficiently and attractively--great design. I would like the app to persist on the menu bar, so that you don't have to manually restart it every time you turn on your laptop. Otherwise, excellent!

Just (well, almost) what I've been looking for: an unobtrusive, easily accessible, standalone to-do list. As a freelancer, I've always got dozens of different projects for as many clients. It's nice to view them all at once during the planning and preparation stages; it's even nicer to tick them off during the completion stages. Would really like to see the following: • iCal or Entourage integration (preferably both) or a syncing option • Due date option with the above for scheduling reminders • Ability to link task to an app or document Thanks for working hard on this app, and thanks for keeping it free.

If a menu icon appears in the menu but doesn't load it's usually because it's set to "Hide" in System Preferences>Accounts>Startup Items. Turn Hide off and it will work at login. This is a bug in Panther. - Abhi

Since this version of Check Off is an early beta, I choose to not have it use the same preference file as previous versions. This allows a user to freely switch between the two versions and use whatever one is suitable for him or her. By the end of the month, I will release an converter application which will take your 2.x to-do list and move it up to 3.0.

This is an excellent tool. It only needs integration with iCal. That'd be fabulous. Just a couple of things that could be improved: - currently when I type I get automatic spell-checking as I write. I don't know how to disable that. There should be a preference item for it. - The access to the Preferences and Quit menu is a bit clumsy. The menu appears with a delay when I click on the icon in the Check Off window. I would prefer if that Preferences/Quit menu would simply appear by command-clicking on the Check Off icon in the menubar. That'd be a lot quicker and handier. - this would be more of an unnecessary extra, but if it is possible at all, I think it would be cool to have an alternative to the menubar display. The option to have Check Off display a floating window; or a small semi-transparent window on the desktop that would only activate on clicking on it, and would stay below icons when inactive. Sort of like a sticky. Looking forward to the next release. I hope the developer stays with the idea of releasing it as GNU. I would gladly donate a few dollars but for small applications like this I prefer when it's an optional rather than a requirement with a nag screen.

I like this program but there are a few improvements I hope the developer will put into the next major release: 1. When you create a new to-do it should automatically be in the mode to name the to do. Right now you have to doubleclick on the item to change the text. 2. It would be nice to have a shortcut button for printing the list. Now you have to click on a button and then select print from a drop down list. 3. I should be able to change the preferences so that when I put a check mark in the done box the item automatically goes off the to-do list if that is the way I want to manage my to-dos. Maybe all to-dos can be written to a log file that is updated after each time you use the program. That way you could always go back and see all of your old to-dos if you needed to without clogging up your main to-do screen.

Check Off 2.4.1 is an exceptional utility. I use it everyday, mostly to keep track of things I come across online and need to take another look at some point, and also to keep track of my to-dos for the day. The addition of categorization with multiple folders is a very welcome feature. Now it is simple to take a quick look at different categories of to-do lists. The one feature I would like to see added would be the ability to add a New Folder wherever you click the cursor, rather than always at the end of a folder's list. Overall, I rate this as a valuable tool for managing everyday productivity.

Great little program. I'm very partial to menu bar plug-ins which help conserve precious dock space. This is elegant and effective. I suggest adding more user customization. I would love to be able to resize the drop down window to be both longer and wider (or some people might like to make it smaller). The ability to change text size, color, font etc. would be a nice bonus as well. With a few more features this could replace OmniOutliner as my ToDoList manager of choice. In that case I'd be sending a donation-if you wanted to accept it. :-) Keep up the good work!
