MUMenu is a menubar item application that will check periodically for daily Mac OS X software updates at MacUpdate. You'll be able to browse small descriptions of the updated products, go to More Info pages, and download them. Highlighted updates (Hot Picks) are highlighted in red, and applications that are already installed on your Mac will display its appropriate icon. When a new update is posted, MUMenu icon in the menu bar will change color.

I am looking for something like MacUpdate. The problem is the$20/yr. I like to see competition out there and now MacUpdate has competition from the Apple App Store. My problem is I am not sure what the differences are between MUMenu, MacUpdate, UpdateMenu, and the Apple App Store.
I am a little concerned that MacUpdate and the others will be squashed by the Apple App Store especially if they can't increase market share and provide at least a slightly better and more cost effective product.
Has anyone that has tried all of these willing to weigh in with a comparison?
I can tell you that the Apple App Store will NOT be providing apps & updates to those applications that they do not approve of, just like the iOS apps in the iTunes store. I don't believe MacUpdate has that limitation.
Also, good luck with getting fast support with App Store. MacUpdate will respond to your email and they sort out issues much quicker.
As for the $20... Well, that's all relative isn't it? If I summed up the time I spent updating every application I had, One-By-One, just once through - I'd be wasting HOURS. MacUpdate did it with just two clicks (but you may need to enter your password for the installer) - download ALL and Install -> confirm. Go and make a coffee and chill-out, come back and enter the passwords the installers that require it (but most don't).
MacUpdate Desktop 5 will find and automatically install updates for over 30,000 Mac apps, screen savers, widgets, pref panes, and plug-ins. Apple's Mac App Store will only show you updates for apps they sell, which by design and virtue does not cover as many apps, and also does not cover non-apps (like pref panes, plug-ins, widgets, etc). You can try out MacUpdate Desktop 5 free for 10 days to see if you like it and fid it useful. The membership fee (about $1.66 a month) is charged to help support our services - we have a staff that updates MacUpdate.com 24/7 and need to cover other expenses like servers and bandwidth - by becoming a member, you show your support for MacUpdate and the Mac software community. If you want to easily keep *all* of your Mac software updated, MacUpdate is your best option. You can find out more about it here: http://www.macupdate.com/desktop/
MUMenu is free, and will show you the last 25 updates posted to MacUpdate.com. You can quickly access the app's page on the website, or download from MUMenu, but it does not auto-install, and does not tell you if an app is one you have installed and if it is out of date. It is basically a convenience to accessing the website. You can accomplish a similar thing using one of the many RSS feeds MacUpdate provides. UpdateMenu is a 3rd party utility similar to MUMenu, which uses the RSS feeds from MacUpdate.com.
I really wish they would update this program. It would be nice to see some new features and maybe some cosmetic changes. Maybe Update Menu will take it's place?
This program appears to be working as of 02/19/2011. It's finding the latest and greatest (as far as I can tell, anyway) so there doesn't seem to be a need to buy MacUpdate. Do tell me if I'm not correct.
At least for now, the best that I can figure out, is to use an RSS FEED from VERSIONTRACKER as an alternative with a menubar-resident drop down RSS Reader.
I will obviously keep using MUMenu because it does alert me to updates for installed apps. HOWEVER...I can't be the only person that notices the menu bar icon turns yellow (falsely) about ten times a day and nothing is updated...they just want you to look at the specials at the bottom of the list.
What a great tool...and where in the hell has it been all my (Mac) life! I have been using a MacUpdate RSS feed, then pouring over 50-100 articles a day searching for any that I have installed, so I can update the.
With MUMenu all my work is done for me...I see the application icon standing out on the list of updated apps it provides (on my timetable) and I can launch the app and do an update This process occurs much quicker than if I wait for the app to do its own update as I might not use in daily.
It would be *nice* if you could limit the license types (not just show them all), and also if you could just limit the software to list what you have in your watch list.
It is 1:55 PST and MU Menu is not updating either by manual or periodic setting. I concur with Archmission something is a miss since yesterday when I first noticed it. I am using OS 10.4.11 on an early Intel iMac.
I removed MUMenu from my start up and then have loaded it this morning and it updated. I will verify if it updates through out the day, but it seems to be working again...
Oops, I meant 30 minute updates. It has not updated throughout the day and even when I manually update it, it does not update.
FYI, Desktop does not seem to be updating the communities either. Could this be a web access issue? While not connected, maybe something is similar. Just speculating.
It only updates when I shutdown MUMenu and restart it. Beyond that, it will not update anymore.
I have been on Snow Leopard since it came out so this did not seem to be an issue with SL.
Desktop 5 and MUMenu aren't connected in anyway. None of the resources are shared between the two solutions. I'm currently running MUMenu and Desktop 5 on my Mac without issues.
My guess is that you see MacUpdate Desktop 5 as the top listing and aren't noticing that the new releases are being updated below the top sponsored listing.

Actually Joel, that is partly the case. I see it as the top listing, but the listing below is not updating at all. the list shows up as the same list for over a day. I have stopped running MUMenu today and will try it again tomorrow to see it it changes at all.
Same here, Joel. It's not that the top item (MacUpdate Desktop 5.0) is keeping itself at the top of the list, giving the impression that the list isn't updating. The entire MUMenu list has fallen well behind the updates showing on the MU site. In other words, it isn't updating. Glad you aren't having issues with this, but a number of users suddenly are. Please look into the problem further.
This app allows you to create custom icon sets by dragging image files into little wells in the prefs dialogue. Does ANYBODY know how to delete these custom sets? Have looked in the app's package contents, system preferences folder, library/application support-the developer must have wanted to hide the hell out of these things. Anybody? Thanks.
Yesterday I called this to the attention of the persons in charge of such matters. I use MUMenu too, and have been _very_ disappointed that it is not working.
I am told that it is currently being worked on. A fix should be along any time now. Sorry for the inconvenience.
MU Menu down for over 2 days now. Error message says "Couldn't update ....Couldn't parse list." This is a wonderful app and I rely on it daily ,,,and have done so for over 3 years now. I trust MacUpdate will attend to this ASAP. Thanks

Yes! I thinked it was problem only on my computer, but I know that is on many comps. What's happened? When the problem will be fixed? I used to use MUMenu for its stable run and low memory usage. I see everything what I need at one sight.
