Java for OS X Lion removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware.
This update also configures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets. Users may re-enable automatic execution of Java applets using the Java Preferences application. If the Java web plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time it will again disable Java applets.

Do apps such as LibreOffice contain a java runtime in the app bundle ? I found out by accident that it runs without having a java runtime installed, I am wondering as os x becomes more like iOS if java apps will contain java in the app bundle, and if a separate java runtime will no longer be needed, sometime in the future.
Finally! Java off by default in Safari. This should have been done ages ago. I haven't run into a single Java web app since 2006. IT should be treated like a plug-in, not an integral browser feature.
Kudos to Apple for making the change. I have had Java disabled in Chrome for 2 years and haven't even noticed. Turning Java off by default is a great choice, other browsers should follow suit.
As has apparently been the case for some time now, the MacUpdate link downloads an older version of Java than it's supposed to. After installing it Software Update still lists the 2012-003 version. If I download the Java update from the Apple Downloads page, however, I get the right version and SU no longer lists it. I don't know where MU is getting its Java links, but they need to get this straightened out - otherwise, people who think they have patched Java will still be exposed to the Flashback trojan. And this time it won't be Apple's fault.
PS: Even Apple's web site has some old links. And the pages for the Java updates are still labeled with the old versions. However, the download links on the specific pages download the right version - I downloaded numerous times to figure this out. The right link for Java for Mac 2012-2003 is http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1515/en_US/JavaForOSX.dmg.
go to "/Applications/Utility" folder and launch "Java Preferences"; Software Update will run automatically and you'll get Apple Java for OS X Lion 2012-002.
Late afternoon now and still no stand alone. I don't like to use software update because i have multiple macs, I don't want to download the same thing multiple times, i want a nice stand alone .dmg i can use for mass deployment. I'm also in a very rural area where downloading multiple times means a lot of extra time (1M dsl connection). Very disapointing of apple.
Apple finally got its act together. Rather than set up a new kb/DL page, they modified the existing, so the Visit Developer's Site link above now takes you to a properly labeled page for 2012-002.

As of this morning, the link above still points to the version 2012-001 disk image. I haven't had any luck tracking down 2012-002 anywhere but Software Update. Hopefully Apple will make available a disk image for 2012-002 later today.
I don't get it... the previous 2012-001 update was never presented to me in Software Update (several attempts), and I never tried installing it from the disk image. This 2012-002 update is not appearing in Software Update either. Late '11 MacBook Pro, OSX 10.7.3. I guess I'm being updated unawares, automagically.
Quortz, I believe Java is an optional installation on machines running Lion. Apple no longer includes it with the OS. Updates will only be presented to you via Software Update if you pulled down and installed a previous version of Java for Lion.
Rardin .. yes you are correct. Java under Lion is optional, but after you install it, Software Update will monitor it and offer updates when available. Like I said, I was able to update via Software Update .. it's the downloaded disk image that still has issues. I was posting as an "FYI"
Apple doesn't listen anymore. They're a big corporation now, and that's the way they operate. I will bet that they don't even look at these boards. Try to contact them on they're website -- hard to find. There's a reason for that -- they don't care.
Rardin and Tpet, thanks. I guess that explains why, when I tried running the Java Preferences application, it said I would have to install Java Runtime to use it. It gave me the option of installing it, but I declined. I've only been using Lion for a couple months, but I figured if I haven't noticed any real Java issues with Lion by now, I would just leave well enough alone and skip it. I haven't yet checked my older MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, but now I expect it will offer to update Java, unlike this Lion machine.
I sure hope that this update fixes the problems I've had with the Java Update released yesterday, which broke all my Mac OS X development tools, preventing me from submitting anything to the App Store.
The only way of fixing that problem was to use Pacifist.app to get around the Mac OS X installer's "version check" and downgrade...
