DejaLu overview

DejaLu, from the developer of Sparrow, is an e-mail client with a beautiful UI, a friendly interface, amazing high quality, and amazing new features. Built from the ground-up using Open-Source MailCore and libetpan that I maintain (and that other apps such as Airmail and Spark are using as well) I created DejaLu.

Features
  • Slick and Simple User Interface - The user interface has been designed to reduce the amount of "computer administrative debris" and maximize the content. Brand new redesigned format and font size for each one of your email thread. DejaLu is simply easy to use and beautiful.
  • Zen Notifications - Inbox Zero email is really hard to achieve for a human being. For most of us, emails accumulate and the amount of email counter is usually out of control. Zen Notifications is an amazing feature for email notifications and probably the best way to fight the stress of unread emails. A Dock badge without counter appears when there’s a new message and goes away when you bring DejaLu to front.
  • Energy Efficient - DejaLu downloads only the emails you need, which makes it much more efficient, saving you disk space and battery.
  • Gmail Friendly, Desktop Friendly - The following features have been implemented on client side: labels, archive, signature, and aliases. It supports drag-and-drop, and it can collapse like a widget so it doesn’t take lots of space on your screen.
  • CC/BCC - I believe that CC/BCC is an outdated feature. Some software such as Front are literally letting people share their entire inbox to avoid having to CC or BCC. The original version of DejaLu didn’t have that feature but I’ve realized that many of us were probably too used to it from the other mail clients. I believe that adding this feature back to DejaLu will add a great value to the users.

I don't see how to contact the developer, anybody knows? The privacy policy has email hoa_at_dejalu_dot_me but I don't know if that works, have not received a reply on that. Two issues I observed so far: 1. /private/var/folders/x8 ... I don't know much about schematic of how apps operate on MacOS but I would expect the application to run from the Applications folder. DejaLu seems is copying the DejaLu.app into the folder /private/var/folders/x8 and it runs from there. The issue is it seems to create a new fresh copy of itself every time the application runs? Is this necessary? Is this how applications work on MacOS? The issue with it is with LittleSnitch. Every time DejaLu.app starts, it LS will ask me for permissions, because the location of the DejaLu.app changes in that folder /private/var/folders/x8, every time the app starts, the location changes. The new location is in a virtual volume and the name of that volume is a random string and the string changes every time. So it is impossible to save the LS rule for the application as it is a temporary location. 2. Adding additional email beyond the 1st email is not possible for writing emails. The app complains the Drafts folder needs to be created. Where? In my Outlook account, there is already Drafts. I tried to use Labels to create a label called Drafts. When I tried that to do for the account that doesn't have the folder, the app would just crash. So while it is possible to read emails from multiple accounts, not possible to write email from any additional account beyond the first account that was added.

WOw what a nice email client it is gonna be. I had issues adding the regular Outlook but it worked with IMAP Outlook after several tries, didn't work from the main menu, had not received emails but then worked after re-adding the email account from the confirm screen. It's FAST and is what is great. Works on older MacOS which is great. It is a relatively small email client, and has almost no memory foot print. All tick boxes checked. The only thing I wish the beta version had is ability to hide the dock icon if the menu icon is enabled. but okay that's just a small thing.

As ex-lover of Sparrow I was searching for a mailclient like this one for years. After spending a lot of money for even paid e-mail clients like Airmail or Inbox clones I am happy that I have found this new one. I would like that when I not show the Sidebar the maillist would be as dark as when I enable the Sidebar. I use dark mode in macOS b.t.w. I hope there will be updates too. But for now I'm glad that I came this one across.

Excellent app overall. Very fast connecting to Gmail sending or receiving. Elegant design. Vast improvement on Mail but without the bells and whistles other apps offer but only useful to users flooded with emails every day (Spark, Canary, Astro, etc.). One urgent improvement would be to turn down down the absurdly high volume on the whoosh sound emails make as they go out. It's deafening! I was emailing in an airport today and people around me kept staring every time another email went out, wondering what on earth I was up to making all that noise.

Still the best email client for Mac and gmail. Working great for me in Yosemite. For not receiving a single update in 3 years, that is saying something.

If you're looking for another IMAP client after Sparrow, give MailMate a try! It is extremely fast, has some killer views (Conversation View is one), and has a really fast and flexible search function.

Under 10.8.1 with 2 accounts configured in Sparrow (one with a few thousand emails, one with a couple hundred), processor usage spikes to 99.9% (for Sparrow) and while the app is responsive during this time, it cannot be quit without force quitting. This is under 1.6.3... 1.6.4 contains "bug fixes" that might resolve this, but it's not yet in the Mac App Store and it seems the MAS releases in general lag about 2-3 weeks behind the ordinary updates, which is pretty annoying for a bug like this one.

I have come to the conclusion that Google products have a rotten odor. Including Google Drive, this miserable app,and Music Player which is totally unnecessary. Most or all of their products are dedicated to their own interests not OURS!

What a shame. Why does Google do that? It just makes people hate Google. Now they'll put the amazing designers of Sparrow to work on some lame project that no one will ever use.

Yes, *sigh*, it's a shame that cool mail apps like Sparrow don't have a feasible revenue model to continue in business. I'm very sorry cuz I really like Sparrow (though it does still have minor annoyances that haven't been fixed and probably won't be fixed now). Thank goodness there's still Mailplane to fall back on, and it remains the best g-mail app available. Many thanks to Reuben for keeping up the good fight for better software. Note: I don't keep any emails on my hard drive, downloading attachments only, so you see Mailplane really is perfect for me! I hope other developers will continue to innovate in the mail client apps field.

It was good while it lasted, but I as a rule of thumb try and avoid Google products. So thanks Google... Never the less Apple Mail is great and looks beautiful in Lion/Mountain Lion and has all the features I need so no major harm done. Same to see another promising small project get eaten by corporate giants (Google in particular)

I never got used to the mail client from Apple or any other company for that better. They all seem to use a UI, that looks like it has never changed since 1998. Who still marks his mails "as read" these days? I need to organise my mails so I can find them later, if I have to. Sparrow has a great UI in my opinion, it's fast, looks good and everything is super smooth. BTW: Sparrow has been updates (bugfixes only): Version 1.6.4 (1176)

As a developer I have to say this is what happens if users are not willing to pay a fair price for software. See also: http://appcubby.com/blog/the-sparrow-problem/
