Herald is a notification plugin for Mail.app, Apple's Mac OS X email client. Inspired by the excellent Mail.appetizer plugin, Herald shows you popup notifications whenever you receive new Mail. It also allows you to perform common actions directly from within the notification window, including deleting messages, initiating replies, viewing messages in Mail, or marking messages as read.
Herald's appearance is highly customizable, allowing you to change the background color, text color, size, shadow, transparency, and position of the window. Herald even provides a scrolling text view so you can
I was able to get this to install successfully by deleting ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/ before running the installer. However, Mail throws up the "incompatible plugin" dialog upon launch. Also, Info.plist for Herald reports the version as 2.0.2 (for the bits downloaded via the "Download Now" link here and also downloaded from the author's site).
I got it to install when I logged under a greatly simplified account. I suspect there's a conflict with something else in my standard configuration. SpamSieve?
Something that's strange about this Herald installer is that it asks, "How do you want to install this software?" While most installers ask if I want to install it for everyone or for only one user, Herald's installer offers only a single choice, "Install for me only."
You should follow the manual. Go to the core, use +I and '+' > close > run Terminal (not both line in onces! Separate with enter, and second line > enter. Try to install. Prob. won't work =}. Go back to +I and '+' again > notice that now you can't change anything (there is no OK button) > close> close everything > run install > must work now. It took awhile but It did by me.
Herald-the-Third -- I believe that you're describing the following (from erikhinterbichler.com):
In Finder, select the menu item "Go" > "Go to Folder..." and enter "~/Library" (without the quotes). Make sure it is "~/Library" (with the squiggle in front) and not "/Library". Then navigate to the "Mail" folder. From there, select the "Bundles" folder and go to "File" > "Get Info". At the bottom of the info window there is a "Sharing & Permissions" section. Click the lock at the bottom to unlock. Then click the "+" button, select yourself, and give yourself "Read & Write" privileges. (If the "Herald.mailbundle" folder already exists in the "Bundles" folder, do the same thing for that folder also).
If this still doesn't work, it's possible that your Mail bundles were disabled somehow. Open terminal and type:
Even though the installer kept giving me error messages, apparently it succeeded in installing Herald correctly. It's working under OS X 10.7.2, and I'm happy for that!
Love it -- find it more useful than Growl Mail, because it actually lets you do something -- but would still like to see a Print button added to the options.
It works on 10.6.6 but it does not notify for the first message(s) just after the Mail.app opened even it is on the background. Notifications for next messages are okay.
This software does not work for me.
Is it possible that nothing happens?
If the software is "probabilistic" do not publish it . . . .
No conditions.
Leopard 10.6.5. Mail: the last.
Doesn't work for me. Followed instructions implicitly. I don't get an error when using the bundle (it isn't automatically disabled), but Herald doesn't operate.
Go to ~/Library/Mail/Bundles (Disabled)/Herald.mailbundle/Contents/Info.plist
(or, in your case, to …/Mail/Bundles/…)
Open the Info.plist in TextEdit.
Add (not! replace) the mentioned two lines to the Supported Plugin Compatibility UUIDs like this: http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/3997/heraldplist.png
Save.
Move Herald.mailbundle back to ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
For some reason (probably something I did wrong),
my Info.plist's permission got weird and I couldn't read nor open it.
I typed in the following command in the Terminal
sudo chmod 777 Info.plist
and Herald started working for my Mail 4.4.
Hmmm. Both strings appear in the array of the info.plist file, and after a reboot it seems to work - some of the time. I send messages from one of my accounts to another, and nothing appears. Most strange.
I have tried to install this app several times but the installer keeps telling me it fails to install. I have no idea why it will ot install, any hints or pointers will be welcome.
I do shut down Mail.app when installing other than that there is nothing I cna figure that prevents this app from installing???
Is the Herald preference showing up in your Mail preferences? If not, there may have been a permissions issue when installing. I just released a new installer that should fix it, so try downloading that. If you still have problems, feel free to send me an email and we can try to fix it. (You can find my email on the Herald website).

Herald is a free download and requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Note: Mail plugins are not officially supported by Apple. While Herald has been thoroughly tested, it's possible it may cause unintended conflicts with Mail or with other unofficial Mail plugins, especially after OS updates. It's recommended that you backup your computer before installing Herald or any other Mail plugin, and always before installing any updates to Mail or OS X.

If the developer will add the diversified mail indicators, like in dockstar, it will be the fundamental all-in-one plugin for mail!
