MailRaider... Are you a Switcher? Have you got old e-mails archived somewhere? Have you ever wished that your Mac could read your old Microsoft Outlook .msg files? If so, MailRaider could be just what you need. So far, it's very much a beta - but nearly all of the functionality is now present. But it can read your Outlook e-mails, and it can extract the attachments. It can convert your email to rtf or eml. Try it. And let me know how you get on.
What's New
Version 0.7.0:
Adds support for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and improves the way that attachments are handled.
This version is Intel only - but the previous, PowerPC-compatible, version is still available for download (see Related Links below).
I was surprised to find that Outlook 2011 was unable to handle msg files, and very happy to find this nifty utility.
My only complaint is the attachments panel. So far all of the attachments have shown up in 8.3 format, much as long filenames used to show up in pre-XP command windows (i.e. I have three attachments in an email I'm currently looking at. All of them show as "Softwa~1.ics" - opening in Outlook 2007, each of these have a longer title with the date of the calendar entry, "Software Deployment Survey 02-01@10amCT.ics" for example. Looking in MailRaider, I cannot see which attachment to open).
Other than this limitation, I have no complaints about this tool, *and* the price is right!
Recuires installation.
After that you might need to view info on an msg-file and set MailRaider to be the default viewer for msg-files. After that it's all peachy.
This is an excellent piece of software. I have been looking for something that will allow me to open Outlook .msg files and access the attachments embedded in them.
I see this thread is a tad old now... but I just found this software for the first time. Works great on most, I do have some that it doesn't seem to read if anyone's interested in trying a bit of diagnosis. Also totally agree, a spotlight plug-in would be fantastic !!
I'm having trouble to open msg file on my mac.
Files were created on Outlook 2011 (win XP) and I'm trying to open them under Lion, with Mailraider 0.7.
Basically, when I double click a msg file nothing happens. When I try to open from the "File>open" menu, the pop up stalls after I selected my file and clicked open.
Not sure what to do....
Are you sure that your .msg file is an Outlook message file? Could it be that it's an .eml file with the wrong extension? If it is, just rename it .eml and Apple Mail will open it without more ado.

A great addition to this, would be to create Spotlight and QuickView plug-ins to allow these email files to be searched and previewed.
Keep up the good work. It's looking very promising.
