Its funny how the update thingy works in this software: it has a system preference panel with an update-tab which has a "Check now" Button which brings you to the website from where you have to download the whole package again and, after that, you have to install it
HEY WMV-Developers, that isn't called automatically update, that's called an user harassment and involves an Admin-Password... every time an update comes out.

Perian does not support WMV and only has poor WMA support.

Perian works great in combination with Flip4Mac though.

I can remember the last time I looked at a WMV video. Everything is either flash based and/or H.264, etc. nowadays.

Isn't WMV pretty much dead?

MacUpdate seems to provide a Flip4Mac download from their server. The official download is

Please try again, it worked for me!

Flip4Mac support can help you how to set up QT 7 Player in Lion.

bjad: it's working in QuickTime 7 Player and in VLC, but I have to open the app, and open an URL manually, using the menu. In Snow Leopard, I just had to create .inetloc shorctuts in the Finder, and hop!, it opened in QuickTime X in full screen mode... Let's hope Apple will fix that in the next QuickTime update

You can change default QT Players in the Terminal.

To force it to use QT Player 7, enter:
defaults write net.telestream.wmv.import QTPlayerApp com.apple.quicktimeplayer

To force it to use QT Player X, enter:
defaults write net.telestream.wmv.import QTPlayerApp com.apple.quicktimeplayerx

To return to default, enter:
defaults delete net.telestream.wmv.import QTPlayerApp

I have had no luck with this client. Whne you start up a WMV movie... Quicktime just hangs there while only a tiny portion of the Video loads.

Of course I'm on a PPC in OS X 10.5.8. maybe that's teh problem.

Maybe your file is corrupted.

Please also check if you have 3ivx installed in the QuickTime folder. It conflicts. You don't need 3ivx if you have Perian installed.

Yo, is this software even remotely useful for me anymore? Seriously, I used to use this software and would totally give it a five star rating. But is it still useful for me? The only way I would know for sure is to download this update right? Well I guess I'm too lazy to do that again. Feedback please?

What did you guys change? please reverse it so I can stream my links also with an up to date Flip4Mac, dont like to stick to the old 2.2.3.7 forever also it doesnt stream smoothly.
I also downloaded the Streaming Utility app but that doesnt work for me unfortunately..

I hadn't updated in a while, so I updated my G5 to this latest version. There is no longer an option to load the WMV before playing, and whether or not I'm playing the WMV as it's loading, it takes much, much longer to load now, like 10x longer at least (it seems like, the larger the file, the slower it loads). I need to see if I can re-install the older version.

On my MBP 5,2 the installer launches and just sits in the dock with the little white dot. That's all. Nothing. I don't need to "Force Quit." I just Quit from the menu. But no installation action either and nothing written to any console logs. The installer writes Seems to be a benign problem, but you never know...

Well, I've tried all the usual voodoo with no luck. This is the only issue I have with my well-maintained system. I am tempted to just open the packages and put all the bits where they are supposed to go. However, that method would not leave a receipt behind so permissions could not be corrected if they were wrong. Installer problem seems to occur regardless of user account under which it is run, so something is likely amiss in the Library or System folders. I am not having problems with the older version and just installed this latest one on a Snow Leopard installation that I am building from scratch on an external hard drive. In general it has become really hard to recreate a new system from scratch, remembering the settings, getting the printers installed, etc.

There is a bug in the installer. If your account is Filevaulted, the installer squawks that it can't find a needed disk. It then sits there patiently waiting, but there is nothing you can do and it won't let you quit normally, so you need to force quit the installer application.

The error I'm seeing...

Please insert the "xyz" disc to continue installation.
You have chosen to install software that requires this disc.

Moving the installer package out of the FileVault volume is a workaround described in this Knowledgebase article.

I've never seen an installer behave like that, but the workaround did the trick..... silly me, for not taking an hour or so, to search the knowledgebase for a problem that shouldn't have occurred in the first place.

But, I do appreciate the response. Thank you!

I'd noticed that FileVault issue/workaround somewhere else a few hours earlier when installing the update, then was frustrated not to find it again after seeing your post. Fortunately it was an easy search for that KB article instead. :)

If one uses Apple's standard installer, it is his job to "workaround" some issue (!) which is in fact the built in functionality of OS X since 10.3 or .4.

No need to apologize, they should care about such issues more than sneaking silverlight and remotely pulling images from MS servers in success screens.
