you did stupid job here.

Could this be an outcome of some App Store policy worshipping copyrights and stuff (Apple DVD Player doesn’t do snapshots either; neither ever did Quicktime Player) -- which would be incredibly stupid, wrong, and totally against any sane notion of fair use (but see the DVD Player, Quicktime Player examples).

actually, i didn't even notice the snapshot function was broken but it also lost apple remote support and full screen navigation (like frontrow, which i actually didn't use it).
alongside this, they managed to make a somewhat ugly (but functional) UI even uglier. the default movist theme now is all transparent and puts a lot of buttons together in a tight space, to the right of the progress bar. they made the app icon even uglier as well and it stretches to a pixelated version of it when no movie is loaded, on the window background.
the new sidepanel is also 100% transparent (it's nice to have control over opacity) and non resizable (it shows truncated names all over, specially in the filters pane).
some nice new features are the system clock which you can put on the corner of the window in fullscreen and the fact that its font/size and position is customizable as well as system messages (play/pause,forward 10 secs, etc.), as opposed to just the subtitles.
the subtitle filenames, now, actually show up on the subtitle menu (not just subtitle 1, subtitle 2) and the menus are more streamlined/simplified/straight forward to use.
there's also a handy new option to pause automatically the movie when out of fullscreen (there was already an option to play automatically when switched to fullscreen) and hardware acceleration for supported graphic cards (not mine).
most of the options in the advanced tab (v0.6.x) are now put together in the default tabs for more coherent access. the subtitles tab now uses drawers (?) for the subtitle options (as opposed to sub-tabs like in the old version), not really sure why.
coming out of fullscreen resizes the video but leaves the screen black until i move my mouse, on os x 10.6.5, unless the transition animation is on, in preferences, which is a bit jerky and i preferred leaving it off in v0.6.x. quitting the app is a bit slower and i can't seem to "reopen" the movie (and automatically reload the subtitles) by double clicking the movie in path finder, if the movie is already open, which was useful to test subtitle changes after editing them with jubler or downloading new ones with subsmarine (there's an option in the advanced tab in 0.6.8x which enables this behavior but can't find it in v1.0.x).
overall, the new version "felt" a bit slower and jerkier (no real proof on that, just a feeling) and you need to set your options from scratch since it uses a different .plist file.
for lion users, it may be well worth the update but for the (snow) leopard crowd, i think you'll be better off with the old version (if samiamwork continues to update it, which he said he would when he had time, maybe we could even have some of these v.1.0.x small new features).

in the control panel, the movie size (in mb, gb) was also removed and you can only see the codec and dimensions. to see the file size (and fps) you have to click on the codec button.
using the ffmpeg engine, the next frame works but the previous frame doesn't (in v0.6.x, neither works) while using the qt engine, both work but the previous frame plays slowly if you keep the hotkey pressed.
just so you know (even if you don't care).

It is the same source just continued as a commercial venture on the app store they say this on the google code site. I am not sure if it was sold or if it is the same people driving it. Anyone know?
This is one of MANY apps since app store came along that were open source doing this because of how Apple takes care of all the admin & publishing for them many programmers suck at.
Great little app though really like the app store version!

There's always the free MPlayerX available both on and off the MAS. I think it actually has a nicer UI, but Movist has much better keyboard shortcuts (try using it in conjunction with Better Touch Tool).

well, i don't think it's the same movist!
first off, the developers of movist (in the app store) are not cocoable or moosoy, but a guy named "Movist".
2. the webpage is no longer code.google.com but a site called imovist.com, which btw you can't open. i always get a "failed to open page" error.
3. the app now costs 3.99 euros….. (it's not about the price, but maybe it's a rip-off)
i guess a word from the devs will clear things up

I have been in contact with coachable, he's the dev of this mac app.

from arjuna's reply, a couple posts below, it's already in MAS at $4.99 which you can check in the original korean page:
http://cocoable.tistory.com/
another MAS-only app, just what i need, since i'm still on 10.6.5.
samiamwork's fork on github, also seems stalled. oh well...

gatovadio, there's still vlc. maybe it's not that pretty and convenient as movist, but it gets the job done ;)

can you define 'pretty good'? forget about the GUI.
does previous/next frame work, does it play dvds like vlc, does it show the actual filename of the .srt files in the 'subtitle' menu, does it play all files in a folder even if they're not sequentially named, you know, useful stuff like that.
thanks.

I'd recommend using this skin, which makes the GUI a lot nicer:

Also, could MU update the posting to the newest version, 0.6.9, available here:

But as I seen at the project-page, they did some work @ Sep 06:
dx/sub subtitle display fixed.
some memory leak fixed.
snow leopard compatible.
Still no download available, but it looks good. I hope they will make the source-code also snow-leopard compatible. Cheers!
BTW: Movist uses more CPU than every other player, but it's also very fast and responsive (which comes with a price).

Are there any nightly builds for Movist? Or can someone build it from the available code? Because I can't. :)
Just this review can show how good Movist is. I simply don't want to go back to VLC or MPlayer Extended.

In the project site, you can enter this problem at the "issues" page.

VLC can read this subtitles with out any problem.
Some times has isue with sound.
Beside that good product and price :)

I think this is a sort of auto-size but it's really big when the sentence are short. Weird.
Changing size doesn't work.
