Does the version on the App Store support playback of incomplete/(currently downloading) files, without having to reopen the file once the incomplete parts are done downloading?

The old 0.6.8 version supports playback, but it seems to remember how much of the file was incomplete at the time you open the file, so even if the file is fully downloaded by the time you reach previously incomplete parts, you have to reopen the file.

This feature is the only reason i use VLC.

i've been having trouble for weeks now with what i thought was Lion. Apple helped me track down a file called "unar" within the Movist app. it takes over my computer and causes the spinning ball and drains the hard drive of free space. within 20 minutes i lose 90 gigs. restart gets it back. it slows the computer to a crawl. anyway, this file unar is somehow creating a folder in the invisible usr which is temporarily filling the drive with far files that have not been uncompressed and it temporarily uncompresses it. this is the strangest thing i've seen yet. Movist is definitely causing it. i force quit the running unar files that are running simultaneously in activity monitor and everything goes back to normal, but i still have to restart. i've lost time and money trying to pinpoint the cause of this problem. SHAME ON YOU developers of Movist. It's a virus disguised as a plague.

unar is part of the underlying code from the unarchiver, developed by Dag Ågrenit's and it's not a virus. i think maybe movist has the ability to play movies inside archives but there may be a bug somewhere. if you're using the app store movist version, there's an option to report bugs on the movist menu.

Very good alternative to VLC. Plays almost everything. Nice interface too.

My suggestion:
If you got $5 - buy this. Otherwise use VLC.

Overall very nice app. Older versions seemed to me just being a different UI for the crappy QuickTime. This here seems to be a totally different program.

There is a crasher bug in Movist though: Watch a movie in Full Screen mode, press CMD-O and select another video to watch, do it again and again, and after several times Movist crashes. Console says anything about a "broken button" or something.

v1.1.3 is out (not updated here yet) and to be fair, i have to say they have been working hard to make this new version as good as the old one (they updated from 1.0.4 to 1.1.2 and now to 1.1.3 in a short time). app store or not, movist has always been top notch, reliable and now, very affordable movie player (no frame drops, out of synch audio and pristine subtitle support, among other things). ok, enough of the mumbo jumbo here you go:

v1.1.3

movie snapshot & full screen navigation is back; remote bugs fixed (menu button for fullscreen); it supports skins so you can make your own or use the prettier qt skin (already available in earlier versions but i missed it); background movist icon is now hi-res; ability to show system time/remaining time in fullscreen; subtitle rotation is back so you can switch to a different subtitle with the keyboard, new feature to customize all keyboard shortcuts for all menu controls; a lot of bugs squashed and it feels as snappy as before (window resizing and overall response); a couple more options added like 'add all subtitles when only 1 movie in folder' (useful to load subs even if they're named differently from the movie) or whether to include or not the top, center and bottom subs in subtitle rotation.

as it is, i could use improvements on loading all movie files in a folder independently from being identified as series or not; resizable sidebar with more basic info for the video/audio (easy to do with mediainfo); eq and audio preamp/volume booster (useful for my mbp speakers).

if you don't mind the appstore, 5 bucks is well worth it and you'll get future updates but to put your mind at ease, if you don't need the new features, the old free version is still up to par with the new one, in performance. sorry to flood this with comments but i just love this puppy.

Does Movist support full screen play in external display? I can't find the place to change the default full screen play to external display.. It's pity if it doesn't support. I could only click on green button by now...

can't you command-f/double click on the movie window on the external? there's a preference to disable lion's built-in fullscreen (which i think causes problems with dual displays) and use movist's default fullscreen.

I really like Movist 1.x. There are plenty of reasons for this, but maybe the biggest standout is Movist's superb handling of subtitles. As I understand it, Movist loads and renders subtitles independently from the video (embedded subtitles are demuxed first). This allows Movist to display more cleanly rendered and readable subtitles, and to display them on the letterbox without altering the picture it's displaying. MPlayerX (also a great app) now has the ability to display subtitles on the letterbox, but to do this it has to alter the video frame so that the letterbox, and in turn the subtitles, are part of the picture (MPlayerX and every other video player on OS X that I'm aware of render subtitles as part of the video). This then requires additional processing power, because a larger frame is being rendered, which in turn increases the chance of stuttering during playback. (The point of that comparison is not to criticize MPlayerX, but to explain how Movist's subtitle handling is unique.) The inability to load embedded subtitle fonts in MKV containers is, for me, an insignificant price to pay for the advantages that Movist's subtitle handling confers.

and as a result, subtitles don't stretch/shrink when viewing different aspect ratio movies. the font size you choose in the preferences is the size you get.

I was fearing they stopped developing.
But as I seen at the project-page, they did some work @ Sep 06:
dx/sub subtitle display fixed.
some memory leak fixed.
snow leopard compatible.

Still no download available, but it looks good. I hope they will make the source-code also snow-leopard compatible. Cheers!

BTW: Movist uses more CPU than every other player, but it's also very fast and responsive (which comes with a price).

I don't understand why they don't release a point version like 0.6.5 to rescue us, Snow Leopard users, from the huge memory leak. If I want to watch a movie of more than 1 GB, I have to stop in the middle of the movie, quit Movist, and then re-open it.

Are there any nightly builds for Movist? Or can someone build it from the available code? Because I can't. :)

Just this review can show how good Movist is. I simply don't want to go back to VLC or MPlayer Extended.

Unfortunately it is quite bad. If you pause the movie, you'll see everything lags at the system. I am sure it is easy to fix, and hopefully they update it soon, because Movist is really very good movie player.

In the project site, you can enter this problem at the "issues" page.

Movist now support sub/idx subtitles but why are they so big ?

I think this is a sort of auto-size but it's really big when the sentence are short. Weird.

Changing size doesn't work.
