Taply is a simple soundfile player. Although a lot of similar tools do exist for Mac OS X, I did not know of any which behaves exactly the way I want it to, so I wrote this application.

The main difference between Taply and other players lies in the fact that it consists of nothing more than a tiny floating window and that it will quit after having finished playing. This way, (at least for me) it's the perfect tool to scan quickly through a large number of audio files. Taply is localized in English, German, French, Italian and Swedish.

What's New

Version 1.7:
  • Added a preferences window, which can be opened throught the contextual menu.
  • Added shuffle mode (see preferences).
  • Support for Retina/high-resolution displays.

OS X 10.6 or later

The best. I was looking for a player as a tool for browsing as an editor sidekick/helper. Sometimes I'm working with protools editing a broadcast ad and I don't want to open iTunes to see and hear some files but I don't want to use the tiny organizer of Protools either. Certainly I don't want to pay $99 dollars for red Snapper either just for that! that's where Taply comes in handy! and it does a great job!

Simple, elegant, lightweight, free, bug-free. What else to ask for?

Support for the iTunNORM Tag would be nice. Also drag'n'drop directly form iTunes would be cool. So I could drop all tracks from an iTunes smart playlist onto Taply and quit iTunes to save resources while listening to music in background. But then hiding the window and media key support is needed.

Cog is great but stopped working on me.

Tried Vox, Taply and Play for substitute.

Vox and Taply had very high CPU usage in background when not running.

In the case of Taply, 5.4% on a Macbook Pro 2.5GHz. Just too much background resources.

Play is a bit ugly but uses .1% CPU in the background.

Since I "upgraded" to the latest version of quicktime, Taply won't play files encoded with the Apple Lossless Codec. Can this be fixed?

Very useful tool to have around. Thanks to the developer for making it available at this very low price.

Now Apple has downgraded playing audio files within the Finder - The crimes of no time-line scrubber and no M3U both of which were very useful and much missed - make this application even more useful.

Thanks !

Very good for listening without having to open iTunes and adding the song to your playlist. I just wish it had a "preferences" so that you could choose to let it opened all time or turn off the "be on top".

Great app ;)

ok... this is great. slick and clean and lovely. it does what it should in a a really unique way. the only things that would make this great app perfect would be to add a shuffle option.

other then that, lovely program. simple and elegant and innovative.

Cool. Reminds me of SoundApp (MacOS 9) :-)

SoundApp had a very cool feature: "virtual" playlists: when you double-clicked a sound file in the Finder, SoudApp would begin playing it, of course... and then when you double-clicked other sound files in sequence in the Finder, SoundApp would add them to a virtual queue. After the first song finished playing, the next double-clicked song would begin, and so on... One could even navigate back and forth within this temporary "queue-playlist", using the keyboard arrow-keys. I liked that.

A contender for SoundApp and Taply? DropSound: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16112

Gonna try them now (Taply and DS).

Thanks. Works great.
Still Missing 4 "the perfect little player":
1. volume slider
2. folder-support

Hey, here are the cool features "I" like2have:
- remember playlist/song/position...
- fade-in, fade-out ...
